1. Hi All, I have one 'catch-o-matic' stand, which is excellent, and need another one. All the websites selling them seem to be stateside. Are there any UK distributors or shops selling them? Cheers. Steve
  2.
Congratulations on your promotion and lovely new bass!
Cheers Bullet-Rule. This happens to be my last day in the old job (Boo-Hoo) The happy-go-lucky days are gone and the pressure starts on Monday... You may have noticed from the OP that I almost bought a Spector Re-bop 4 Ultra-amber. It sounded fantastic, although the shop did have me trying it through an Ampeg rig! I didn't have GAS until I started on Basschat...LOL Thanks again, Steve
  3.
Hmmm... P pup at the neck Twin J at the bridge... would that be a fretless in sunburst... aged/relic'd maybe! Sounds like an 'new' old version of a bass that is sadly missed
What have I started?
  4.
Many Congratulations on the promotion and big hand for the new addition, that's a sweet looking bass there!!
Thanks, Wooks - I love it! Steve
  5.
re. the G-string run out. I don't think its a dodgy route more likely the pups are mass produced units, branded/stamped for Sandberg and they would thus have not taken account of specific spacing of strings running in toward the nut on different models. Likely as not front and back pup are exactly the same unit and it would be too much trouble to make one with slightly different spacing for neck position. You'd be amazed how many manufacturers that produce exposed polepieces don't bother accommodating this... stand up and take a bow Fender If it sounds OK (and they normally do) as is, I wouldn't worry. Nice bass btw and congrats on the promotion
Cheers, Warwickhunt. I hadn't thought about the angle of the strings. As it happens, one of things I'm really impressed with on the Sandberg is the even-ness of the volume and tone accross the fretboard. I suppose that comes from a decent overall set up. It's better than my Jass, where I tend to get excessive bass from the A and E strings (not always a bad thing I know!) I think the Jazz might benefit from some adjustments.... BTW - Is it you who hates exposed pole pieces? I read that from someone on here recently LOL Steve
  6.
gorgeous bass mate. enjoy! I had a couple of little quality niggles with my JM4 when it arrived earlier this year. Contacted Sandberg via their website - great response. They sorted the problems out, had the bass back with me inside 72 hours, and picked up the courier charges. cant say fairer than that.
Hi L-mac, were your problems similar to mine? It's nice to know Sandberg are helpful. Steve
  7.
Nice looking bass! And as for the things you spotted, as long as it sounds and plays fine then what's the problem?
Aye, you're right! You know what it's like when you buy a new bass! Just (this minute) fitted some straplocks so it doesn't come a cropper... Actually, I had to laugh the other day when I realised it looks a LOT like an old WAL I used to drool over. Must be some subconcious thing, as I didn't give it a thought when I was buying it.
  8. Hi all, Here's those pictures I promised - As you should be able to see, the G string doesn't line up accurately with the pole pieces on the bridge pick up. I've tried adjusting the lateral movement on the bridge, it's still not right. Surely this can't be causing by dodgy PU routing? Also, the zero fret up by the huge plastic nut is grooved to accept the G string - is this normal, as I've never had this before? All in all, I'm delighted with my new bass, but what do you think about the think about the stuff I've spotted? Steve
  9.
Congrats, StevieC! Are you going to put some pics up?
Aye, I'll sort some pics out later today. Should I be posting them in the Guitar porn section or here?? I used to a play 5 string Corvette, and after playing 4 string for the last three years, it'll be interesting having an extended range once more!
  10. Hi all, Following a promotion at work, I thought I'd treat myself to a second bass - so I'm now the proud owner of a new Sandberg California MM 5 string. It's got a bubinga top and looks and sounds amazing! The range of sounds is impressive what with the 3-band EQ and all, and it will compliment my MM jazz very nicely. It's also a doddle to play, well set up with a low action and fast neck. I went looking today and tried a couple of Sandbergs, a Stingray 3-band/piezo, and a Spector Re-bop DLX. Both the 'Ray and the Spector also sounded fantastic (particularly the Spector), in fact better than my Sandberg, but it's the whole package innit? So, I'm in a very good mood.... There's still a couple of pictures of my bass on the Guitar Guitar web site (I go some more discount plus a few other bits so ignore the price) Steve
  11.
Mission by Rush - working on this with my Rush tribute at the moment. Hardest bit seems to be getting the transition from the 5/4 bit under the first guitar solo to the marimba/bass unison part really tight (and the tail end of that part is a bit tricky too). Good fun.
Good on ya! A bit of a challenge that one. Every Rush song has a great bass part. Have you looked at 'territories' or 'analogue kid'?
  12.
+100 lazy gits er oh yeah back on topic Hysteria - Muse Tobacco Road - David Lee Roth version (Billy Sheehan on bass ) Vertigo - U2 Paranoid - Black Sabbath
I bet you really suggested 'Elephant Gun' by Diamond Dave!!
  13.
Midnight at the Oasis - been trying to get the BNH version sorted but settled for the original Maria Mulduar!
Have you got that line down yet? Was listening to it on the radio this moring and it sounds nice but a little tricky!
  14. Cheers, chaps. Thanks for the info. - Those lyrics make me smile every time I hear the song.
  15. Mine was a sunburst Squier Precision, bought from Paul Garvey Music in Newcastle upon Tyne. I'm sure someone on this forum will be able to tell me what the general build quality of Squiers was like back then. I remember it seemed a bit suspect, with chrome peeling off the knobs etc! Can't remember how much it cost back in 1985, but it served me well in my first band formed with a bunch of school mates. I was 16 when I bought it! Ah, the memories! I'm the only one still playing regularly. Steve
  16. Hi all, On Itunes the other day and downloaded The Tubes' album track 'Tip of my Tongue' to add to my playlist of awesome tunes that I've loved over the years. I think Earth, Wind and Fire had a lot to do with it (The Tubes collaborated at lot) and it shows. Completely groovy, dynamic with the bass locked sooooooo tightly with the bass drum. A totally brilliant track - Can anyone shed anymore light on who played on it? Steve
  17.
Cheers BOD, yes it is one of the enclosed type....you've hit the nail right on the head, it has to be the jack, suppose it makes sense if you had to replace them on a HA3500.....tidy darts! I was beginning to think the amp was just unreliable Ta very much!
Whoa, this is strange - I've had the same problem for ages with my little Hartke Kickback 12 combo. If I move the jack around a bit, the sound returns. Looks like I'll have to open it up and check for loose connections.
  18. It may not been in the too distant future especially if I change cabs
So this 'shootout' had mixed blessings then, did it? Lol Or were you planning on changing anyway? For what it's worth, if you like the natural sound of your bass(es) you should have a look at the Phil Jones gear.
  19. I'm the proud owner of a PJB suitcase and 4B extention cab and absolutely love the sound I get using my Fender Jazz. It's served me well in indoor and outdoor gigs and is easily carted around. Yes, I agree that you won't be punched in the guts by my rig, but let's be practical here - In a lot of pub gigs you have to be sensible about your overall sound, with a good balance between lows, mids and highs.
  20. Aye, Let me know next time you do one of these and I'll bring my Phil Jones stuff along with me. It sounded like good crack as well as a unique chance to try out some quality gear! Steve
  21. Church is a fantastic place to hone those bass playing skills. People need (obviously ) to be able to sing along with the band rather than just listen so your sensitivity and playing dynamics come to the fore...
  22.
hi Phil,i owned one for about a week (don't ask) & it played really nice, good tone & punchy as hell.
No, I've got to ask...What happened then? Steve
  23. Hmm..All this talk of Warwicks is making me wish i'd never sold my Corvette 5 String on E-Bay. It was a '96, in Bubinga/Wenge and an active conversion by Overwater. I used to lovingly rub in the wax polish....ah those were the days. Actually - back to reality. Although it looked great, everything I played sounded compressed. I'm quite an agressive fingerstyle player, and these compressed notes just weren't what I was after. I could have altered my playing style I suppose, but you know what it's like...a new bass would be so much better! LOL
  24.
Hi there, I'm a RUSH fan & use Phil Jones !! welcome Si
Hi Si, apologies for taking a little while to respond to you. Have you seen Rush live, and if so what did you think of them? I saw them at Newcastle Arena for 'Snakes and Arrows' and thought they were fantastic as usual. (Also saw them in Brum for R30 and Hold Your Fire way before that) Which PJB amp do you use, and what do you think of that? I was trying my Jazz (in active mode) through my 'Suitcase' and got some tasty Geddy Lee sounds with a few tweeks of the EQ. Steve
  25. I have to admit, those Riverhead basses actually look better than the Burns. I wonder if there was a legal case over the 'ever-so-slight' similarity?
