My Japan 1100s has a hex nut.
When I bought it there was already a very handy normal 1/4 drive 8mm (I think from memory) socket on there with a pair of holes drilled right through the sides at right angles to each other to allow you to use a small screwdriver, allen key, etc to turn the trussrod like a Stingray.
It lives on there permanently.
A simple, but very useful idea.
