a lot of it is commission sale. The people who own them obviously know how much the guitar is worth so want a good return on it. The shop just whack a huge sellers fee on top i guess. They can probably get away with it being on kings road with all the rich business men looking to invest their money in old guitars instead of putting it in the bank. Clarky-that 63 refin P is about £2.5 k over priced! for just over £3k you could get headofires 1961 refin P off the for sale thread in here!
Hey Wes, I was going to check out their best price as I realise its vastly over-priced. If I was born in 61 instead of 63, headofire would have had a PM a long time ago!
I contacted them recently about buying a 64 burgundy mist P bass from them. I was genuinly interested and sent an email. no reply...i made a phone call...they said they'd get back to me....no reply...I called them again and they just couldn't be assed to talk to me... all I wanted was they're best price. I was ready to take the very large loan the bank had offered me and go down there if it would of come out at the right price. but after that I shall not bother!
I emailed them about their (hugely over-priced) 63P oly white refin two days ago and they didn't reply. I rang this morning and they clearly hadn't checked their emails. The guy was perfectly friendly but didn't really have much knowledge of what they had in stock that fitted my requirements
Then it's nice to see you developing your business interests in Chinese manufactured instruments.
I hear the Chinese make very good genuine Fender and Gibson guitars and basses
Umm...for a few weeks I had a Brandoni fretted Jbass neck on that bass. Worked well, but felt soooo wrong! I won't mention the EMG, Schaller or badass stuff either. And sorry about the cavity in the back...it was about 1989 and it just didn't seem to matter at the time.
Well the pickups and badass are gone, the latter replaced by a genuine period replacement (the pickups were replaced by Shaggy and are SD vintage P and Fralin J I think). I really don't care as its a true player's bass and drips with character. S'why if I have to make the choice between this and Tony Franklin as my fretless, the latter loses out, no contest even though its a gorgeous bass in its own right (I only ended up with the TF as Beedster had one of the 'moments' he referred to above just as we were about to do the deal a couple of months back!!!!)
Been in the hands of a few BC-er's this one (in fretless guise); originally Bassbod's for years and years, then Walbassist's, then mine, then Beedsters. A lovely, lightweight, resonant bass. I wasn't expecting to like it with the Jazz neck, but have to say it looks absolutely superb - the rosewood just right, and the neck binding continues into the pickguard edging in an aesthetically really pleasing way. Bet it plays well too. Nice one! (nostalgic sniff! )
Thanks Greg. Re: aesthetics, if only there was a way to accelerate the aging process for the headstock (which is too pale by comparison) it would look perfect. Don't suppose I can pour coffee on it Incidentally it does play wonderfully well - it has Pyramid flats on and has very low action. Bassbod: should I finally get hold of the 63P I have long coveted, I will probably put this back to fretless and sell the Tony Franklin.
I've seen one in the flesh and was disappointed. It wasn't great. Looked very, err, cost-effective. P
Good to know. One less thing to GAS over!
That's handsome Clarky, are you planning to gig it?
I would definitely gig it as first choice but my current band only requires double bass. I need to see if I can find a second, electric gig
So what happens to the RI body that the neck came off?
I bought the neck off eBay from that US parts seller that splits up current Fenders and sells them piecemeal. Not cheap, with import tax, but was still cheaper than assembling something similar from Allparts or Warmoth

I recently bought Beedster's '71 fretless but, having a Tony Franklin fretless already, thought it would be great to to pair the '71 with it as a fretted bass. Inspired by the new Fender 2011 Custom Shop P/J hybrid I have put on a Fender 70s RI block/bound J neck plus an original 1971 Fender bridge (courtesy of SiBob). Would be preferable if the headstock were aged (and had an early 70s Precision logo) but can't have everything. Heres the rather pricey (at £2.5k) Fender CS inspiration: And here's my one:

I recently bought a bass with both fretless and fretted necks (see Gear Porn and look for '71 Fender P/J for what became of it). The fretted neck was taken from an American Vintage 1962 Jazz Reissue (inc tuners) and appears to be dated Sep 2001 on the sticker on the back of the heel. Aged nicely and only missing the little metal cup on the rear of the headstock that allows you to hang these up. £200 plus postage please.

Alleva-Coppolo LG4 in 3TS for sale (immaculate condition)
It's a beautiful bass...keep it
I might well do that Gareth. It is fabulous and it was only the rather emotional desire for a YOB Precision that motivated me to put it up FS. I will find another way to pay for the 63 Precision should a nice example come my way. -

Caps Lock Key *available again*
Clarky replied to wateroftyne's topic in Accessories & Other Musically Related Items For Sale
I will take your caps lock kind sir. I am the son of the former justice minister of a small African Republic which must remain nameless. My father and family were all killed by a trained rhinoceros in the pay of the cruel dictator of our Republic. With my father's last words he gave me the details of a bank account into which he had deposited ONE MILLION DOLLARS with instructions that I should only share this money with a person of the highest caps lock. I will send you half of the ONE MILLION DOLLARS if you send me the caps lock key to Post Box 5457, Nigeria together with your bank account number, sort code and PIN number. I thank you kind sir for answering my prayers and the last wishes of my dying father.
Good sir, please read my message. ONE MILLION POUNDS awaits. Do not let the Dictator and his rhino emerge with victory. -
Si just sold me a vintage Fender bridge. As you would expect from this throughly decent fellow, it came swiftly and packed really well and I am chuffed with the item itself. Nice one Si and I am happy to add to your growing feedback thread - just four more pages and you will catch up with me

Don't give up Alasdair, I can guarantee I am more cr@p at bass than you are but just got lucky with my band. Right place, right time. It will surely happen to you too PS, from my own experience I know you are not a social misfit!

Maybe join a Norwegian black metal band instead, Nige? I've already found a singer for you
