I've had a load of US Lakies: 55-94, Bob Glaub PJ, Joe Osborn 5, as well as a bunch of Skylines: 55-02, 55-02 fretless, Hollowbody and Decade. The only one left is my favourite of them all, the fretless 55-02. I also have an Indonesian HoBo on the way home...

Amp and speaker in all its glory, but what goes in comes out. When you play that bass in the review (a revamped P-bass Lyte???) you have a creamy nice tone. I believe you sound the same regardless of amp... Also a thought about the switching between "none" and the cabinet setting: "None" had that cardboard box-ish tone that sounds dull and boring on its own, but is very much needed in a live/band mix. My own experience is when your bass sound is nice by itself it gets lost. A bit like the great Anthony Jackson; his sound is not that flattering alone, but in the music context it just sits right there. A good review from you as usual...

Within the "Best amp head (500W to 1000W) you've ever owned? (Or should definitely avoid!)" headline, I'd say: - Genz Benz Streamliner 900 - Quilter Bassblock 800 If I expand to "Best amp head regardless of wattage" I'd add following amps: - Eden WT400 Traveler - Eden WT800B World Tour - Vanderkley Spartan Eden was my first big love, but the two I use now are the lighter two: Quilter Bassblock 800 and Vanderkley Spartan. Li'l Quilter is an "all tricks pony" usable for every situation I can think about, with ANY type of bass. The Spartan is the choice for electric bass only, but then some...

My old Fender J'78 is/was a really heavy beast. With the Badass bridge and three massive brass knobs and three(!) pickups it was somewhere around 8(!) kg... The tone was fantastic, but I got a slipped disc from that bass. Now it and I have undergone surgery. The bass has a new body from Guitarbuild, a nice very light swamp ash body, not complete, paint job is still to be done. It will look like the original, but without a lot of weight. It will certainly affect the tone, but a bass that won't get played has no tone after all. Still, the neck is a massive chunk of maple, even if it is rather slim. You could club an ox with that. I had another body made for the bass some years ago, but I forgot telling the guy I wanted the 70's position of the bridge pickup. It was a very good looking body, but I never felt at home with the "misplaced" pickup, so that body went to an old defretted 70's Jazz neck. Also a project that is still lying waiting to be completed. Unfortunately my pic's went down the Photobucket drain. I get new pic's in a while...

Wow! This is really a nice job! I can't wait to see it completed...

I like the LH500 for its simplicity, price and tone. I got it demoed by Larry Hartke himself a few years ago. I don't know how well it can take the beat and heat of long nights, but that goes for all amps in that segment.

Well, I've said no to the deal. I really like that bass, but will sure not have use for it. Recognize this...? There are other things that I like...

A few years ago I had the opportunity to play the 34" oversized Les Paul bass. At first I was a bit sceptical, due to [i]the fact that it was just a guitar with a long shaf[/i]t. But after a few hours playing the thing I found it really nice. At least playing sitting down. When standing, it felt a little bit awkward, like it wasn't hanging on your body, but a little bit in front of your body. (Everything feels awkward when you are raised up with Fender basses.) Anyway, the total impression was that it was a really good bass, but at the time I had no need or use for it. Now - all of a sudden - a nice bass at a more than nice price has surfaced, making my G.A.S. pressure rise. The last posts I've seen about this particular instrument/model are some years old. Is anyone out there sitting on some valuable input? Any experience in the bass? I'd be glad to hear before I do or don't do anything stupid...

Why bother? Well, because we can... If you have the opportunity to switch the pickups from parallel to series and use both it can mimic a P-bass quite well.

I used to have a QSC PLX 3402: a fantastic power amp. 2 ohm able in 1700 W RMS per side and 3400 W RMS bridged in 4 ohms. 9 kg Class D. Has high pass filter that cuts at 50 Hz (not good), 30 Hz (perfect, no audible difference) and no cut. Without the filter you could actually push the woofers out of their frames by pressing the strings towards the pickup... QSC is a company of Pat Quilter, who makes the Quilter BassBlock 800...

Why only reliced basses and guitars? Easy: [b]ALL[/b] guitards and (some) bass players are easy to trick and fool... Why not reliced amps? Noone wears them around the neck... It ain't that cool...

I got this nice Crafter bass after our late great sax player. A lot of love in this one! The only thing I've done to it other than "cleaning off" a Roland synth pickup is shaping and installing a bone saddle at the bridge. That made a real difference in tone. Pure magic! Unfortunately, the spruce top's bleeching shows where the synth pickup and controls were taped... This is the old model with a nice arched back... The most playable acoustic bass I've had. The acoustic tone isn't that big, but with the thing plugged in, it is magic...

These are the fretless basses I own right now: A beautiful Skyline 55-02, my main fretless. A hobby project: an old defretted Fender neck on a custom built body from Bizzotto guitars in Sweden. Needs shaping of the fingerboard before it is ready to play... Now this beauty has arrived:

I have only played two four strings: one US that was very bad(!) and a MiM that was very good. The US was badly set up and had the frets sticking out that nasty, flesh eating way. The Mex was exactly how you expect a good bass to be. Obviously, there are "Monday samples" of everything. I really like this instrument, but it won't be a hit, unfortunately. It is hard to be inventive and innovative, especially when you set the industry standard a million years ago like Fender themselves did...

Had these before: Ned Steinberger Design, very "upright-ish"... Fernandes 60's Jazz Bass copy: VERY good! Like the real deal, this one... I also had this: an old lined fretless Steinberger L2 I bought in Hamburg in early 1984. Three digit serial number beginning at 2...
