1. Good choice!
2. Sorry for going ot, but I fancy knocking myself up a nice 12 incher Any top tips, billynoband?
3. How about a lovely Zon Sonus 4? Beautiful transparent finish "Caribbean blue" ash body, slim graphite neck and Bart's. It would certainly give you a more contemporary tone, and the playability is simply outstanding as well. PM me if you're at all interested for pics etc. Matt

Wal's...
The attached file might help. It's a Wal flyer. Not sure where I got it from, perhaps at the old Music Show when it used to be at Earls Court, but presumably when I was dreaming
That was an interesting read, thanks for posting it
5. This amp shouldn't really sound like this. You've probably tried this already, but have you checked the input gain isn't too high? The Laney should sound pretty good, certainly not as you describe.
6. Yesterday my friend knocked an orchestral stand squarely, and with full force, into the body of my Zon. I couldn't actually bear to look at it for a minute or so, but when I did examine it there was no discernible damage whatsoever! Either the finish is extremely durable or I was unbelievably lucky. My friend was somewhat distraught at what he'd done and very apologetic, but I tend to take a fairly pragmatic view of such things - a bass is only an object after all. I'm glad I didn't get angry and shout at him Glad your bass is okay too; having been an active bass user for a long time I always try to make sure that I have a spare PP9 in my gig bag.
7.
yes - I now own that very Highway One Jazz - I played it for a couple of hours last night and really love it. I've been playing 5 string for 4 years now after a few months on a 4 string, so was a bit scared about going back to 4 string. I started 5 string on my Ibanez, then changed to the Lakland just over a year ago. I love the Lakland, but I don't think it will be used much now. I'll probably hang on to it for a while in case I've made a mistake though. Mark reckoned the Highway One was not very different from a USA Standard in all the ways that matter - maybe that was a bit of sales pitch, but I'm pleased with it anyway. Seems really good value for a USA Jazz, I think list for Highway One is £649, list for a Standard in sunburst is £1035 ish. Don't know what the going rate is for them, but I was pleased with the deal we did. I'll have to find out what you get for the extra £400. I know the Standard has a hard case, strap and toolkit whereas this one only has a gig bag - so I guess that's £100 of it.
I thought that bass was a corker - in fact I preferred it to most, if not all of the USA Standards I've played recently. The neck was like a proper Jazz should be - nice and slinky. I thought it sounded superb as well - quite light in weight and very resonant. So far as I know the main differences (from the US Std) are in the hardware, finish and case, but fundamentally they are very similar instruments. You also got a badass bridge with your Jazz which is a great upgrade from the standard Fender model IMO. I'm sure it'll do the business with your band!
8. Glas you got it sorted Martin, which Jazz did you go for? I have a severe hankering for one of the new US Standard models. Mark had a really nice Highway One Jazz in the shop last time I was in there, was it that one you bought?
9. Nice looking basses - those Deluxe Jazzes sound great. FWIW those pickups are standard on that particular model.
10. That's funny, I used to live in Churchdown until about 5 months ago! I live just the other side of Newent at the moment. PM me if you fancy meeting up at some point (one of us will have to brave the A40 road works lol!). Can't promise I'll be a lot of help, but I do have a Bart-equipped bass, a good passive Jazz (w/Seymours) and a few other bits and bobs.
11. martinbass, where abouts do you live? I live in the Gloucester area and used to own a 55-01 with NTMB. If you want to hook up one evening and try some comparisons against some of my motley selection you'd be more than welcome. I could probably tell you whether I think the Lakland is behaving properly compared my experience with one as well, if that would be any use to you?
12. Man, I'm sorry you have to sell your only bass. I hope it all works out for you. Having played one I can say that these are great basses, especially for someone looking for something with a real "thump" and a that's a little bit different to the norm.
13.
well maybe im turning over a new leaf iv also took to pm'ing people with advice about sales too, dunno whats got into me
14. Thanks for the suggestions. I guess it's going to be pretty much a matter of experimentation!
15. I've just rediscovered the joys of effects, and realise that I have accumulated enough units over the years to put together a neat little pedal board. Recently I have just been using my tuner and compressor, but fancy getting a few more sounds out of my rig. I was hoping that some of you that are more familiar with using effects could help me sort out the order I should be connecting them in. Here's what I will be connecting, and in roughly the order I have them at the mo. : Bass-> Boss TU2 (tuner) -> EBS Multicomp -> DOD FX25B (envelope filter) -> Marshall Guvnor -> Aphex Bass Exciter -> Amp. I'm always uncertain as to where the compressor and exciter should ideally be in relation to the more "effecty" effects. I look forward to being enlightened! Matt
16. I'm sorry, but it seems as though this guy must have a seriously inflated opinion of himself. Why on earth does he think it's okay to offer unsolicited advice like that? I suppose it could also be some type of weird "chat up"- I can't help feeling that there is some sort of ulterior motive hidden in there somewhere.... ie. "why don't we hook up so I can show you where you're going wrong"... Ugh.
17.
They're not readily available, you have to get the custom built for you by the man himself...so going direct is the only way. Just google his name and e-mail him about them mate!!! Not the cheapest pre-amps about i don't think, but quality assured and the fact that you can tailor it to your exact requirements is pretty cool i think. Don't/didn't you have a Fodera?
Yes I do, but I was still interested to learn that the preamps were available directly from Mike Pope. I've got a passive Jazz here that I've been toying with the idea of "activating". I must say that I thought the playing advice he gave you was very interesting, it's given me plenty of food for thought (I'm somewhat theory-allergic!) and I'm going to try and practise a little differentlyand see where it takes me. I also thought it was generous of him to take the time to write to you as he did, seems like a decent bloke!
18. Very interesting, great post bassjamm! I didn't realise that the Pope pre-amps were available to buy without being attached to a Fodera bass. Is there a web site? I'll have to google it and see what comes up.
19.
Well, the Tyler was meant to be with me today. Unfortunately, Business Post put it on their vehicle going to Gloucester instead of Glasgow . Had it been at the Glasgow depot I would have just gone down there to get it as it's not too far away. Gloucester, on the other hand, is about 300 miles from here..... Oh, well. Tomorrow it is
I live near Gloucester, I could pick it up for you, if you like
20. I loved mine - the neck was wicked, build quality absolutely first class and the tone to die for. I couldn't cope with the neck dive though, it really bugged me. Might not be so bad worn lower though, but I prefer to wear my basses fairly high.
21. Sounds as though you should already be able to get a "Chic" type of tone with your Stingray. But, fwiw, the other tone you are looking for sounds almost exactly how I would describe the tone of my Zon Sonus. It has a real warmth and clarity, amazing piano-y sustain and plenty of trebley sizzle if you want it. The graphite neck possibly has something to do with it, although I have owned other graphite necked basses (Modulus and Status), and this sounds more organic somehow. The mid-range on mine is switchable on the preamp, enabling scooped to more up-front voicings. You'd possibly pick up a good used one like mine for just under a grand, the only problem with Zons being that they don't seem to come up that often over here.
22. Fabulous sounding basses those double-buckers, you'll love it! Best "band" tone I've ever had was from a Warwick Thumb BO, how I wish I still had that bass
23. Just add some gold machine heads now, and it'll look well bling! Seriously though, it's looking good!
24. I agree with Ian. Although it does look great in the pictures, it could well turn out to be a real lemon. I've seen a few "copy" guitars that people have purchased through ebay, including a "Steve Vai Jem" and a "Gibson Zakk Wylde". Initially they looked good, until more detailed inspection and a play revealed terrible construction, lumpy necks, awful pickups (even though they appeared to be branded, lol). In particular the Jem copy is probably the worst guitar I have ever played, it just wasn't possible to achieve an acceptable action on it. The tremolo seemed to be cast out of something close to pig iron and all the bolts threaded and rounded off after only gentle tightening! I'm not saying that this bass is going to be like that, but I would definitely advise sensible caution before spending your hard-earned on something which appears too good to be true. Whatever the truth about this bass, I agree that it does look good, if nothing else!
