1. Thank you for the calming words. They picked the guy who was leaving as I got there for my try out, my guess is the decision was made before I played a note which annoys me a bit. I don't take greatly to failure (never have done) and this will have a knock on effect for a while, the gear is going under the stairs until I think what to do next. I'm having a nice decaf & a croissant to calm me down in the hope I get some sleep tonight/today
2. Quick update, just found out tonight I didn't get it. They haven't actually told me yet, but they've just announced the new member on Facebook. Nice. Anyone want to by a behringer rig & 2 sh*t basses?
3.
First rehearsal with the new guy last night, went well, nine songs that in all honesty were giggable, think this is going to work out
Just out of interest, how did you tell the unsuccessful applicants they hadn't got in?
4. I'm now cutting out the middleman and not auditioning for anyone who has a song/band I can't stand on the set list. Saves having to stand pulling faces looking pained. But then again, I don't gig alot either.
5. Happy birthday, I may as well give you may basses and amps, I'm not using them much at the mo ;-)
6. I have this very same one, never thought i would see another. Mine has the bog standard pickups though, not these fancy upgraded things.
7. I can't stand auditioning, I did one t'other week which seemed to go ok but have heard diddley.squat back as of yet. Pretty disheartening after i spent best part of two weeks learning some songs, it actually makes me want to sell everything & give up
8.
He then in the same spate of email exchanges said that he wouldn't do a particular Wham song as that would be a step too far fror him. I rest my case
I would rather play/learn all the wham back catalogue than most of my last setlist! I was also told its about "what the audience wants, not what we like" and in the same turn (when lots of rehearsals & not much money/gigs occurred) , "we aren't doing it for for the money are we, just cos we enjoy it" :-o I must have missed the point along the way :-p
9.
Life' s too short to play songs that one can't bare to listen too let alone learn and have to play.
So true, I said this to an ex band mate and kept getting told "well you can't please everyone can you!"
10.
Oh thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you. I was starting to think I was the only person in the world who hates them as much as I do.
+ 1 I forgot I also hate these, tho strangely I love the piss take of the stones in "Stella Street" that used to.be on tv.
11.
I sing the theme to True Blood - think it's called Bad Things. I'm bored to death with it but keep getting outvoted. I introduce it as 'who wants to hear a song off the telly?' so I've taken to following that up by singing the first bit of the Jim'll Fix it tune in the hope that the rest of the band will drop it on grounds of bad taste. Sadly they're as sick as me so we're still doing it. Rodders sings a ZZ Top album track too so he can toss himself off with the extended solo. It's pointless but he won't drop it even though Mart and myself are shameless about cocking it up on purpose every night.
My ex band did "Bad Things" and I'm now hating it, also "American Girl" by Tom Petty. Anything by Morrisey/the Smiths, stone roses or Oasis is enough to make me turn down a band now. Probably why I'm unemployed/unemployable. I also now hate "fell in love with a boy" by joss stone, dull dull tune.
12. I can safely say its not me , I agree its a bit of a mike reid look. Nice waistcoat.
13. Last night I played my heart out for a place in a tribute band, still not heard owt back so today is pretty much a down day I can't even bring myself to play tonight. Having the night off to recover.
14. That kid looked scarily like Mr driveshaft/hetty wainthrop/Hobbit himself, Dom monaghan!
15. Well.... been, done it & awaiting outcome. Felt really good tonight so fingers crossed. I will update you lot as soon as I hear.
16. yeah, I've learned my songs, just working on getting used to the backing vocals (which I've not done much of before :s) They've given me a fairly loose "learn any 5 songs from this list perfectly" rather than picking 5 for me or knowing all 16 songs vaguely. I have my five that I enjoy playing but several of the other songs are my favourites to. So when playing I keep accidentally doing some of the other songs to! All good advice has been taken on board, I will be pooping myself come Thursday though .
17. sh*te, hadn't realised I posted after ogling some basses! Yeah I think you're right, I should think about it like I'm trying them out!
18. Any audition tips would be greatly appreciated. I have one on Thursday night & literally have only done one before, which I found out afterwards I had only gotten the job by recommendation/association rather than actually being the best applicant! (Plus i was the only one who turned up!) All my other work has come through friends of the family who all knew I could play. So hence I am very nervous. Any advice other than anti anxiety pills?
19. How annoying, I love the look/sound of these but it will have to wait until I have actual gig cash coming in. lets hope there's still lots available later this year.
20. Forgot to say, sitting/perching on glass top coffee tables ain't advised either, although you can still play bass with a glass shard punctured buttock, lifting gear is painful!
