I really want to practise with the bow but it's so LOUD... Any advice? I partly don't want to upset my dog who thinks I'm the worst musician in the world, but also don't want to put my neighbours through it. I love the sound (when it works) but if I could make it only as loud as playing pizz that would make it a lot more practical.

Which one of them drives the van, how much of their own gear do they load in and out and whose floors are they sleeping on each night? My vote goes to The Skints who seemed to barely stop touring throughout 2012, despite getting their van and all their gear nicked and only getting back on the road thanks to the generosity of their fans and a donation from Jagermeister.

Fuzz Faces are good but you need to add a deep bass signal to it really to make it work. The Chunk Systems Brown Dog is really good for this stuff, and apparently so is the Iron Ether Oxide - I've never tried one but that's what it was designed to do.

Don't be silly. If the OC-2 is the meat then the Bugcrusher is the gravy, it's great for adding frequencies on to deep sounds, I use it on everything. I do want to try the Mooer Lofi Machine though, it looks like it does a ton of cool stuff in such a little box. I've also got into using the ring mod in my M9 because it's nice to be able to ramp some params on the expression pedal. That's why I was looking for something with patch memory.

I never got around to getting one in the end. I've heard reports that it suffers a bit from noise on the carrier signal but haven't tried one myself.

I didn't realise their second album was out. Man Alive has got some really clever stuff on it so I'll be buying this.

I like the way it looks, probably wouldn't pay more than £400 for it though - it's a Precision after all they're not exactly rare.

That drummer sounds awesome. I wouldn't be surprised if Lemmy hires him.

[/quote] Just take it steady, the stamina will build up slowly and the more you get comfortable with it the less effort it will take to play it so you won't tire so easily - double win. When I started on DB I couldn't do more than 10 minutes at a time, now it's much like playing bass guitar.

Same story around here. And all the open mics are all singer-songwriter acoustic guitarists. There's the odd jazz jam night but those guys a bit beyond me tbh.

If I'm doing punk/reggae stuff then you could argue that my harmony vocals are 'not needed' because they were never on Clash tunes or Specials tunes or whatever. They're certainly all over Maytals tunes and Desmond Dekker and Alton Ellis though. Similarly you could say that my octaver is 'not needed' because all those '70s guys just played Fender basses straight into the amp, but in the '80s there was lots of synth bass and programmed bass in dancehall reggae. From there it's not a big leap to start incorporating elements of house music, drum and bass, chiptune stuff, etc. That's why I don't like thinking in terms of what's 'needed'. I like to think of what might sound fresh and nice and put it in there. And when you're gigging with a bunch of other bands based in similar genres you will sound different and you will stand out. And the audience will be glad you put a bit more effort into your sound and gave their ears something different to listen to.

TBH I've had the same bass for about 10 years that I really like so I basically don't play basses in music shops. The last bass I did pick up in a music shop was a '60s Hofner hollowbody and I didn't plug it in.

I'm sure I remember him playing SWR amps/cabs in the early Jamiroquai days. Although to me his signature sound is a Streamer with stupid amounts of compression on it. Who cares what the amp is.

I play really hard stuff to show everybody what a badass I am. I do it every weekend because showing everybody what a badass I am is the most important part of my involvement in music.

I probably wouldn't have taken up double bass if I hadn't got the urge again from reading BC, and now I do way more gigs (and a way bigger variety of gigs) on upright than I do on bass guitar, so yeah that's opened my eyes a bit and definitely made me a better musician.
