Crinson Telebass

Crinson are a Northern outfit which normally specialises in carefully relic'd Strats and Teles. AFAIK this is the only bass they've ever done, but see Post #8 for further information that has come to me since I listed it.

Despite having "Crinson" clearly emblazoned on the headstock, more than one bass player has thought this was a genuine 1951 Fender. This reflects either how good this bass is, or how bad NHS glasses are.

The tone is excellent, more flexible and less subterranean than the original, and the pickup is clearly pretty hot - this is a very punchy, passive bass.

Unusually, I have kept the ashtrays on for this bass. I find it feels better, and the swept-back style of the pickup cover actually works really well as a thumbrest (unlike the 1957 model). It's currently strung with roundwounds, which may not be period correct but certainly sounds really good and besides, I have three other Precisions strung with flatwounds ...

Condition is excellent, in so far as that actually means anything when describing a relic'd instrument. All the marks on this bass are clearly those that Crinson intended to be there, no nasty dents or scratches. Everything works exactly as the maker intended, no issues whatsoever.

Weighs (with strap) just over 8.5lbs.

PLEASE READ THIS BIT!

I'm having my first serious GAS attack in ages, and I need to raise somewhere north of £2000 in the next week or two. The building site that is Chez Happy, and the project manager that is Mrs. Happy, both mean that the funding is only going to come from selling some basses.

But which ones?

The answer seems to be ... most of them. So I'm listing most of my basses for sale, and if/when I raise enough cash to satisfy my GAS then I'll withdraw what remains.

DESCRIPTIONS

I don't do the whole describe-the-neck thing, and tell you what it feels like or how "fast" it is (does that help when you play a song by J.J. Cale?).

I don't tell you how low my action is. I don't slap or tap, so there's no point asking me. All my basses are set up for reasonably robust finger-style playing. If you want to know the sort of music I choose to play, check out the Band link in my sig.

If my description didn't mention a problem, then there isn't one (IMHO).

All that said, obviously you should always try before you buy if at all possible. If you can't do that yourself, then I'm perfectly happy for you to ask a knowledgeable friend to come round and check a bass out on your behalf.

OFFERS

All the basses I'm listing are excellent in their own way, or I wouldn't own them. None are clunkers that I'm desperate to get rid of.

BUT there's not a lot of cash out there and (given that I am not looking for trades at all) I am prepared to entertain offers ... in fact some offers can be quite entertaining. :)

DELIVERY

Each bass will be supplied with a hard case or a gig bag, as appropriate. Each bass can be tested in and/or collected from London, either in Chiswick W4 or the West End WC1.

I can post if I really have to, but I greatly prefer to do business face to face. If I'm posting, then I use my firm's courier - they are very reliable but they are NOT cheap.

No, I will not queue up at the Post Office with a bass. No, I will not use DelBoy's ultra-cheap delivery service. No, I will not wait in at home all day in case your chosen courier decides to put in an appearance. Bin there, dun that. :)

Sorry mate, I have no idea what you mean.
From eubassix' original FS thread, if this helps slightly: Nigel Crinson handmade '51 Precision - I think this is the only bass that he's done to date. His guitars have attracted a lot of interest from Fender (!) so I don't think any are currently being built (pending). Local luthier (acoustic violins originally) whose instruments have been getting a lot of positive press. The pickup is a unique (I'm told) BullDog 51-P (the only bass pickup they've done?). There are bridge and pickup covers with the bass (51P type).
that looks lovely! I'm intrigued as to why he uses those cheap small back machine heads though!
My thoughts too :) & they're shorter, making the 'ears' too close to the woodwork - looks wrong IMO :)

Maybe to save weight? Stop head dive, help balance? Not a problem on my '51 Ri.

Once again proving what an astonishing resource Basschat is, I've received a PM from the guy who originally commissioned this bass.

Rather than extract bits from it, I hope he won't mind me simply repeating it here:

Hi, I thought I would fill in any gaps regarding this bass. Nigel Crinson built this bass for me a few years ago and I was the original owner.

The body was made by Nigel and the neck is Fender All Parts. Nigel then reliced the guitar including all the hardware.

The pickup was specially made by Bulldog Pickups for this bass, the pickup is unique and it is unlikely they will put it into production.

If I hadn't just purchased (ironically from Nigel) and 1969 P Bass I would certainly be buying the bass.

One point that I picked up is that I was wrong about Crinson making the entire bass - clearly the neck was not made by him, though I doubt that All Parts would still recognise it as one of theirs.

I originally priced this bass as a complete custom job, which is what I thought it was. Under the circumstances, I've decided to reduce the price to reflect new information.
