1. The bassists who got me into bass are..... Tina Weymouth Adam Clayton Simon Gallup Flea Nathan Watts (or maybe actually Stevie Wonder just for Masterblaster) There's loads others & my bass influence actually comes from the likes of Depeche Mode, J M Jarre, Howard Jones, Human League & several other 80s synth musicians.
2. If you play in a trad rock, indie or similar type of band then you might find that a little chorus is the only effect needed (as any other effects might stop you sounding like a trad rock or indie band ). If you're wanting your band to sound different or if you play another type of music (such as House, HipHop, Dubstep, Electro or Folk), then effects are a great starting point to tailor your band's sound. I went for decades with just Bass > Amp, then @ 6 years ago I got a multi fx unit (a good starting point to find out what fx you'll use). Now have a small pedal board that gives me "My" sound. No synth pedals on it, but I can sound very synth like. Edited to tidy up the gobbledygook that appeared.
3.
We obviously play different pubs. At the two pubs I have played most often in the last three years: #1 Back resting against my cab, wall brushing my left shoulder (try not to bang head on the wall-lamp), hi-hat brushing my right shoulder, mic-stand directly in front of me. #2 Back resting against my cab, left hip jammed against pub piano (No Drinks Allowed!), hi-hat brushing my right shoulder, mic-stand directly in front of me. I suppose I could do a static pogo ...
Only if you want to play Hi Hat for your drummer!
4. I've got a 'Roadworn" carpet if anyone wants it? Tea & coffee stains, door treads & a couple of other period features. Let's start offers at £3k
5. & here's me trying to introduce barstools to the band!
6.
So, if the Roadworn thing is still going strong with guitars and basses do you think it will start to move to other things? Will that tatty but new Hiwatt or Marshall sound better having had the transformers 'soaked' for 100 hours at the factory? Actually, its possible it might, that's not fair as only the tolex needs to be torn for a comparison. Of course none of the knobs will be missing or replaced by unmatched types, neither will the strap handle be broken or fag paper be around the fuse. How about drums? Pre-worn skins? Who wants pristine white telling the world you don't really play much? Surely only a matter of time?
I thought Ampeg already did Roadworn?
7.
Thanks lefty, this was probably my first post that actually made any sense to anyone haha. More importantly, with the amount of different cakes coming to this debate, we will need an 8x10 on its side to act as a cake table to fit em on! so they still have some use Lol.
Should it now be changed to a cakex10? Sorry, coat gotten.
8. I'm one for learning the songs & if it's a song that you have difficulty with, then write the chords down & you might find it ample.
9. Bass? Whassat then? How about Toffee & Coffee cake? Surely you can't have tea with this...
10. 'tis chocolate orange cake (with bits of the segments), so surely coffee?
11. Is it called the "Bad Cab" because of the design?
12. With cherries on top!
13. I prefer this finish to "relicing/roadworn"... It's called "Damaged desktop".
14.
The problem seems to be IMO, many (not all) of the people who are favouring combos over bigger rigs keep talking about volume. I could buy a 100 watt combo and crank it to 10 but it would still sound feable, and sh*t!
I prefer a combo over a big rig. Nothing to do with volume, but because I'd look like a tw@ taking it into a venue that only held 100-200 people & I want to do just the 1 trek from the car (which would carry a couple of 8x10s). I agree with you in the fact that it's about sounding good at lower volume. But there's a lot of smaller rigs that sound phenomenal at lower volumes & put paid to the antique fridge.
hmmm..I'd like to see ..and hear..you try to get 1000watts of bass out of 2x112's without the cones flying across the room.
Barefaced?
15. Whilst an 8x10 (or two) looks the part on stage, there's cabs of much smaller design that can beat it in every department. In sound quality, low end, dispersion, weight & portability. And Trouser flapping!
16. Sounds like there's much playing about to be had! Another idea for your bi-amping idea would be a pedal with 2 outs (such as an octaver with a wet & dry out). You can then affect both your sub and clean channels with effects separately, though this would probably mean that the xover you have is left out.
17. Sweet! Great interview (from both sides). How do you get time to work, practice, play gigs, write a blog, interview folk AND keep the wife happy? I'm struggling to do more than 1 of those at any one time just now (& only managing to go to work & keep the wife happy).
18. Isn't the EvoII made in the UK & the EvoIII made in the PRC?
19. Looks like an awesome "small" board. Looking forward to hearing some of those new pedals.
20. If you listen to any of the songs that my singer has written, I've written the bassline (no auto correct to make it say "baseline"). He plays the guitar & sings the song, the rest of the band compose their own parts. If the singer or any other band member doesn't like what someone is playing, then they make suggestions to try other ideas (no demands made). If I can't work out the chords I ask him (I usually just look at what he's playing if I can't pick it by ear). When I write songs, I write the chords, melody & bassline (& sometimes vocals or a solo). It's then up to each musician to make the song "ours". I was talking to a Banjo player yesterday & said my singer plays banjo too, but he prefers to play guitar when singing. He asked what kind of band I was in & I said "I've no idea. There's the singer/guitarist, me on bass & a mandolinist who plays penny whistle". He asked if it was a folk band? I said nope, probably closer to Jazz & we ain't jazz either! If I left & a different bassist joined, it would be a very different band. Sorry about going completely off topic, but my point is that a musician subconsciously wants to better themselves & playing in a band enhances that desire.
21. You banned envelope filter?!?! Why not have him in on writing some baselines with you? Get him interested in what he is playing & then he'll get a better understanding of what the bass' roll is. A lot of my baselines follow the vocal melody, usually harmonizing.
22.
That claim is normally made by people who have done it. It may not be the whole truth, but at least it's based on practical experience. On the other hand, those talking about dispersion, mixing drivers, matching motors etc. are generally parroting what they've heard.
Maybe with your 80s rig, I don't know. I found that getting low end depended on the cab & not what sized drivers it housed & was why I went for 2 15" in separate 3 1/2 foot tall cabs. Now I use 10s & can still get just as much bass.
So why are Fender Twins better on their end?
Harder for the audience to read the F word & get offended?
23. 'twas posted about a year ago, but still good to see.
24.
The wattage thing is old news. TC processes their signal and boosts it to 450 and 750 watts or the equivalent of those watts in loudness. The RH450 and Staccato are as loud as any 500 watt amp I've owned and the RH750 is very much louder. TC had a lot of people beating them up when these numbers came out. It didn't alter the fact that the volume coming out of the speakers connected to these amps is as loud as TC says.
I wasn't rehashing the wattage thing as I know the RH450 is a very loud little box, I was just curious about the output at 2.6Ω. Even if it is 11w more like TC say, there's still more cabs to move more air. The wattage wouldn't stop me buying one (it's lack of money that does that ). You've answered my other Q regarding the RH750.
25. You do realise you're gonna have to sit that on top of an 8X10! Nice portable set.
