It is weird! I was going to say that with round core especially, make sure you've got a nice strong bend in the string before cutting so the core can't 'slip', but it's odd that the others were ok, suggesting you'd likely done that. Don't want to teach you to suck eggs etc

Does boutique just mean expensive, or does it just mean doesn't look like a Fender etc? Or maybe if it could look like a Fender, but it has a figured top. But what if it has a fancy top but wasn't expensive (relatively) and is a Fender? What if I can get someone to make me a bass that costs less or the same as an Indonesian import. Is the handmade one still boutique in that case, or does it depend on whether it looks like a Fender? I think I need a shower

One thing I've learned through depping is a greater appreciation of some bass players and lines I'd never have given a second thought otherwise. Being forced to learn material and being exposed to genres out of the usual familiarity zone is also a great way to freshen up the playing, I've found.

Lovely bass, enjoy it! I picked up a Stingray Special last year, having owned a 2 band from the early 90s. The special is a really great evolution of the Stingray, offering familiarity and something different in the mix imo, which is helpful in my justifying owning 2!

I have an 89 Stingray that I acquired from the original owner, a good friend of mine, in the early 90s. For years it was my only bass, went to uni with me, player in numerous bands etc etc. it was a dream bass for me at the time. It's a bit battered now and doesn't get played as much as it should, but it'll be the last bass I part with if I'm ever in the position of having to offload my selection (being in the fortunate position to now have several basses). It still plays and sounds great, and looks cool too. In fact I'm a bit inspired to take it out to my next gig after writing all that. So, obviously in your position I would hang on to it if at all possible.

That is very tasty indeed. Enjoy!

What are your irrational prejudices? I have some bonkers ones...

To be fair, this thread was intended to be about irrational prejudice. -
Plugging the bass into the output of my pedal board when setting up and wondering why I'm getting no signal, is something I have done more than once 😐 Never happens in rehearsal.

I'm sure they do their checks, but makes you wonder why someone who made the decision to purchase such a niche bass would decide to part with it via CC? I guess there are all sorts of scenarios which could explain it.... -

The thing is I have yet to rehearse with this band, first time I met them was at the venue for the first gig! There are no sheets/charts, so was a character building experience! Seems like they're likely to offer me more gigs (already got a couple booked), in which case a rehearsal so I can try the backing vocals in a less pressured environment doesn't feel too unreasonable!

Based on the trailer, I'm not holding out much hope. The celeb cameos feel like a portent of doom to me. I'm not sure that ever works, does it? I really do hope it turns out to be decent.

Thanks all, I guess like any new skill you just have to apply yourself consistently and accept you'll be crap to start with. It's not so much the technicalities of singing (although I'm no singer, sadly) it's the working out how my brain can learn to unlink the singing from the playing bit.

I'm reaching out to the BC community in the hope that some amongst you will have been the process and can offer some advice. For years I've managed to avoid singing backing vocals, but I've begun depping for a band and it's clear it would be beneficial if I could add a bit of vocals on choruses etc. Problem is I've never been able to sing and play at the same time! When I play I feel so mentally 'locked in' that I struggle to even speak or respond off someone talks to me, let alone sing 😂 Strumming an acoustic I can sort of do it, but bass feels like a wholly different challenge. I've been playing for years, so it's quite a way into my playing career to learn, but for those of you that have been through similar, how did you crack it?! How ever McCartney, Lee etc do it is beyond me?!!

That is a large increase! Did they explain why (sorry if you've explained elsewhere, sneaky work-based forum browsing!)?

Would be interested to hear what you've been quoted! In my view a lot of instrument setup work has been undervalued over the years, and these days a guitar setup is one thing that you can't really buy off the internet. I always think about how much time a job is likely to take, how much do I think it's reasonable for a skilled person (who's also taking liability for my instrument whilst on their care) to charge for that time?

Thanks for posting this. Long time fan of Living Colour and Doug Wimbish. I know Vernon Reid's playing style divide opinions in guitar circles, but I have long admired his very dark sound and unique approach. Love Muzz Skillings' playing on the first couple albums too. Very peased but not surprised that they still sound so good. Unique band in the rock space.
