1. Dear All, Watching the Take That musical 'Never Forget' on DVD last night (nowt on the telly!). Noticed the bass playing was nicely prominent in mix and sounding extremently good - Nice tone, very assured playing and even a long solo in one of the tracks. The bass player was Ian King, who i'd (not surprisingly) never heard of. He doesn't appear to have his own website. I was wondering if he posts on here or anyone knows him. It would be good to learn what it was like playing that gig, what his set up was etc. I know we've had 'Pro-playing' threads on here before, but what the heck... Anyone help? Steve
 2.
Allegedly PG cmmitted a fraud and dissappeared, allegedly.
Hmm...That all sounds very interesting. I must remember to ask you about it at the next NE Bass Bash. Steve
 3. Hi all, I bought my first bass from Paul Garvey Music in the Newgate Arcade in the toon in about 1985. It was a sunburst Squier Precision (REALLY wish I still had that bass as I'm gassing for a cheap knockabout P bass now..) If I remember rightly, it was a fairly poor bass with the chrome peeling off and weak pickups but it was mine all mine. Does anyone know who Paul Garvey was (if there was such a person) and why the shop closed? Steve
 4.
Can't go wring with Sandbergs in my opinion - here's one of mine.....
I don't believe it! Another MM owner..and I thought I was the only one in the flippin' country who thought they sounded (and looked) superb. Mine's bubinga faced. Steve
 5.
Arr... cheers, man. I've still got my Mpulse so I'll get by. Thanks for the offer, though! I could kick myself... what an idiot. Bass amps, gravity and stupidity don't mix. I'll never do that again.
Hey WOT, great video and stills - really captured the event well. Cheers, Steve.
 6.
Sounds ominous. Bash casualty?
He knocked it off the top of another rig...There was a stunned silence when it happened but WOT reckons it might be the preamp rather than the glass bits. I'm sure he'll be along soon to tell everyone the whole sorry tale. Steve

 8. Yes, Cheers WOT for organising a great afternoon. I thoroughly enjoyed playing some tasty basses (especially the Status Series II and Warwick Streamer!) through some fantastic rigs. Great venue and proper coffee too - plus I also won a set of the strings. All in all very enjoyable and I'm looking forward to the next one. Steve.
 9. 10 CC at Newcastle City Hall 1983 ish. I didn't know it then (as a 14 year old) but the musicianship was hard to beat! That was followed not long after by Status Quo on their 'end of the road' farewell tour . Were they 'havin a laugh or what? Steve.
 10.
Thanks for everyones help i was just curious because it's alot smaller than what i got and i really like the sound on the stuff, but from the feedback people have give i don't think it will be loud enough. is there any posts on small rigs ?
Hi Adunemoon, I DO have a PJB Suitcase and 4B Cab and play in both a covers band and and originals band using a 4- and a 5- string active bass. The rig is absolutely fine for using in pubs. The drummer in the originals band really plays loud (he's also extremely good) and the suitcase does fine, although admittedly the volume knob is up around the one o'clock position. We both wear earplugs and I can still hear the rig; I'm sure some people's perception of the rig is that if it's that small and only uses 5'' drivers, then it must be a bit weedy but that's not the case. Yes, it doesn't do real low frequency rumble but apart from metal, not many bands/punters want to feel rumble. I like to hear actual notes and that's what the suitcase does very well. It's a shame you couldn't pop round for a demo, but for anyone going to the North East Bass Bash this Sunday, I'll be there with the rig. Steve
 11. Aye, Cheers warwickhunt for that. The Hellborg head is something we mere mortals wouldn't normally get a chance to try out. The list price is somewhat restrictive..Non of the shops up in the North East have it in stock (That I've seen) Let's hope the gig you've got on Sunday gets cancelled or something - It's a real shame you can't make it. 12. Hi Tony, Elton John's ''Step into Christmas'' is OK and a quickie to learn. Steve
 13.
Yup, just checked. Its on iPlayer as well as a documentary about the band. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00nt...uran_Duran_Rio/ http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b007b...-f3bc7039e4c5.0
Thanks for the heads up - thoroughly enjoyable.. Steve
 14. Also... I've just received a box from the lovely, generous folks at Hartke UK - fifteen sets of strings in various gauges and a Bass Attack pedal! We'll probably have some sort of raffle to help with the room hire fee...
Get in! I could do with some strings so I'll have a few tickets. Looking forward to the day - Should be a great selection of gear to get to grips with.. Steve.
 15.
No effects for me...
Nor me - I like things as simple as possible but it does mean I'm set up first at practices and gigs. This means I end up helping everybody else shifting their gear!! Steve
 16.
Hi Stevie, thanks for that. Never heard of them but they look very compact so I'll do some research and see where we end up. They are currently £750 at guitar guitar in newcastle :shock Do you have the extension cab? would I need it?
Strictly speaking no, you don't need the extention cab - it's more than loud enough for Church /small to medium sized venues BUT i play in two other bands (covers and original) and use the extention cab to give me more power and better low frequency response. (the full 300W) Steve
 17.
Thanks for all the replies, I haven't been well so a bit slow. It seems I have the easiest and cheapest solution... a floor tuner! Why the heck didn't I twig that :doh I'll have a try and see if that'll do it. Damn, I was looking for an excuse to get a valve head :lol
Hi Tom, For what it's worth, if you were to look for a new amp my Phil Jones 'Suitcase' 300w combo is totally silent and very compact. I use mine in church without any trouble and it sounds superb. You can even unplug the lead from the input without any noise. 18. As far as learning new material goes, it depends on the situation. I'm in two very different bands, one 5-piece playing a range of covers, and the other a trio playing original rock. In the covers band, we'll try a new song a couple of times - if it sounds like it's not coming together we'll ruthlessly ditch it. As for the originals band, we're just about to gig this friday for the first time after about 20 practices each lasting 3 hours. AND we've only learnt 10 songs so far although the guitarist/singer has a lot more than that in his file! Anybody else follow the same route? Steve
 19.
+1 - learn to do this. A quick recovery could mean many of your mistakes matter less to your bandmates (and audience) then you think. It's something I've leaned to be GREAT at.
You make mistakes???
 20. (BTW, I think it's Julian Crampton on 'Everyday' - amazing track!) Quote Oops! Hard to tell on the vid...Know anything about him? Steve
 21.
Very cool, but I have to agree that he's still in Jeff's shadow here. I don't think anybody could outdo Jeff on his own gig! Even the amazing Jennifer Batten is relegated to sideman(woman?) Jeff builds hotrods as well. What an amazing guy! I do love Randy's playing with Incognito though...
+1. Check out 'Everyday' on Youtube - A couple of fantastic live versions of a song I loved when it was in the charts ages ago.. Steve
 22.
Here we go! Where and when, matey boy?
I'm in - enjoyed the last one I managed to get to so how about September sometime? Steve
 23.
Yeah, Sandberg!
Absolutely! I love my California MM. Plays like a dream. Steve
 24. Just watched a few songs from the Jamiroquai video and that is the best live bass sound I've ever heard. Needless to say, I want to join the list of droolers for an Alleva Coppolo. Presumably the amplification is also high end - a combination of gear us mere mortals can only dream about... Steve
