1990s (?) G-K 200MB combo - now with gigbag! - ON HOLD
Clarky replied to Clarky's topic in Amps and Cabs For Sale
Update: I thought I would stick with this and bought the matching Rockbag off Thomann for transporting it http://www.thomann.de/gb/rockbag_rb23002.htm (£38 plus post). However, having tried it at rehearsal, I still prefer the absolutely transparent sound of my Acoustic Image Ten2 combo and so I am re-posting this for sale. I will do the combo plus Rockbag for £250 collected in London -
Nice duo, covering Stingray and Jazz sounds

Adding to what Bob said, I put a Kent Armstrong mag p/u on my Kolstein so that I have the choice between piezo (a Planet Wing) or mag, depending on the venue/gig. The KA actually sounds quite woody and authentically double bass-y, certain it has more of a DB vibe than a fretless vibe.
No.
Tough Monckyman, here's some more! Vicente Amigo again. This guy is (to use Mrs C's vernacular) bazzing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8IxZhxgnvw
And when it finally fizzled to an end, there was a 2 hour drive home in the rain to look forward to.
Love it. I am curiously reminded of this fabulous scene from Father Ted http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnZDI1slxMI

Was pointed to this by our guitarist. Its just beautiful. 'Nothin' by Townes Van Zandt, a deceased Texas folk musician. Has a real vibe of the Johnny Cash version of 'Hurt' but predates it by many years http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZcH2OOMV4A

If I am to offer a suggestion of a bass player whose style and tone I can't abide (and leaving aside Clutterbuckery as its just showing off at music shows) it would have to be Fieldy of Korn. I genuinely enjoy all sorts of bass playing from straight-ahead pumping 16th note punk (like DeeDee Ramone), to rock, to Motown, to walking jazz lines to Bernard Edwards-style funkiness but that awful cacophony of detuned slapping funk-rock is unlistenable to me Edit: he is of course richer and more famous than most of us on BC will ever be so my taste proves nothing!

Surprised I haven't been nominated yet. I'm enthusiastic but sh*t!

Download festival - appalling logistics/transport. A rant
Poor toilets and delays getting in and out at a Festival...NSS?
The point of my OP was that the organisation of Download was (in my eyes) dramatically worse than the Reading and Sonisphere festivals I attended last year. Your 'NSS' comment was uncalled for but, whatever, its the internet -
I've used Lights which are nice but still slightly more tense than my favourite non-steels (Innovation Silver Slaps). I am guessing the Ultralights would be the easiest to play (especially as a relaive newbie) but I have no direct experience - maybe someone else can chip in here? The alternative is to pick up a cheap piezo pickup (from BC DB forum or eBay) and then you have the choice of any string

Looks like a Krivo mag p/u to me (a small US manufacturer who sells on eBay, amongs others if you google). Perfectly decent mag p/u For strings that are compatible (ie, have steel core) and low tension, the ones I would go for are either the low tension Presto Nylonwound (which feel like gut) http://www.kontrabass-atelier.de/saiten_e.html#nw or all-steel Kolstein heritage http://www.gollihurmusic.com/product_details.cfm?ProdID=2304
I look forward to the A/B result.
I just spent 15 mins with both this bass and my Takamine B10 and they are both fab! My thoughts are as follows: - The Rob Allen only has one tone (it has a single volume knob) but its a lovely piezo-driven warm fretless sound and the bass seems ridiculously light. The neck is jazz-like in dimensions and is very fast and slick. - By contrast, the Takamine has a broader range of tones (albeit from its hard-to-fathom preamp with 20 presets) and feels more like a double bass with its heavily radius'd ultra-chunky neck and bulk. Its not as fast as the Rob Allen and is harder physically to play. But then again the B10 has to be the best looking acoustic bass ever made. - Neither sounds exactly like a double bass but they both come close enough to use them in place of a DB when the latter is impractical. Hmmm, I may end up keeping both as I can see pros for each!!! And I'm certainly in no rush to make a choice

I just took delivery of a beautiful Rob Allen MB2 fretless bass from Markus. The bass was superbly packed to withstand whatever any courier could possibly throw at it (it was coming from Germany) and dealing with Markus was an absolute pleasure from the start. Highly recommended
come on guys! i can honestly say that every english festival ive been to ive had an awesome time! there is nothing like camping out the whole weekend! be it rain or shine! you cant help the rain! at reading a few years back it was so hot that the ground was so hard you couldnt get pegs in and there where people complaining! yeh it expensive but how much would seeing all of those bands cost you? and Tenacious D are awesome live! if you dnt like them thats different but i bet there was a whole crowd singing along no? andy
You make some reasonable points (although for me and my two boys it cost close to £500 so it was a pricey way of seeing Prodigy and Metallica; we missed the the only other band I really wanted to see, Opeth, due to aforementioned traffic jam on Friday) But you are missing one thing here. This is an internet forum and this is one of the 99% of meaningless posts written by someone who just fancied a rant and should have been doing something more constructive than sitting at a computer -
FS: Warwick Thumb NT 5 fretless (sold pending usual)
Clarky replied to Mrbigstuff's topic in Basses For Sale
If you PM me your mail address I have a couple of emails from Ollie with pics on (I was thinking about buying this bass but in the end decided against it just because I decided to stick with 4 strings for easy transitioning between upright and fretless). Its a beauty and I have no connection with Ollie before you ask!!!! -
Oops turns out this wasn't necessarily the final version (hence why its still password protected) and I shouldn't have posted it publicly. Ermn, well I'm glad those of you have seen it enjoyed it but I had better remove the link and password from the OP
