1.
Nope, E nearest my face like a normal left handed bass then G D A. I'm used to it now but I've never seen another with strings like mine, I wish I'd just learnt the right way up now, I'm not even left handed at anything else!
So they're not the same as everyone else's just upside down. You've got the A, D and G switched. Your heaviest string is next to your lightest string ? My tutor had his tuned G, D, A, E (. Jimmy Haslip has his the same, but now plays a 6, so his C string is top most. Both play left handed.
2.
I've realised what I'm doing wrong here, I have a right handed bass that I play upside down so my strings are like normal people's strings other than the E string (the fattest one) that is at the top for me,which is odd I know but that's how I learnt it. So as I look at the strings top to bottom I have E G D A
You mean G, D, A, E ? One of my tutors at uni had his basses tuned the same way.
3. An electric one . I think it depends on your personal tonal goals. A lot depends on how you play. I've heard people play my bass, and it sounds different to when I play it. I personally like John Myung's sound in recent Dream Theater recordings, that's a 6 string Musicman Bongo, that has 5 string, string spacing. There are also a couple of Prog metal bands that I like who use a fretless.
4. I have a Protec Contego, which I think is a little shorter than the Mono that I used to have. It's a better case too.
5.
I'd strongly suggest learning score as opposed to tablature. Score might take a little longer to start with, but it's far more informative. As for how to read. It's just like reading words, it goes from left to right. The stroke down to the dot indicates the speed it is read & the where the dot is placed indicates the pitch.
This . I'd also maybe suggest a lesson or 2.
6. My charts have always ended up covered in notes, and exclamation marks etc. They tend to change too when you get to technical rehearsal.
7. How will you keep changing the pages ? The few show things I've done have been using the traditional printed pages, that can be challenging where page turns are concerned, but surely an iPad you'd have considerably more.
8.
+1 this really is one hell of a reverb unit! Really good for bass as well with the ability to apply the reverb to certain frequencies and keep the low end clear of mud. Shimmer and Blackhole settings are worth the price of admission alone.
The shimmer is amazing, and the modechoreverb.
9. What I find odd, and it's not just with bass players, in fact I think guitarists are worse, is that they don't learn to sight-read from the start. Most players of 'classical instruments' learn reading as they're learning to play. For me, I played violin before I played bass, and learned at read music as I was learning to play. So when I took up bass, even though I was self taught to start with on bass, I automatically learned the notes on the fretboard, and in bass clef. I didn't realise you could play without having to read music.
10. I find play a 5, or a 6 in my case, makes sight reading easier, simply because it means I don't have to worry about position shifts, I can concentrate on the chart.
11.
I'm wondering what the point of amps in the 50 to 100w?
Mine's 75 watts, and is the size of a shoe box.
12.
I think they should be banned. 6 strings? On a bass ? It's supposed to be about the low end, isn't it ?
Eh ?
13. ambient

E string.

Aren't these called dead spots ? Something to do with resonant frequencies or something ?
14. I just did yet another gig with my little Phil Jones Double 4 combo. A jazz gig at an art gallery in Wolverhampton. The band was a guitarist, 2 vocalists, keys, drums and 2 sax players. It was perfect, it wasn't even on full. I have it tilted upwards, and it works better if it's against a wall, that's how it was designed, (there was some smart ass on here made fun of that), it has slots cut into the rear, placing it against a wall allows for the sound to reflect off the wall. The Double 4 has 2 4 inch speakers.
15. I've had both, unless you can get a used Bass chorus deluxe, I'd just go for the standard analog chorus.
16. Something totally new for me, I've never done this kind of thing before. https://soundcloud.c...ding-ascend/81a An 8.1 surround sound composition. Made up of dozens of edits of bits of piano, and some cello Arranged to form 8 tracks. Each would be played back through a separate speaker, in such a way that it creates echoes, and movement. The middle 2 would be the front centre 2 speakers, moving outwards the next 2 tracks would be front centre right and left, then onwards to the rear centre right and left, then finally the rear pair of speakers. You actually create movement from front to back, and rear to front. At least that's the theory smile emoticon, I only have 2 speakers, so it'll be Thursday when I get to uni when I see of I'm right. Here's a rough diagram of the set up in the 8 channel studio. There's no set numbering of the speakers, so this is how I've done it. So the centre 2 channels on the arrange screen are speakers 1 and 8, then moving outwards the next 2 are 7 and 2, then 6 and 3, then finally 5 and 4. It's still a work in progress, but I'm quite excited about it.
17.
Not just some of the best music I've ever heard, but some of the best bass playing ever recorded imo. Anthony Jackson on the first (his bass playing is just so wonderful) and Marcus Miller on the second record. can anyone tell me what record Willie Weeks played on.?
I love Anthony Jackson, his playing is amazing on everything. I don't like Marcus Miller though. Anthony Jackson did a lot of playing on a really early Chaka album, who's name escapes me now, the playing however was quite simply sublime.
18. Don't give up by Peter Gabriel. Probably featuring Tony Levin.
19. Aren't round wounds generally like that to some extent ? Are you using nickel or stainless steel ? I find nickel to be smoother. Or try a coated string.
20. Have you played a 5 string before ? That's an awful lot to spend if you haven't.
21.
I think I need a decent tab which shows the rhythm and the music and somehow i'll work it out!! Its a horrible piece to learn!!
Like I posted above ? 😊
