It seems to be growing in popularity, I know a few people who do it. My very brief association with it was in 2015. It wasn’t a real church though, it was a unit just outside of the city centre. Really not what I was expecting at all.

It was because I’m an atheist. It just didn’t feel right somehow......I was also slightly concerned that if there was anything to it, I might get struck by lightening 😁

There’s some amazing gospel musicians, Andrew Gouche for instance. He played with Chaka Khan for quite a while. When I first left uni I was advertising my bass playing services. A church phoned me and asked if I’d be interested in playing at their services. I went along and auditioned, the head guy there was the drummer for the band. I was asked to join, they were paying me £50 for two hours on a Sunday morning, which was pretty nice. I went along the first week, just to sit and watch; bearing in mind I’d only ever been to church twice before then in my life, a wedding and a funeral. I felt such a charlatan though, I didn’t go again.

Nice! He’s an absolutely fantastic player.

Depends who the member is I guess. Level 42 with just Mark King would work. Equally Pink Floyd with just David Gilmour.

According to the Standing in the shadows book, he was really well respected. They used to hire a standby bassist, but still booked him. If he wasn’t able to do the session himself, then the standby was there. He was still booked though, at least that’s what I read.

If you’d wanted like that, ie perfectly quantised, it might have been better to have worked a bit with a click prior to going to the studio. You’d probably have saved a bit of money. The thing is, you’re used to hearing perfectly execution on recordings. A lot of older records, even by big name artists, the timing is quite elastic.

I think I read somewhere that he was pressured by the producers he was working for into changing his strings. His ‘sound’, the old string, dull sound had fallen out of favour.

Completely different. As others are pointing out too, why criticise it, why even watch it? You know beforehand what the programme will be like. It’s the same every year. The opening post sets the scene for the thread.

It’s the same thing every year. It’s not the type of show to feature new music, people generally on NYE want to hear stuff they know. The artists featured are advertised well in advance too. Most of the dissenting posters are criticising the format, the show itself, and Jools Holland. The whole point of this thread it to criticise the show. My point is, why watch it in the first place? You know who’s on, what it’s about, what it’ll be like.

I was at ICMP on their BMus with his nephew, who was probably one of the most naturally musically talented people I’ve ever met.

I quite like that. Multi scale instruments don’t suit me though unfortunately, playing chords is difficult on them. A regular fretted one would be very interesting.

So do millions of others. Whilst I don’t necessarily agree with the way the BBC is funded, it doesn’t exist to cater its New Years Eve programmes towards a pretty small demographic; ie twenty or so members on here. I was seeing people on Facebook saying they enjoyed it, lots of people liked Stormzy’s set for instance. Others just liked it because it was happy, and nice to watch on NYE.

What are you all doing in on NYE anyway? Shouldn’t you all be out playing?

Depends what you mean by performing. The bassist is Dave Swift. Look him up, he’s played with pretty much everyone. He’s played with Jools Holland’s band for decades. Touring all over the UK and Europe in the process. He doesn’t jump about, or entertain; that’s not his job. If you don’t like something, then don’t watch it or listen to it. Nowadays you can watch practically anything you want, when you want, so put on something you enjoy, because for every dissenting voice on here, there’s probably hundreds if not thousands across the country who did enjoy it.

Surely the mix that’s heard in the broadcast would have been done over the last week or so, since it was recorded?

I was just reading something about how in experiments non-musicians are actually able to correctly get the temp of a song right, usually within a 4% accuracy. A fascinating book called ‘this is your brain on music’. I guess adrenaline could speed things up a little on a gig though.
