[/quote] Incidentally, a sample rate reducer when fed with a fuzzed envelope filter does some really amazing chunky vowel sounds. The benefit over using a formant filter pair is you still get lots of bass frequencies. I discovered it quite by accident by putting my Squeezer into my Bugcrusher one day.

  3. TBH if I had your London/Bristol location I would just book a lesson with Jake Newman and find out how he does it. He's a very well-regarded teacher here on BC.

For the record - as apparently one of the most complained-about members still active on BC - I pretty much never set out to offend anyone, and I have sometimes deleted stuff I've posted when drunk and I've also apologised to mods in PM where I've felt I treated my audience in an over-familiar way. Sometimes I assume people will understand that I am being ironic (unless you are a long way down the autistic spectrum in which case I am genuinely sorry if I offended you) and go ahead and post something that is clearly an irony-based joke, but either nobody ever appreciates my real sentiment or I've just got one people who just enjoy reporting my posts. But yeah, my main issue is I assume I'm talking to reasonable-minded friends, when in fact many of you may be Tories or demented in some other way, and I accept that it's wrong to assume that you're all perfectly reasonable people who are capable of empathy.

It's a fuzz through a band-pass filter, and the LFO movement in the filter is a pulse wave, which you won't be able to sync to the track unless you've got a very clever tap-tempo filter, and pretty much nobody buys them so nobody makes them, which is annoying. I've got one, but I'd like some choice in the market FFS. But yeah, that's exactly what the sound is. Good luck reproducing it.
  6. I dunno man. The other thing I like about the Squeezer is there's a nice fuzz in there too so the fuzz/env combination works great for those nerdy Parliament sounds, the filter still pumps along just great. I don't think I'd want an envelope filter that didn't have its own effect loop or some other way of giving it fuzz without ruining the envelope. Cheddatom: Don't you find that feedback loops often end in runaway volume levels?
  7. I would do exactly what fretmeister said. Warm distilled water, no detergent or anything just distilled water, give them a proper soak/rinse to get rid of any residues and then let them dry out completely before plugging them in again.
  8. Sample rate reducers work really well on bass. It's like having a ring modulator that you can actually use! Great for mild ruining of your sound at one end of the range to total harmonic destruction of everything you play at the other end. Has a great flavour to it as well. It's also good for adding higher order harmonics to an otherwise bassy sound to make filters more interesting.
  9. Forgot to mention the Fatman. I think my Octavius Squeezer already covers the sane ground plus it has tap tempo. I have been considering a ModFactor to take over env/lfo filter stuff just so I could get a midi clock into my M9 and sync the two, but I don't know where I'd find room for one. :-(
  10. Tbh our guitarist does most of the dub delay / reverb stuff. When I do use delay I need tap tempo and for it to be synced to anything else time-based so I think I'll stick to the M9 for that. Feedback loop is perhaps worth considering but I guess I'd need a limiter too and I don't have room for two things. :-\

  13. Yeah but I've got trems on the M9 and I don't use them. The nice thing about the M9 is you can tap tempo or set it to MIDI clock, and set up a few patches to the same effect at different tempo divisions, so I think time-based effects are probably out - the M9 does them spectacularly well.
  14. I've got room for one more pedal on my board, so long as it's Boss-sized-ish. Current board is: 2-channel mixer Channel A: OC-2 Channel B: Another OC-2 -> Octavius Squeezer -> Line 6 M9 (I mostly use pitch shifting, delay, reverb, phaser) -> Bugcrusher (about to be replaced with an IE Frantabit I think) -> IE Xerograph My main band does dub/dancehall stuff, I'm also doing a sort of jazzy/funky hip-hop band. I don't really do subtle effects, and I often do more than just play bass lines. I don't need an O/D or a compressor. I like pedals that make WTF noises but don't lose the bottom end, although having a parallel loop mixer I can clean blend anything if necessary, or blend with an OC-2. Any ideas?
  15. So it turns out a guitarist I know has a Maschine Mikro so I went to toss about with it the other night, then today I nipped out to Gear4Music in my lunch break and bought a Maschine mk2. Just downloading the inevitably enormous system updates and libraries now. Also found out my superdrive is knackered. Which is not 'super'. :/

  17. That was fun but: It shows how insignificant the later Jamiroquai bass lines are. And he gets the Super Freak bass line wrong and labels it 'U Can't Touch This'. Which is unforgivable. I haven't listened beyond that point. Edit: I listened a bit further and realised he's learned a lot of these tunes from tab and not actually listened to the originals at all. Pretty poor. I wouldn't go as far as to chop his fingers off but if he put his fingers in front of me and begged me to do it I probably would. And he probably should.
  18. I saw it when it was on. It's like a Stones thing isn't it. Let's just do what the Stones were doing and that'll be popular won't it. Really disappointing. You can forgive the Stones because at the time nobody knew what they were doing really, but these guys have had a long time to learn their sh*t. Very poor.
  19. On the first page you compare your involvement in music with your previous addiction to nicotine. I hope you appreciate that one is a destructive addiction and the other is a creative outlet with no negative connotations other than its demands on your time. I would have thought that a religious person would feel a stronger connection than most to his/her 'soul' and find music to be a very spiritual experience. I'm an atheist but I've found the power of music to bond people together has been quite inexplicable and irresistibly compelling. I'm so stoked that - approaching my 40th birthday - I'm still finding players who want to get together with me and create original music, and we're still finding audiences (admittedly smaller and smaller audiences) who thank us for doing it. As I said I'm an atheist so I've always struggled to understand why god would or wouldn't approve of one thing or another, but I am really struggling to find the negative aspect of artistic pursuits, and especially something as primal and spiritual as music. I think if I did believe in god I would probably imagine music - as the fairly inexplicable thing that it is - to be more easily explained by belief in god than pretty much everything else that the religious texts have traditionally attempted to take credit for.

I know the position of placing the bass against your left knee and hip but I tend to move my body too much when I'm playing to do that, so I rely on my hip and partially the thumb of my plucking hand to steady the bass*. I'll concede that If I bowed at all I would be completely stuffed because the bass would no longer be stable enough, so clearly I would need to improve my technique a lot if I ever played anything especially challenging, but it is at least comfortable to do what I do for a few hours and my wrists and back (despite having thin wrists with inflammation-prone tendons and generally rubbish posture) cope just fine. The business of couching it inside your hip bone is the key IMHO. I also read when I was starting out that you should stand the bass upright, then step away to the side until it's at arms length, then lean the bass in to your body. If you then rest it inside your hip bone then I think that's pretty good advice for a beginner unless you've got heinously long arms. * The explanation I heard about making the left knee position comfortable is to balance your weight between both feet almost like you're in the middle of thrusting with a fencing foil. Not that I've done any fencing, DIY or otherwise.
  22. I still have my Squeezer on my board because it's just unbeatable for nerdy filtered-fuzz sounds, so I'm really sad to hear they've now abandoned it. I emailed Richard myself a few weeks ago to ask if he'd done any more development on the firmware but never got a reply. Thanks for that update on Gastric's page though. I've emailed him about the beta firmware.
  23. Yeah it looks like a clever bit of kit but I'm probably going to want separate pedals. One will almost permanently be pitch shifting (the one on the M9), another on a low-pass filter, maybe a third now too into a sample rate reducer. I'll be wanting to do all three freely so I'll need three pedals rather than an Expressionator, but it is a great product I agree.

  25. It's usually a difference in rhythm that causes problems. What I used to do with difficult bits was write down the notes in the bass and vocal parts as beats, one under the other, get them all in the right order playing through it very slowly, and gradually speed it up. I can't remember the last time I had to do that but I have been singing and playing for a lot of years.
