1. colour (sea foam green) not on your list but I would go for:
2. I sent back a new SG Faded Cherry bass a few months back as the frets were rough and very sharp at the edges (to the extent it hurt to slide up the neck) and as the rosewood board had obviously been split and epoxied by the nut to 'make good'. It was worse than the finish on one of those ultra-cheapo mass-market 'learner' basses
3. OK just heard from my regular trading partner (!) Beedster. Fraid it is indeed on its way to Beedster Towers
4. Sorry I've not tried the Schaller but they don't have the highest reputation (even if they are stalwarts of the scene for decades). The Krivo is supposedly the best (which is why I got it!) along with the harder-to-find Biesele and Pierre Josephs String Charger pickups. Here in the UK, a lot of people like the Kent Armstrong mag pickup Should Beedster change his mind, you will be first to know!
5. Beedster texted me to say he wanted it, sorry Pete. If he changes his mind will let you know
6. WelI I have only had the strings on my bass a few days and have not gigged them yet so its a bit early. However first impressions are they feel quite similar to Silver Slaps but narrower gauge. Very low tension. There is a distinct rich gut sound to the sound, despite the tynex wrapping but probably more finger noise than plain guts (which I expect to reduce as they break in). There is a clear LaFaro/Haden sound to them which is exactly what I was after and the low/no maintenance is a plus vs normal guts. They are still stretching but not ridiculously so - each time I tune up they are maybe half a tone out. I have an Oliv G in my string drawer and that sounds slightly richer I would say and if you do arco (I don't) I suspect it would be infinitely preferable to a Goldentone G which looks like it would be a pig to bow. Having down some more research, Pirastro also make a tynex wrapped gut (in the Pizzicato set) which you can buy individual strings from at the bassico website, but they are pricey
7. Hey Jamie, many congrats on the teacher training course. For those reading, I have Jamie's old CMD121P combo and he's a top seller, even if he is a Chelsea fan
8. Looks like my old white 70ri CIJ Precision 'Sid' on the back right of the cover photo
9. From a Goldentone set (I only wanted the tynex-wrapped gut D and G from this set, which are like the famed Golden Spirals played by LaFaro, Haden etc*). http://www.labella.c...00l-goldentone/ The E and A are chrome steel rapped around a rope core and - based on the A (which I put on my bass for about one minute; I haven't even unwrapped the E) - a bit like less growly Spirocores, and sort of light/medium tension. I have paired the D/G with dark-sounding Evah Pirazzi Weich E/A and they match really well, which is why I am moving on these surplus-to-requirement strings Bargain price £30 posted for the pair PS, For the avoidance of doubt, the E is unused and the A was just on my bass momentarily and so has the tiniest amount of silk 'scuffing' * discussion thread here about Goldentones and Golden Spirals, in case interested http://www.talkbass....d-label.311553/
10. Looks like this is heading off to one of the usual suspects
11. As most of BC membership is in the UK it might be an idea to find out how much shipping to the UK would be and post it here great cabs by the way
12.
Why am I thinking about Gene Pitney now?
I was thinking about Nigella but whatever floats your boat Jack
13.
P.S. Clarky, your phone keeps ringing me from your pocket
Ooops apologies, I have just got a touch sensitive Blackberry from work and I keep forgetting to lock it If its any consolation, it was ringing you because I was bending over the packing box, slapping in loads of bubble wrap and surrounding it in a ton of brown tape!
14.
MB1. Hey Clarky How did the Trial go?... The one with the bass that is?
Hi Martin, it hasn't yet. I am sending the bass to BCer The Badderer to arrive next week so a decision will be made by the end of next week. Cheers!
15. Looks great Mark. if I can make one tiny suggestion? A real tort plate from spitfire-whatever-his-name-is (check out the "wheer has all the decenttort gone" thread) would make your bass complete and IMHO indistinguishable from a real McCoy. Looks great as it is, but I think that would cap it off See here: http://basschat.co.u...ost__p__2460800
16.
Clarky, you ain't not not told us two IMHO very important bits yet: - Do you play on the same spot of the length of the strings with those different basses? I'd guess this is hardly likely, and it may influence how the timbre develops. I'd suppose different strings "like" different positions of the playing hand - How do you perceive the sound? Does this influence your valuation?
In answer to your questions, I tried shifting my right hand position on the Jazz (which, as someone pointed out earlier, one tends to play closer to the bridge than on a Precision) and it made no difference. The sound (obviously the two basses differ) doesn't influence my question, its about the comfort and feel of playing on the hands. Given family/neighbours etc I often practice unamplified and it was in this context I posted my OP. I do want to try swapping the old La Bellas on to my Jazz but I am slightly put off by the fact that I will have to alter the truss rod again - I have already tweaked it several times) and I don't want to get closer to stripping the screw holes for the neck (remember its a 62 reissue so there is no convenient truss rod adjuster visible and the neck has to be taken off, at least partialy to adjust)
17. Sold pending a trial run next week
18.
more excursion and flap
and with those words Discreet suddenly returned
19. I should add, skank you may be on to something there. Ever since I got my Jazz I have suffered from stomach pains at night, and resultant insomnia. Its clearly the atrabilious humours. Now they don't include that in arguments about which bass is best for metal
20. I'm glad we got that sorted then. Back to Flea vs Mark King I suggest. Thank you citizens
21. I have to be honest Owen and say thats a bit far for me. Would be about 5-6 hours driving time in a day. So that would rule me out. Mind you, I am pants at double bass so the average quality of attendees would rise!
22.
it's the bbot it is evil and contains gremlins remove it your problems will be solved hope this helps
Ze prob-lem is sol-ved
23.
I guess the different woods used in the JV may also make a difference. Is it basswood? Maybe that affects the tone more with these strings?
Well the P and J are both early 1980s Squier JV reissues patterned off the 1962 originals and thus I assume each has an alder body. They both have a rosewood board and maple neck. So as far as I can tell, the body woods wouldn't really make much/any difference
24. Good points. I may swap the old La Bella strings on to my Jazz as an experiment to see if there's as much difference
