The first step to understanding cab loudness is to throw away the lies about cab power ratings - most of them are useless. It doesn't help that there are manufacturers still talking about cab X have 500W power output. It's utter BS. 500W acoustic power output is more than the Pyramid Stage PA rig at Glastonbury, which is the size of a few large trucks and worth more than a large house. Read this: http://barefacedbass...9%20Oct2010.pdf Although other manufacturers quote sensitivity ratings, most are lies - Ampeg and Acmes are accurate. Epifani claim 100dB for a 1x12" containing a woofer with 95dB sensitivity - to get that sensitivity you'd need three of those cabs! It's all rather frustrating, marketing trumping honesty...
ok i kinda get that! my head is still confused by the numbers tho, ie putting 300w into the dubster is like putting 1800 w into the bb, but its fine to put 500 from a db750 into the bigbaby? (i know ive probs missed the pont totally but feel like my heads gonna explode a bit) andy

that would be helpful, the only bit i found confusing was im so used to being like right my cab can take 600w and my amp is 400 that be fine and loud, all the other stuff as you say is confusing. :-) andy
Andy, you don't hear electrical watts. Over 90% of the wattage you put into a cab comes out as heat. Less than 10% comes out as sound. According to Hoffman's Iron Law, the bigger a cab and/or the less deep it goes, the better it will be at turning electricity into sound and the less waste heat it'll generate. Big Baby sensitivity = 94dB therefore efficiency = 1.6% Compact sensitivity = 98dB therefore efficiency = 4% Dubster sensitivity = 101dB therefore efficiency = 8% So 300W electrically into a Big Baby gives you 4.8W acoustic output (300 x 0.016) and 295.2W of waste heat. To get 4.8W acoustic output from a Compact you need to put in 120W electrically, whilst to get 4.8W acoustic output from a Dubster you need to put in 60W electrically. The Headlite is about 250W into 8 ohms so right at the bottom of the power we recommend for the Big Baby. Furthermore, it's not an amp I have any experience of but I have found that in general micro-amps do not produce as much power in the real world with bass guitar as their specs claim, compared to heavyweight amps. Some micro-amps do better, and they're the ones we tend to recommend more often. As I said in my email, I think you'd be fine in your band with a DB750 driving a Big Baby but I'd be amazed if the Headlite has enough power to play loud enough without obvious clipping.
ah ok alex, wasnt doing this to be cheeky just i know you are a busy guy but thanks for explaining it andy

then i guess maybe you've just been unlucky ive only heard good things about these. your doing what id do which is return it under warranty, i might try a replacement first tho if your actually happy with the sound you were getting? andy
The Big Baby has tones more mids and highs, which are going to be louder in an ears sense, and the Compact will have a fair bit more of them, than the Dubster.
yeh i kinda get that it will need more lows so more watts to get the bb as loud as a dubster, the bit after having a think that i dnt understand is the whole 300w into a dubster is the same as 50w into the bb? also that the bb can says its ideal wattage is between 200-600w but alex said that my headlite might struggle yet it puts out 400w and isnt quiet. andy

there seems to be quite a few around here, were you pushing the amp hard? or was it doing this at low volume? its just ive heard about ss class d power sections not liking being run at full, and no sound does sound like a output transformer, but it could just be a bad connection on the speakon connection? im sure some ppl will be along soon andy
-
this is some info that i got from alex, im trying to arrange to go and try out a dubster soon! but cant find a big baby anywhere near! but im thinking the dubster is gonna be loud!!! Big Baby = 94dB Compact = 98dB Dubster = 101dB So for equal SPL (loudness) then: 300W into Big Baby = 100W into Compact = 50W into Dubster So 300W into a Dubster would be like 1800W into a Big Baby (which would kill it!) not sure i entirely understand tho but didnt wanna trouble alex with pointless silly emails! andy
I'd love two DB 212 at 4 ohm but that might be a bit too much? What about a 210 + a 115?
i dnt even wanna think about how loud that amp must be when its pushing 900+ watts at 2 ohms!
which gets us into sealed cabs with a bass roll-off so you flood the stage less...?? which is a nice little slant on things. If it were me, turning up at the venue without knowing the stage-rig/monitor situation, then I'd look after my angle and have the bigger rig and also control it, ie turn down, if need be. If the same rig/engr travelled around with us and I had to move some of my own stuff, then maybe smaller. We are a loud band and despite 4 mon mixes and a monitor engr, I still sometimes get left to my own devices if time is running away..and that is where I need the minimum of 2x210's I am thinking I'd indulge myself in a DB750 and 610 of some sort... for handful of gigs per year.... but then I come to my senses, but it is still GAS Peacehaven is about 50 miles from me.... maybe we can hook up and try and the DB's amps and cabs ... I have 2 cab configs that I would I love to run a DB750 thru....???
i used to used pau's db750 with my old 610hlf and the volume it would put out was silly! 750w through a 412 the volume would be silly! so i can see why the 2x112's might be not enough if he was used to that! andy

Markbass ta503 wattage output question
0175westwood29 replied to jaybass 70's topic in Amps and Cabs
It wnt as that would be a 4 ohm load, the only way it'll put out 300w is when u use 1 8 ohm cab mate Andy -
Markbass ta503 wattage output question
0175westwood29 replied to jaybass 70's topic in Amps and Cabs
Its just a way of wording that the min ohms rating if 4 ohms so 2 8's or 1 4ohm cab. So you can either daisy chain your cabs or you can put one in each outlet, you'll still end up with a 4 ohm load either way mate. Hope that helps. Andy -

just a bit of an update! alex was very quick in getting back to me and offering his advice, basically he feels my headlite might struggle to push the lows that the big baby needs :-( dnt wanna give up on it yet feel i should at least give on a try if i can find one. andy

dnt think so bud im pretty sure thats just a way of sending a signal, similar to a di you'd have to amplify the signal to drive a cab andy
I exchanged quite a few e-mails with Alex when I was considering a Big Baby too. I just loved the look of them and the idea of having a complete one cab solution (I was playing mostly pub gigs at the time though). In the end, after discussing the kind of tone I was after and the kind of players whose tone I liked Alex pointed me in the direction of the S12T. It's brilliant. I've had it a couple of years now and I have suffered no cab GAS since. It might not necessarily be a better option for you but it would definitely be worth kicking the ball around with Alex before you get so besotted with the BB that you're unwilling to consider other options. Either way, I suspect you'll be a happy man.
yeh im currently talking with alex, about my past rigs etc so we'll see what alex suggests andy
Yep from the tech spec on the web site, BB's sensitivity 96db and the S12 is 102db. A different cab doing a different job .... BROADBAND Sensitivity 96dB - similar to most conventional 1x12"s Stand anywhere in the room and you will hear almost exactly the same tone - no other bass cab can achieve this! When i sound check i'll wander around and the bass does sound the same every-ware,really amazing Also, it sounds more or less the same at every venue , slight tweek on the bass or a slight change in hand position and i'm all set to go !
that rig looks awesome!!!!! i have been in love with the blacksmith since seeing troy sanders from mastadon using one! andy

kinda what i thought with the secondhand thing well alex has emailed me so hes gonna get back to me, if im ever that way i might just call in. andy
Sounds like you need the one month trial that Alex offers My rigs so far have been (ignoring the ones I had before I met Basschat) Markbass LMII with 2 Aguilar GS112's Aguilar AG500 with 2 Aguilar DB112's TC Electronic RH450 + various TC cabs RH450 with 2 Bergantino HT/EX112 Tecamp Puma 1000 Barefaced Big Baby T There was some overlap with those previous rigs where I had different combinations. I'm completely happy with my current rig and have had no desire to change it at all. It's monstrously loud, weighs nothing and sounds awesome. Totally a one cab solution for me. Second hand? you'll be lucky. If you are ever in Suffolk you are more than welcome to try it out.
thats the problem if i didnt need a cab right now id sell and get a cab from alex, but i cant really afford a new cab and also im in 3 dif bands and practice alot so cant wait 8/9 weeks for the cab. and chris b, yeh thats kinda why im a bit worried i have read the blurb and it seems to say that it will put out similar to a 2x12, need to find a nice friendly basschatter with one down in the plymouth area. andy
Bear in mind that that BB is a relatively new cab. Not many people own them and most of them seem very happy with them. The likelihood of one coming up on the second hand market must be pretty slim... However - someone is selling a vintage http://basschat.co.u...ectronic-rh450/ and although there is interest in it, the prospective buyer sounds like they may be getting rid of a Compact...
yeh i know its a long shot i know andy

selling these due to wanting to go back to being all valve the swr is a awesome stupidly light weight head, has alot of eq options and an onboard compressor. the hartke is an awesome 112 cab, it works really well with the swr head, also with a 4 or 8 ohm swtich its very versitle. looking for £650 for this ! ...or im really wanting a orange ad200b or a thunderverb 200 or an svt also if there is anyone interested in my whole rig? i would trade the swr head and 112 /115 cabs for a cab and all valve setup so maybe 115 obc and an ad200b or an svt and a battered but working 410hlf rig so you'll get a really light really nice rig for you heavy valve stack? please get in touch if your thinking of going lightweight. Also looking at markbass heads now to really looking at the 800w heads so either of the sd heads (sd800/1200) or a lm tube 800 andy
Andy - you have constant cab GAS! Sorry, can't help with this query, but I wish you luck in finding sonic nirvana eventually
haha! i know!!!! but i cant help it they look really nice and ive wanted one for a while, my 610 never sold to fund one. im not in a manic rush to get this but i do wanna try one, i might throw alex a email but as i can buy new i just feel like im wasting his time. edit: ive sent alex a email asking a few points but im still looking for views from owners. andy
