I completely agree that modding is fun and it must be nice to make cheaper basses punch above their weight. Just seems to be real common with high end fenders. I don't think I've seen a Lackland or a G&L that's been changed. Just an observation anyway.

I'm happy to say that I seem to have beaten the curse that is GAS, however I do like to occasionally look at what's about. One thing I've noticed is how many basses get modified and just how many are Fenders. I mean, you see so many for sale with upgraded pickups and a bling bridge but then go look at a Musicman for example and folk just seem to leave them alone. Is this because of the availability of replacement parts for Fenders or is there another reason for it? I remember seeing a USA Jazz for sale not too long ago, less than twelve months old and the owner had switched to di'marzio pickups. Was this because the bass that he'd bought new & paid a considerable amount for wasn't floating his boat? Why buy it then? Maybe it's just that Fenders have become to bassists what Vauxhall Nova's were to boy racers! I dunno, just senseless ramblings on my part.

Right, if you don't need/want to play into an amp like traditionally we would you could buy a small mixer (i have an Alesis Multimix 4 $59) and plug into that along with your choice of mp3 player or computer (i use my phone with spotify). Then simply play through your headphones or plug into a hifi or monitors and your away. It's really simple and better than messing around with amps and stuff I think. But again, it's just a suggestion, some prefer massive combo's that never get turned up.

Do you need an amp? Reason I ask is if your only playing at home you could save yourself the bother/space and just get a little mixer. I wish I'd have done it years ago.

You could also brace the body with your foot and opposite knee and and gently take the strain off the rod by pushing the neck. Then turn the rod at the same time.

I like the look of the Jazz, but historically I just don't get on with J type basses.

I think I'm sold on the idea now, cheers folks. Keyboard shopping the weekend then.

Generally, to work a song out I'll find the common tone then using the circle of fifths I'll figure out the key & chords. I do all of this with a bass in hand. Recently I've been considering using a small keyboard to look at the chords in order to give a better understanding of chord quality rather than relying on the roots. Just wondered what others think really, is it a waste of time or a valuable tool to have in the box? We do have guitars in the house but there ain't no way, no way I'll be seen with one of them.

I've just bought an Alesis Usb mixer. It's a mixer and interface all in one and very compact so easy to carry around. I take it to work and plug my phone in for sneaky lunchtime practice. No need for a DI box and my Tascam bass trainer seems redundant now.

I'm really pleased so far. Only used it with my headphones so far and haven't tried the interface but a very tidy little tool. Will try it plugged into the monitors over the weekend and see how it goes.

Surely artists have to agree if their material is on streaming sites? I'm a premium customer and to be honest I've never really thought about royalties. Can't see these sites disappearing anytime soon tho.

Picked up a new mixer today to use as a practice tool. It's an Alesis multimix 4 and first impressions are quite positive. I'll have a few days with it and do a review if there's not one already.

An often overlooked part of a basses setup, couldn't agree more. 3 mm works for me

Wasn't there a white five string for sale here recently? I'm sure I thought about it.
