On the grounds that the Stevie Wonder clip I posted above is a bit fizzy/scratchy sounding (mine sounds warmer in real life) here's another clip of a Rob Allen which gives a more representative impression of what a Rob Allen sounds like (this is the short-scale Mouse model but they are very similar) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_iWt-0qTydE

Thank you Silvia for coming along - and of course Sean, Wayne and Alastair! Nice photo

Well it has one tone only and thats a woody, piezo tone. So it sounds 'quite' like a double bass but not exactly. Its not, for example, nasal or middy. Its more rich and rounded... but with a piezo you get out of it what you put in, so your playing style can change the attack and decay of each note. Think of it as a piezo fretless and you will get the best idea of what it sounds like.

I recently acquired this gorgeous bass from German BC'er Markus (BC username Bender) but I have decided I prefer my Takamine B10 as a double bass emulator (and the band really likes the gypsy jazz vibe of the B10 too). I can't really afford to have two DB emulators so I am moving this on. The bass in question is incredibly light (6.5 pounds) and has a very slim, fast neck and a lovely piezo-driven DB-esque tone and the specs, pinched from Markus' FS thread (http://basschat.co.u...l__rob%20allen; has a ton of pics), are as follows: alder body (tort binding) with flamed walnut top (200$ upgrade) maple neck / lined ebony fretboard with side dots matching bound headstock (200$ upgrade) Labella black tape wound strings Protec Contego case There are a few tiny nicks and scrapes (all pictured in Markus' thread) but nothing in any way significant and it could pass for new from a few feet away. I paid Markus' asking price of £1500 plus post and would be looking to recoup this. For an unbiased third party opinion of this, you could always ask BC'er chris_b who came to try it out this morning (he is after a 5-string MB-2)

Slightly annoying buzz when I hit open 'A' string
Get a set of these
The nut slot is too deep for the string so I assume you mean taking down the fingerboard slightly? Hmm, sounds like serious screw-up potential for a handyman numpty like me!!!! -
Yeah I have my pass for tonght ! If you see a confused looking midde aged man in a crumpled Rush Tshirt that'll be me
watching a confused middle aged man with a silly grey mullet trying to figure out which end of a double bass you play
If you can get hold of a bit of thin leather, it should last longer than the card. Glad it's sorted!
Thanks Sarah, I will try to do so. Now which pair of Mrs C's shoes shall I cut up? -
Slightly annoying buzz when I hit open 'A' string

Looks like change to thick gut-alike Silver Slaps caused the problem. As these are so thick compared to the Helicores which were on it before, I assume the amplitude of the vibration was bigger than the gap between string and board, near the nut. So my choices are to swap strings, stick with a shim in the A slot in the nut, or have the nut or board professionally worked on. As I like Silver Slaps and don't want to send the bass away again for work to be done, looks like its the shim! -
try a bit of thin card under the string at the nut
Bingo! You are the man Keith. This sorts the buzz. As Clouseau would say, ze problem is sol-ved -
Just picked up a combo off Jamie. Very straightforward deal. Nice one!

<p style="margin-left: 40px">The strings are Silver Slaps - my only other set is Kolstein Heritage steels which are utterly different in character. Would swapping the A over tell me much, as their vibration characteristics are likely to be very different?</p> -

So far I've checked the headstock (tuners solid, nut good), shunted the bridge 1mm sideways and back and tweaked the bridge feet, checked the Full Circle p/u wires and jack barrel, checked the bridge after-length (which is damped anyway with a piece of rubber tubing) and shifted the endpin into a different position and tightened very hard ... and you guessed it, yes, the rattle is still there -
So - let's get this right: You left the band, and he replaced you with Will Lee? That's quite a compliment.
That is one interpretation ... unfortunately not the correct one! No flippin' way I could play that bass line for starters

Spotted: Percy Jones playing an Ibanez Groovline
Clarky replied to Spoombung's topic in Bass Guitars
It's like Percy has just got progressively less nice sounding fretless basses each time he moves on. Reminds me of a thread to that effect I posted a few months back when I put forward my view that his nicest, woodiest tone was actually with his fretless Precision back in ealy Brand X days, followed by his Wal in later Brand X days http://basschat.co.uk/topic/163053-percy-jones-fretless-tone/page__p__1525888__hl__percy%20jones__fromsearch__1#entry1525888 -
The singer from my previous band, Rattlin Bone, Wily Bo Walker has just released a new single. Its rather different from our Tom Waits-voodoo vibe output as Rattlin Bone. Bo has managed to blag some uber-musicians to play on it, including Will Lee on bass! This being BassChat I thought some of you would be interested in hearing Will Lee going through his paces - very tight, funky playing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0uOa40p0Os

[sup]Thanks Sarah, I didn't get the chance to take a look at the bass last night (small matter of football) but will be doing so tonight[/sup]
