I do like how streaming services are coming along. Here's an example of how it's worked for me. I was in Tesco, looking at the pap they have in their top 10 CD chart. I saw the Paloma Faith CD that looked interesting and I was vaguely aware that it was quite4 decent. So rather than risk £10 on the album, I whipped out my phone, looked her up on Spotify, dragged her albums into my "new music" playlist and headed home. Once home, I opened up Spotify on my PC and the albums were there in my playlist. I listened, liked and then made a radio station from her songs. Regina Spektor came up, as did Lana Del Ray - all of whom I quite liked. So I've got around half a dozen new albums to listen to, without risking money on a CD that may have been pants. Oh and when I'm at work, I can change around my playlist that I use in the car, download anything new whilst I'm there and have a totally different set of music for the trip home. This, to me, is simply awesome. Probably more awesome than my taste in music lol
This is indeed awesome.
Streaming services still have a long way to go. If they are going to be people's sole means of listening to music.
Good point and I wonder if the same sort of thing was said about radio or TV in their early years. it makes me wonder what is the nearest to sole means of listening to music now and what will it be in 10 years?

You got it right flyfisher - the times are a changing and it makes no difference what anyone thinks about it. The recording industry already spends a lot trying to stop illegal file sharing, but they can't seem to accept the reality change is not reversable. Governments are concerned about too much freedom of information and they want to control the internet, so file sharing is demonised, but the kids don't care I live in a rural community and we get an excellent connection. Many such locations receive subsidies to improve connectivity and as flyfisher says...... we've seen nothing yet.
I Got John (Kiogon) to replace the MIM pots and at it made a huge difference to the sound. At some point in the near future I'll re-drill the neck pup location.
So did I and I agree - the pick ups are fine and John's wiring kit made a big difference. It was a good bass after the work, but still not as good for me as a Squier CV, or even better the Farida Jazz I bought from Dawsons new for £149 delivered.
-
I had a Mex Jazz with the same problem - the pick ups were misaligned due to the holes being drilled in the wrong places, so it was impossible to adjust the pick ups because they caught on the scratch plate. It was enough to put me off MIM Fenders - that and the awful electrics, 5 piece bodies and ridiculous price compared to far better quality Chinese instruments.

More and more people don't want to 'own' stuff anymore, they don't want CDs or DVDs or even mp3s. Everything is streamable now, so 'ownership' isn't necessary. It's still useful to download music from i tunes, but even that will decline with the increase of quality streaming, higher bandwidth and universal access. I think it's great
I can only once remember being asked to write out our set list out for the PRS, and that was in Anglesey many, many, years ago.
Yes, we stick to the rules round here I submit all our live gigs to PRS once a year (we only play about 30 gigs a year). The payment isn't much for us, (about £7 a gig for pubs I think). They have a separate scheme for big venues and festivals - it's a lot more dosh then. I play in an all originals band, so no cover versions to buy or steal for me . If anyone wants to cover any of our songs, you can have them free - just remember to report to PRS when you play them Back on topic - do what feels right.

Help please. Overwater contemporary Jazz 4 - good or bad
redstriper replied to Black Coffee's topic in Bass Guitars
I tried a lot of new Jazz basses last year and by far the best at any price for me was this: http://www.dawsons.c...aple-neck-white Have a look at this video review from basschatter allthumbs: http://youtu.be/Aks3fSHA1jU I sold my Mex Fender and Squier CV Jazz after getting this and I've seen used ones go for about £100. Having said that, it's very subjective and I would recommend playing before buying any bass. Steve. -

Mixing Competition/Learning Resource - January POLL ADDED!
redstriper replied to 51m0n's topic in Recording
I have just listened to the 3 different mixes posted so far and I'm amazed by the differences. This is very interesting and quite an eye opener for me, since I've never had anyone else mix one of my recordings and the differences really are staggering. I had a feeling they would all sound very similar, but each one sounds almost like a different recording. It really shows how the mix is such a vital part of a song and also how everyone hears things differently and has their own idea of how different instruments and voices should sit together. I will send the links to the other band members to get their feedback too. Thanks and respect to those of you who have been brave enough to take this on, I'm sure we will all learn a lot from the process. Si - the mixed levels don't match, but it doesn't seem so important, I just turned the volume up and down when required. The mixes are so different that the volumes shouldn't affect anyone's opinion of a particular mix. -
Am I a musician, or do I just have a good memory?
redstriper replied to thebrig's topic in General Discussion
I had the same question in my mind a few years ago, having the same lack of knowledge, no lessons etc. I was playing with a brilliant pianist at the time, doing some original recordings and I was just winging it really, playing whatever came to mind. After the session, I couldn't believe it was me on the tape when we listened back - it sounded great. I said to the pianist - 'wow, can I call myself a musician now'? He replied - 'you play an instrument, so you are a musician and you always will be, never believe otherwise'. He left the studio and I never saw him again - he died on the way home. Since then, I have always called myself a musician. -
No drugs: (Nicotine and the odd beer excepted)
Two of the most addictive and dangerous drugs on the planet - that's like saying 'No drugs (cannabis and the odd E excepted)'. I won't bother compiling a similar list of musicians who take/took illegal drugs, because it would take forever.......
-
Most of your favourite music (and art in general) was probably created by people on drugs - just a thought

VW Touran works for me.

Don't see why not - it's not like it's against the law or anything

Excellent story and what music is all about - playing for the sheer pleasure and spreading the joy. A similar thing happened to me some time ago, but with slightly less good fortune: A reggae band was playing a local venue and their bassist couldn't make it last minute. I got the call to fill in and turned up as requested. The guitarist also didn't show, so it was just bass, drums and keys. All went well for a few songs and then their dep guitarist turned up......... pissed as a fart and tripping on LSD. He stumbled on stage and set up directly in front of me - he was actually standing on my toes! For the rest of the gig he played loud, tuneless heavy metal guitar all over the sweet roots riddims and completely ruined the night. Furthermore, he had bad wind and continually farted, so I was gagging by the time I left the stage in shame. Didn't get paid either. Hope you don't mind the hi jack Bilbo - just thought I'd inject a bit of balance PS: I played the Ashbory and plugged into the PA so at least I could make a quick get away.

We are so fortunate to have the choice - vinyl, CD, cassette, open reel, mp3 in a choice of bit rates and a host of alternative digital formats. And the only thing that really matters is the music
-
[
In the end the most important thing is: Do I like the music I am listening to or not?
Exactly. And what's so bad about listening to music whilst playing computer games, browsing the net, or as background 'wash'...? Bandwidth is still an issue in many parts of the world and mp3s allow easy fast music sharing on a global scale. It's easy to find music in higher quality and lossless formats if required, but most people are happy with standard mp3s. I don't believe they devalue music for the vast majority of the population at all.
-
If mp3s were invented first, would anyone bother inventing vinyl or CDs to replace them?
-
MP3s are far more accessible than CDs or vinyl and they are creating a revolution in music distribution across the globe. Most people don't care about the format - they just want to hear and be heard. Sound quality has been excellent for years and it just isn't an issue for anyone except audiophiles these days. It's the content, not the sound quality that matters, music should be cheap and plentiful and available to everyone, rich or poor. It shouldn't be the precious preserve of the rich and treated with reverence. If you are well off and you can afford the luxury, fine - you can buy the gear and treat your room, but don't expect the rest of the world to follow. You are an audiophile Si, because you know the difference between 320 and 128 kbps, while most people couldn't care less. You are an audiophile because issues with the reproduction prevent you from enjoying music and I find that a little bit sad. It's ok to be an audiophile and there's a place for you, but there's no cure
