1. Here he is in his later years, still same unorthodox technique http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zm-veVCBplc
2.
bet he didn't eat his heart out over pickups, amps & strings
Well, if BassChat had been around in the 1930s/40s it might have been different .....

I don't have you down as a natural wood type, Wayne (barring the 75RI Jazz that you've always said you lusted after). Is this getting the WPD re-fin treatment? I've not seen a surf green Warwick yet ....
4. I am an occasional fan of a bit of gipsy jazz and was interested to watch some old YT clips of Louis Vola, Django Reinhardt's bass player and the main man on DB in the genre. If you watch the clips he plucks way up the neck (around the neck join) with an unusual clawing/slapping motion and his left arm position is also about as unorthodox compared with the 'classical' position. Just goes to show its the music that counts, not the technique! Well it made me feel better any way
5. While I love the looks of this, I tried a quick one-hand lift at the Orange stand at LBS and it seems quite heavy for a compact neo-equipped combo (my guess is 60+ pounds). I'm not so sure going with a 2x12 was the right move. I would have though 2x10 would appeal to more and would have been appreciably lighter .. and cheaper (they retail at £848 - see link below). I am assuming it sounds just like a Terror Bass head with no extra bells and whistles given the control layout http://www.soundslive.co.uk/product~name~Orange-TB500C-Terror-Bass-Combo~ID~15121.asp
6. Just bought Chris' Takamine B10 - beautiful instrument and chris as ever was a joy to deal with. This in fact marks my 250th trade with Beedster* * not really but it feels like it!
7. On its way to BC'er Woodo (aka Arttu) in Sweden
8. Thanks Chris. I just popped round to Jack's and got my old one back. Now which end do you hold?
9. Why not make an offer for one fixing, just for a laugh. OK, I know life's too short!
10. Thanks Keith, the bass in the band in question is a lot more demanding than Rattlin Bone (faster, busier) so we will see. Its a really good band though so fingers crossed
11.
The only box I have that would take that is probably far larger than you'd want to use.
But if it could be butchered and taped together it could be just the ticket If you are happy to offload it, I'll take it mate
12.
I'm here, but you might want avoid 4:00 pm - 5:45 pm! How big is the Acme?
Its a 2x10 with dimensions 23"H x 15.75"W x 16.5"D, which in cm is around 57.5 x 38 x 41
13.
French or German pattern? Makes a difference how you hold the bow and the bass. If you stand with the bass sideways on you probably need a French. If you sit or stand behind the bass you might like the German style.
Thanks Keith, I didn't realise that Jack would happily hand back my old (basically unused) bow. I have an audition coming up and the intro to a couple of songs requires long arco strokes on the E and A strings. I stand sideways on so I guess that makes it French
14. That v kind Jack, deal! I am driving to Ealing this afternoon - are you around? BTW, you don't happen to have a large box for shipping a cab as well - long shot - a guy want s me to ship my Acme cab but I cannot find a box of the right size
15. I would drop Beedster a PM
16. I am going to have a go at arco but am without a bow. The ones on the web seem to be generally ultra-cheap or eye-wateringly expensive. Does anyone have an OK bow in good shape, preferably with quiver and rosin (as I'm too lazy to source everything separately!) Up to £100 budget (obviously the cheaper the better, as long as OK quality). Can do paypal or bank transfer
17. Thats a beauty. Rarely ever see these come up for sale and seems like a really good price too. Good luck with the sale
18. I voted "I don't really practice much, but I'm in a band that plays live". Two qualifications, I noodle a hell of a lot (maybe an hour a day), rather than practice (I find just holding a bass and farting around on it therapeutic). And I just quit my band!
19. My main gripe actually is that the black version just looks a bit crap. That is all
20. I popped along for an hour (I live nearby, Hammersmith way) and the volume wasn't as bad as last year but still intrusive enough to mean you couldn't really have a conversation without craning your neck and saying pardon every so often. I bumped into Dood, Wes (wesfinn), Mark from BassDirect, Barrie (Molan) and Phil (born2bmild) at Bassgear, Alan (skelf) of ACG guitars. TBH, nothing particularly floated my boat purchase-wise, although there were some v nice instruments and rigs there (ACG have some beautiful builds in particular).
21. And I've seen Jon's - its tons nicer!
22. I thinks the price issue relates to two things: (1) the absolute level is up in hand-built luthier territory (which is an issue with all CS Fenders) and (2) could it be a more basic plank? There is nothing about that bass that screams expensive parts/build, albeit I bet it sounds great ... just probably no better than a Squier VM 50s Precision
23. There can't be that many ZZ Top tribute bands to sell this to. I don't see who else would pay that price
24. Sorry but you have to state a price too (forum rules). Good luck, it looks a beauty Edit: aha, I see a price on your online album of £1750 but it would be a good idea to post it in the OP or the title
