1. Man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. Just from my experience, I went 20 years without playing bass properly (arguably I still can't!) through work/kids etc but always had one stowed under the bed for when I fancied picking out a nice bass line or two. My advice would be to keep one bass secreted away just in case .... Best of luck whatever you choose to do
2. I have removed the Fishman Full Circle from my 3/4 bass as I want to try a different pickup (the new Gage realist) and am hence moving it on. In full working condition but one small drawback - I have mislaid the other 1/4" aluminium adjuster wheel (as in the one without the piezo unit). These can be bought in pairs from luthier Martyn Bailey for c£25 http://www.mjbl.co.u...usters-for-sale and with a bit of googling maybe a cheaper individual adjuster wheel would come up? Given this slight extra compliction I will sell (including post) at the decent price of £85 posted - bear in mind, these are roughly £200 new including post at Thomann http://www.thomann.d...full_circle.htm Technical stuff: http://www.fishman.c...t-bass-pickup-1
3. During the course of having my bass repaired by my luthier last week, he put on a brand new set of the recently-released white nylon La Bella 7710 strings, which were co-designed by Ron Carter. In a fit of enthusiasm I decided to keep them on the bass and bought them from him for a more-than-fair £80 (they are not available yet in Europe, as far as I can see, but retail at $148 in the US - which would mean an imported cost of c£120-odd) http://www.gollihurm...SS_STRINGS.html. While they have a wonderful soft feel under the fingers, having had them on my bass a few days I have decided they are slightly too bright for me (I prefer 'old school' 1950s tone) and have gone back to my old faithfuls (Velvet Blues). Thus, virtually unused and not-yet-available in UK and I will pass on at the same great price - £80 including post La Bella product page: http://www.labella.com/products/7710t/
4.
I'm a complete newbie who recently acquired a Stagg EUB, and I was wondering if you thought the gut-a-like would product interesting results on a piezo EUB. I am playing mainly in an acoustic project, currently doing covers of pop and blues songs - no bowing or upper range soloing
ho there, I don't think these would suit a Stagg tbh. These are mainly designed for slapping and are über chunky. I would drop a pm to stingray Pete to ask about best strings for s Stagg as I think it's scale length doesn't work with some strings
5. The seller hasn't been on BC since 3rd September, over a month. Just sayin'
6. Velvet Blues sold, Gut-a-likes still available
7. Last one tomorrow (Saturday)! If you wanted to see All The Queens Ravens and live in London, best come along as there won't be a gig with a drummer for at least a year and the band may go 'on ice' between times
8. here's a stock pic which gives some idea of the fatness of Gut-a-like Deluxe strings
9. Honest answer is no. In the incredibly short time before my bridge collapsed (causing bridge foot to fly into my eye, rupturing blood vessel!) my impression is that they were like better quality Cordes Lamberts rather than guts. Rabbie on basschat has used these and prefers them to Lamberts although he says neither are exactly like guts
10. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGyrGTuMhzo&list=UUh3BbC85YARDmHksD4nnmNA re maple vs rosewood, Guitarbank's Jazz bass comparison video reveals the difference again - I am guessing its inherent in the different wood types
11. Gut-a-like deluxe strings After my recent gout-in-left-hand scare I thought I would try out some Gut-a-likes for low tension, relatively loud acoustic volume work in my bluegrass side project. As I was tweaking the A string after installing, my DB bridge collapsed (doh!) so I took them off again. However, in the brief period in which I tried them I immediately decided I couldn't cope with the big diameter of the E and A strings (E is copperwound, A is more like the D and G but very thick, like an earthworm!) I paid £140 from Thomann for them http://www.thomann.d...ass_strings.htm These have less than an hour of play on the D/G and minutes only on the E/A £100 posted, absolute barg if you are slapper or like earthy/roots type DB [s]Velvet Blues SOLD I like these strings a lot but have two sets and only need one. This set came in a trade for some other strings and is in good condition but the bright copper has tarnished to dark brown. This can easily be restored with a wet rag and toothpaste (Velvet's advice!) so they are shiney looking, if that matters to you (the tone doesn't change). They are £140 at Thomann including post, will sell for £75 posted[/s]
12. Thanks Jake! I have the cherry concentrate and very tasty it is too After a short dose of naproxen the pain disappeared. I also had x-rays/MRI done and there is some damage from my fall of a few years ago (where I broke my left hand in several places) which may have exacerbated the problem. Its all "back to normal" now, at least in terms of being pain-free.
13. FYI, there is a world of difference between Innovation Silver Slaps and nylon weedwacker-type strings like you have. Silver Slaps have decent volume and are altogether higher quality than lifeless/quiet weedwacker strings which are rubbish IMHO
14. First of the two gigs tonight!
15. As Legion says, Innovation will see you right. Silver Slaps are fat nylon wound strings that do a pass-able (but not exact) impersonation of gut strings (which are what all bluegrassers used to use back in the day) and they are very low tension, hence easy on hands and slappable if you want to play pizz and slap. More modern bluegrassers frequently use 'darker' sounding steel strings like Evah Pirazzi Weichs, D'Adddario Zyex and Velvet strings, as these don't have the zingy brightness of say Thomastik Spirocore strings (the jazz standards) and instead have somethng of the thumpier, shorter decaying sound that is associated with guts, but without the tuning stability issues of real guts. The downside is these are a lot more expensive than Innovation strings unless you pick up a second-hand set on BassChat.
16. As I understand it they are similar in tension/sound to Spiro Mittels but with longer sustain and a bit more growl. Here's a thread on BC wth a couple of people's experiences of them: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/194162-gut-a-like-gut-strings-pirastro-the-jazzer/
17. OK will include post so its £300 all-in or Euro 390 posted for our continental brethren
18. Ryan bought my PJB combo. Top transaction, good comms, fast payment. All great
19. Like it, Skol and Nige!
20.
Actually I have the puma 500 but I'm not letting it go yet Pedals, preamps,iPad, kidney
Sorry I have preamps, pedals, IPad and (so far, functioning) kidneys
21. Hey dudi8, I am not really looking for trades as I have plenty of strings, pickups, a preamp and (too many!) basses. What were you thinking? You can always try me but I'm afraid its not very likely - but hey try me! Only things I would like but don't have (and quite fancy) are the new Realist Lifeline pickup and a Tecamp Puma 500 amp
22. I got this last month from the US. Brandon Essex makes the recently launched Troll microphone which has gained great plaudits on TalkBass, a number of users saying its better and more feedback-proof than the DPA4099 'gold standard' live mic http://trollmicrophone.com/ It needs a fethead filter to boost the sound and protect the ribbon mic from damage from phantom power http://www.studiospa...0?VBMST=fethead The Troll was $375 plus import taxes which came to about £275 in total, the fethead was £75 and the Planet Waves mic cable about a tenner. So my total outlay a few weeks ago was £360. Will sell the lot for £300 plus post. Why sell? Well it works well at home on my 3/4 DB but I really bought it to use with my down-sized Kolstein travel bass, which is my main gigging instrument, and it seems to be very much more feedback-prone with this boomy small bodied bass than my full DB. I haven't got time to fiddle about with balancing mic and piezo inputs live, would rather 'plug n play', so I am going to stick with my Underwood pickup on my Kolstein. So here's a chance to pick up a nearly-new, great condition Troll setup for those who want to try out a mic for their DB. Also saves you the hassle of importing from the US and a fair few pennies saved to boot. What you get from Troll and a video of the mic in action: https://www.youtube....h?v=nTEJ0vndNO0
