I exchanged quite a few e-mails with Alex when I was considering a Big Baby too. I just loved the look of them and the idea of having a complete one cab solution (I was playing mostly pub gigs at the time though). In the end, after discussing the kind of tone I was after and the kind of players whose tone I liked Alex pointed me in the direction of the S12T. It's brilliant. I've had it a couple of years now and I have suffered no cab GAS since. It might not necessarily be a better option for you but it would definitely be worth kicking the ball around with Alex before you get so besotted with the BB that you're unwilling to consider other options. Either way, I suspect you'll be a happy man.
yeh im currently talking with alex, about my past rigs etc so we'll see what alex suggests andy
Yep from the tech spec on the web site, BB's sensitivity 96db and the S12 is 102db. A different cab doing a different job .... BROADBAND Sensitivity 96dB - similar to most conventional 1x12"s Stand anywhere in the room and you will hear almost exactly the same tone - no other bass cab can achieve this! When i sound check i'll wander around and the bass does sound the same every-ware,really amazing Also, it sounds more or less the same at every venue , slight tweek on the bass or a slight change in hand position and i'm all set to go !
that rig looks awesome!!!!! i have been in love with the blacksmith since seeing troy sanders from mastadon using one! andy
Sounds like you need the one month trial that Alex offers My rigs so far have been (ignoring the ones I had before I met Basschat) Markbass LMII with 2 Aguilar GS112's Aguilar AG500 with 2 Aguilar DB112's TC Electronic RH450 + various TC cabs RH450 with 2 Bergantino HT/EX112 Tecamp Puma 1000 Barefaced Big Baby T There was some overlap with those previous rigs where I had different combinations. I'm completely happy with my current rig and have had no desire to change it at all. It's monstrously loud, weighs nothing and sounds awesome. Totally a one cab solution for me. Second hand? you'll be lucky. If you are ever in Suffolk you are more than welcome to try it out.
thats the problem if i didnt need a cab right now id sell and get a cab from alex, but i cant really afford a new cab and also im in 3 dif bands and practice alot so cant wait 8/9 weeks for the cab. and chris b, yeh thats kinda why im a bit worried i have read the blurb and it seems to say that it will put out similar to a 2x12, need to find a nice friendly basschatter with one down in the plymouth area. andy
Bear in mind that that BB is a relatively new cab. Not many people own them and most of them seem very happy with them. The likelihood of one coming up on the second hand market must be pretty slim... However - someone is selling a vintage http://basschat.co.u...ectronic-rh450/ and although there is interest in it, the prospective buyer sounds like they may be getting rid of a Compact...
yeh i know its a long shot i know andy

selling these due to wanting to go back to being all valve the swr is a awesome stupidly light weight head, has alot of eq options and an onboard compressor. the hartke is an awesome 112 cab, it works really well with the swr head, also with a 4 or 8 ohm swtich its very versitle. looking for £650 for this ! ...or im really wanting a orange ad200b or a thunderverb 200 or an svt also if there is anyone interested in my whole rig? i would trade the swr head and 112 /115 cabs for a cab and all valve setup so maybe 115 obc and an ad200b or an svt and a battered but working 410hlf rig so you'll get a really light really nice rig for you heavy valve stack? please get in touch if your thinking of going lightweight. Also looking at markbass heads now to really looking at the 800w heads so either of the sd heads (sd800/1200) or a lm tube 800 andy
Andy - you have constant cab GAS! Sorry, can't help with this query, but I wish you luck in finding sonic nirvana eventually
haha! i know!!!! but i cant help it they look really nice and ive wanted one for a while, my 610 never sold to fund one. im not in a manic rush to get this but i do wanna try one, i might throw alex a email but as i can buy new i just feel like im wasting his time. edit: ive sent alex a email asking a few points but im still looking for views from owners. andy

just trying to find some info on these cabs, i realise i can email alex but i have seen he is very much over worked when it comes to emails atm so im hoping some of you guys will have some answers? basically im really happy with my current swr/hartke rig but i just can't get the idea of having a big baby out of my mind! love the looks and also like the abilty to be able to get very clear lows at high volume, i can get the clear lows with the hartke but obviously i can't get alot of volume, its fine on its own for my blues band but my downtuned metal band it struggles with out a 115 underneath. could the big baby work as a single stand alone cab? id use my swr headlite so it would be getting im guessing about 300w as it puts out 400w at 4 ohms, would this be enough power? also im looking at getting one secondhand, what sort of price is fair for a secondhand big baby? i know its unlikely but even if i sold my hartke and 1153 trace cabs i can't afford a big baby, plus i cant afford the wait with no cabs. but im up for selling my cabs to fund a secondhand big baby, if it will be ok as a one cab option, however later i would be looking at adding a second cab either a bb sub or another bb probs the sub as it is less pricey but thats another desicion. so basically looking to know; -can i use it as a single cab -second hand price and ive asked on some old threads but they may not be being watched anymore but any one have a big baby near plymouth? as obvioulsy trying one out would be the ideal thing to do. all help thank full andy
The LH500 does have mids - you just need to rethink it and turn the bass and treble down and the volume up. If you can get to Herts/Essex border i have a GK MBFusion and a Hartke LH500 you can try out. I also have an Ashdown 15" cab with an Eminence Deltalite speaker in it which does a very good Barefaced impersonation (up for sale if anyone wants it - havent done piccys yet but its a 9/10 cosmetically and weighs next to nothing. £130 would sort it)
Isnt flat eq on the lh500/1000 bass and treble at 3 and mids at 10? So mids anywhere but full gives you a scooped sound?
The point I'm always trying to get across when discussing pairing mismatched cabs is related to their differing phase response. The best way to understand of this is to think about the pickups on a Jazz bass. Think of the neck pickup as being a cab with a more bassy sound and the bridge pickup as being another cab with a more trebly sound. The common assumption is that if you pair a bassy cab with a trebly cab you'll end up with a stack that does bass and treble well, whilst getting the mids from both - "best of both worlds". But what actually happens when you both pickups on full on a Jazz bass (or any other bass with two pickups in parallel)? You don't get the bottom of the neck pickup plus the top of the bridge pickup and the mids being a mix of both. You get the bottom of the neck pickup, the top of the bridge pickup but much less midrange than from either pickup! Why is that happening? It's happening because there are phase differences between the two pickup's output and so instead of all the output summing fully, some of the output sums partially, some of the output cancels partially and some of the output cancels fully. This is a good thing with bass pickups because it gives us a very different third tonal option on a two pickup passive bass. The same thing happens when stacking dissimilar cabs. Now on the one hand this isn't a problem if the end result is loud enough and sounds right. But on the other hand, the reason someone tends to buy a second cab is because they want to add something in terms of both tone and output to the tone of their existing cab and as the pickup situation illustrates, you won't get that tidy summing - you'll get partial cancellation so the resulting tone will be unpredictable and equally importantly the rig will be less efficient. There's also the matter of mismatched power handling and the cabs' response diverging further at high SPL when things become less linear, so the rig may perform worse and worse as you turn up - exactly when you don't want it to become less efficient! We designed the Compact and Midget to work together - the two drivers have identical motors and the cab alignments are such that the phase response is very close through the lower frequencies (where it matters - at higher frequencies the path length messes with the phase response whether you have identical cabs or not).
Well explained, but i do think that some of this makes ppl believe that putting a 410 and 15 together is wrong which is bad, i trust the science but other ppl on here seem to take this science bit far to seriously when ppl ask for advice. As ppl on the forum say one thing but if you go to live show most bands will have a 410/15 setup. So ii can see where newbies get confused, i just think the first and most important bit of advice should be to listen and if you like what u hear then your ok. Obviously make sure cab ratings are ok but thats easy to do. Andy

Not to stop ppl discussing this further but whats all the fuss? If you want to mismatch whats it matter. Also arent ppl who put a compact and a midget mismatching? I know its not only about size after reading through a few threads on this but if having a mismatched rig works for you then i dnt see the big fuss Andy (im prepared to get slated for this comment btw)

i used to have the pro-6 and there was no way that it had 1100w at 4 ohms so im guessing the 8 wnt have 2500. on the flip side, never had a prob with the sound so i'd imagine it will sound awesome, but if the power input is the same as the 6 id be wary as my 6 did used to trip the mains in nearly every pub my old band used to play! was very annoying. andy
-
in that price range id look at markbass, there eq is really good and also you've got the filters which can change the sound of the amp alot. plus they aren't lacking in power at 8 ohms if your using a single cab, also ill also put forward the headlite a very nice really light amp with a really adjustable eq, and the aural enhancer which i actually like(i know some ppl dnt) andy

barefaced cabinets looking for one to tryout?

thanks bud -
cool glad i got it right, not that im concerned about mixing cabs just wanted to make sure my thinking was correct. andy
-
i think the only way you'd cause damage by doing this would be by taking 2 cabs of different rating and putting them together with a high output amp, is this a valid reason for not mixing the cabs? ie lets say a 200w ampeg 115 and a 410hlf which goes to 500w with an svt pro-6 1100w at 4 ohms, you might not notice the 115 farting due to the volume of the 410? as it would easily take the 550w being put to it? so a newbie to this setup could through inexperiance blow there 15? i put my 112 hartke with my 1153 trace cab but as there both 300w and my headlite is only 400w, i dnt worry about pushing the cabs but it sounds good so i dnt worry to much about mixing them. is my logic right?
-
yeh getting the 8 ohm cab means you can add a second cab later. im sure lozz will be along soon, but i wouldnt worry markbass heads are loud so 300w in to a 410 you'll have a nice loud rig! as i said im sure lozz will be along soon hes pretty much got the same rig apart from the head hes got the lm tube. andy
