+1. Within reason you can get pretty much the same result with any cone size from an eight to an eighteen, with the single exception of the dispersion angle. It isn't all that practical to get 30Hz out of eights, or 4kHz out of eighteens, but it can be done. There is absolutely no characteristic ten vs twelve vs fifteen sound.
A couple of weeks ago, my guitarists found out what dispersion is when the room we hired had a 4x12 guitar cab, stood right in front of it & kept turning it up because he couldn't hear himself. I suggested that he move further away & he stepped forward & to the side. He still thought he was quiet. The other guitarist pulled him over to where he was standing, straight across from the cab & he stood there for the rest of the sesh (& turned down too).
Sorry, but this simply isn't true, though it has become the received wisdom on BC.
I think you may have misunderstood what I was saying, though I could have worded it a little better. But maybe a good thing as you then went on to explain quite a few things. What I meant was that a driver's diameter doesn't mean it has a particular sound. It's down to lots of factors. The 2 15" Marshalls that I had in the 80s had nowhere near as much bass as the 2x10" Makbass that I use nowadays. Though this is most likely a mix of better designed drivers and better designed cabs.

Cone size makes no difference to the sound. It's all down to how the driver is made & cab design. The benefit a single 15 has over a single 10 or 12, is that it can move more air. a 2x10 can move almost as much air & a 2x12 can move more air, but the disadvantage there is more magnet weight (though with neo, that's hardly an issue). To top that off, PJB use 5" drivers (I believe their bigger cabs have 21 of them). So to put it simple, the more air you can move, the louder you can go.

THere's not an option for my position... Not tried one, but would be high on the list of contenders.

Good stuff! I doubt I'll get anything in this month, but I'll be listening to all the entries after Xmas.

Then whichever you prefer the sound of.
I'd prefer the Marshall because it's a Marshall...
& their bass gear is nearly as good as Behringer! If it's for your bedroom or playing with an acoustic guitarist, then whichever you prefer. If you're gonna play in a band, whichever is the loudest until you can get something that's suitable for in a band. I've gotten away with a 30w combo at a gig a few times, but I'd rather have something designed to play gigs with (which I have).
Not surprised it's slow having to re-educate the rest of the band first! Massive admiration for your determined effort to do something different!
I don't know if it's working. Both the guitarists want to play Stereophonics, Franz Ferdinand & so on & think we should make most of the set covers. The drummer is quite a talented musician & does a bit of writing too, so it might be a DnB writing combo, so I feel sorry for the singer!

Started another band & after a year, I've finally got a full line up. Still debating what we're doing music wise. I advertised to start an Acid Jazz/Breakbeat/Funk band, but I could only get 2 guitarists, a singer & a drummer & none of them know what either of those styles are! So it's a rock band with Dubstep/Techno/Funk basslines. I'm trying to get some songwriting going on, but it's sssllllooooooowwwww!
Sounds like fun and not a million miles away from what I'm looking for.
It was great fun. Unfortunately the singer took a stroke & now has no interest in music.

My last band was a mix of Folk & Americana (with Blues & Jazz thrown in). We appealed to the Folk audience as it was the singer on either acoustic guitar or banjo, the trad folky lady on either uke, mandolin, bohdran or spoons & me either on acoustic guitar or lekky bass going through my fx. Here's some stuff from our penultimate gig's rehearsal... https://soundcloud.com/bassg/sets/bigroom-practice

3mm I find anything over 1mm to thick, even for bass! Myself & both my guitarists found out that we all use the same gauge pics, .73mm. My previous guitarist liked his pics not much thicker than a ciggy paper.

Calling Bass Players in Scotland. Calling Bass Players in Scotland

Same here. I've been wanting to take part since it started, but my band is nowhere near gigging capability as yet (much to my dismay). -

Phyllis Nelson - Move Closer Kiss - Prince Another one bites the dust - Queen -
Ignore the watts, use your ears. That goes for any amp into any cab.

I think I need to have a talk with the guys & give them all clarification on what we're doing & make sure everyone's in agreement. We did have a meet up & a talk about what the band was to be, but that was before we got the 2nd guitarist & the singer we have now. It was me, the drummer, the 1st guitarist & a turntablist/keys player. We was all in agreement then, but the keys moved away & left the band & the guitarist seems to have forgotten what the plan was with only me & the drummer being the ones not wanting to play a covers set. I think it's gonna be a "let's get the originals back on track or we're gonna be a function band".

From what I've seen of Ampeg cabs, it's very hit & miss on build quality (do they use Gibson's QC dept?).
-
I take it by "Amp" you mean "Amp & Cab or Combo" & not just an amp with no speakers? I'd be trying out the Genz Benz stuff if it's new you're after. As for speaker config, that's up to you. I'd suggest going to a good bass shop or 2 & trying out a few different things. Lozz makes sense.

It depends on what I'm trying to play. Most of the time I'm happy with my playing & enjoy learning & getting better, but then occasionally I'll try to play something that's in my head & find I can't quite nail it. I'm usually less happy with other musician's playing skills than my own.

Buying/trading a used amp: would you expect a power cable?
xgsjx replied to Roland Rock's topic in General Discussion
I voted no. When I got my Markbass combo there wasn't a power lead with it. I have plenty of computer power leads from my kettle collection, so it's never an issue. -
Help out a BC member - ALL DONE, THANKS EVERYONE!

Bieber's an awesome bassist. (apparently he almost plays it too) -
I was hoping to get the entire band to write as a collective, but I'm starting to wonder if that'll work? I've done a good bit of songwriting over the years, but as I'm not a singer, I don't do much in the way of lyrics. It's usually been me & the vocalist that have written all the songs. I think the drummer's the only other band member who's ever written a song. The singer is new to the band & bands in general, but he can sing & is willing to pull his weight.
-
When you first started your originals band, & you had your first few jams, what did you do from there? Did you start writing your own stuff straight away & do your first gig with the majority being your band's own stuff? Or did you learn a bunch of covers & throw in one or 2 of your own songs in the hope that the audience might like them? I've always been from the former type of bands, but both the guitarists are strictly from the latter. I told them that I can get us gigs & they're both giving it "we should learn this & that to cover" etc, which me nor the drummer agrees with. All of my past originals bands have had 1 or 2 songs to start us off when jamming & they sometimes make it onto the set list, but that's about it.

You'll get a 2nd hand Markbass 2x10 Std & probably have change. I'd say get to a music shop & try as many different brands as you can.
-
Doesn't neccessaraly have to be a cover band. My past few bands have been originals bands that chuck in 1 or 2 covers that aren't played like the original.
