1. Contains no horse, just bullshit
 2. I'm just hoping "You're and idiot" wins.
 3.
This is pretty much my entire philosophy, I couldn't agree more. Obviously the higher your level of technical skill the more tools you have at your disposal for creating music. However I still beleive that with a very basic level of technical skill and a solid understanding of chords, scales, modes ect you can create something very musical. Anyway I digress. This is maybe not the thread for this kind of thing. Rob
I very much agree. I'm by no means in any way a great or even good musician, in terms of technical ability, but it doesn't stop me from creating music.
 4.
You'd be amazed how often I get asked by friends / the missus "why don't you upload a video of your slap bass stuff / cross handed tapping ect" To be honest I've no interest in stuff like that. I'd rather write something that sounds good (which is subjective obviously) I may do some slap stuff in the future but only if it sounds musical. You can do whatever you like with them if I ever do get them laid down properly... The audio only of my current clips has tons of pedal clicks / me wheezing ect. so best not use those Rob
The pedal stomps are the only thing that would stop me using them! The good thing about recording properly is that you wouldn't even need a looper, just record several tracks and layer it up in you DAW. I would imagine you are very good at slap and tapping and all that stuff, but I agree, it's pretty useless musically. I find a lot of things are just a way of showing off. Playing an instrument isn't for showing off, it's to create music, and when you start putting technicality above musicality, I don't think you can call yourself a musician anymore. Obviously though, there are times when these things are musical and sound good, and I would be lying if I said I didn't like any song with those things in them, because I like plenty of them.
 5.
Thanks mate, your always very positive with your comments / criticisms and I do appreciate them. I'm definitely not a technical wizard as the occasional fretbuzz and misplaced 3rd will attest to... I only baked a cake once in recent memory (and by recent I mean about 12 years ago) I had a girl coming round I was trying to impress with my baking skills... (dunno why I thought that would be relevent...) I made what can only be described as a jammy biscuit ... it turns out there are two types of flour, one rises, one doesn't... Rob
I didn't mean the "technical wizard" as a negative comment. I meant it in the way that you aren't just showing off how technical you can play. I like most of your songs, and think they are great! And I would like to use a couple of your tracks as background music if you ever get around to making a proper recording, and don't mind me using them.
 6.
I only got one vote last month too, I wonder if its the same person? I shall have to find out and bake them a cake.... Rob
Nope, it was me that voted for you last month. I didn't vote for you this month, although you were a good contender. I have said this before, but you are really the only person that I have seen that can make a song using a bass that I could actually listen to. There's no ego with you. You aren't showing off. You aren't a technical wizard. You just make great songs with a loop pedal, and I really admire that. In fact, most other times, I hate solo bass, but you are a rare exception, mate. I will take that cake, however, if it's still on offer
 7.
No problem , what do I need to do , cooperation wise?
I'll message you tomorrow
 8.
There is a thread that was created to be a photo journal of the the relay, that would be the best place to focus the images of its journey I would have thought .
Alright, geez, I'll do it tomorrow! ....
 9.
I'm Mr Earious...
I'll just call you Mr. E for short...
 10. Well, I don't have time tonight. I'm just about to have a few more moans and sighs, then get off to sleep
 11.
I'd pay not to see one of those!
Fantastic! There's £5 into the pot already! For everybody else, the calendar is definitely still being made, and will be sent out to your house for free, unless you pay us not to. I'm Mr.July.
 12.
Could we have the photos and writeup here on this thread too? Would make it easier for me to tweet the news and allow access to all our followers, not just those who are on FB. Thanks guys
You are such a slave driver! OK, I'll see what I can do, I may need your cooperation with this though, Donald
 13. I'm no expert, but I would sand it flat around the area, then spread some cementy kind of polyfilla type filler into, and sand it flat, then get somebody very good at spraying and painting things to touch them up. Hope it's not too bad
 14. Photos have now been posted on the Facebook page. Please check them out, and if you haven't already, like the page, and ask your friends to like it too
 15.
No probs Milty! It's a great book. You realise that it's author, Mike Senior, is the same Mike who gave detailed comments on last month's mixing challenge?? (just saying in case you hadn't twigged the connection ). Here are some other books I have at home... but I'd wait until you're finished with 'Mixing Secrets' as you might not need them: http://www.amazon.co.../ref=pd_sim_b_5 ^ Doesn't offer much that isn't already covered in Mike's book - if anything - but I'm just a geek who loves devouring books on this stuff. It's also a wee bit more technical, so not ideal as a first text. http://www.amazon.co.../ref=pd_sim_b_1 ^ Highly recommended. It doesn't really tell you anything about the technical side of mixing, but it tell you a lot about how to think about mixing.
I actually hadn't looked at the author, but that's pretty cool anyway! Thanks Skol
 16.
Thanks Rob! Trust me, it still takes hours (and in most cases days) to produce music 'in the box' using a computer. There's no magic involved... just graft But of course it can be done these days without having to re-mortage your house to pay for racks of outboard gear. I've plugged this book many times before, but for anyone interested this is the most useful resource I've found for home music-making: http://www.amazon.co...r/dp/0240815807
Ordered! Thanks Paul If you have any more books that would help a novice like me, I'd like to hear them
 17.
Yeah I've been looking at doing something like that. I must read up on how to do it all, I'm just being lazy really. I'm so out of touch, when I used to record in bands everyone just went to the local studio and someone did it for you on an enormous and confusing looking desk with racks and racks of outboard gear. These days one man and a PC seem to be able to produce top quality recordings. Skol's stuff on here is amazing quality, you'd have had to spend hours and serious money in a commercial studio for that when I used to record regularly. Anyway I'm making myself sound much older that I am... back in the day... etc etc Rob
Rob, to be honest with you, I think your recordings are quite good compared to what I would sound like using a laptop microphone. All you really need is a mic (or DI box) and an interface, then you can get some DAW, like Reaper which is free, or Garageband comes free on Macs, and you're flying. Record your video using your standard camera, mute the audio on it, put the track from your DAW over it, and you're done!
 18.
This is fantastic, you've obviously given everything a good listen... Thanks for the kind words as well. It's always nice to get some feedback. Gear wise it's just my spector legend into a GK MB-200 and 112 Neo cab. I use a TC Ditto Looper for the live recording of the layers. Just straight into the camera mic at the moment but I'm working on something that sounds a bit better. Although I kinda like the video thing... I like to show my stuff is 'live' so to speak. Rob
You could record into a DAW and still record the video with your camera. That's what I do for covers and stuff.
 19. The other day, a nurse wanted to use the paper you sent me, Donald, as something to lean on to write some notes. I was like "No... you can use the desk that the paper is sitting on though...". I restrained myself from saying "No, actually that's a paper my friend in Scotland sent me because he got the bass player from Status Quo to play this bass that's going around the UK to raise money for Cancer Research UK, and I'm helping to organise and stuff, and also my blog is quoted in it *breeeaaattthhheeee*"
 20.
I've tried loads of different brands, including other coated strings. Elixirs are perfect for me, and they last months and months in my hands. I'll pay more for them because I buy them so infrequently. It's quite a hike, though - I doubt it'll attract many new customers. I hope it doesn't mean they are becoming too expensive to produce - I dunno what I'd do without them!
They'll be forced to bring the price down if people don't buy as many at the higher rate though.
 21. Jesus it's tight this month! Incredibly tough to choose! Well done everyone! Lots of very good work! I didn't like a couple of tracks, but you can please some of the people, all of the time, or all of the people some of the time, eh?
 22.
Sorry, but I didn't get what that means. I can guess the first part to mean that it must be tough to play those parts, but the second part escapes me. Could you please explain? b, b
It means you are fantastic and have earned the right to look down your nose at everyone, and think mediocrity is a really bad word
 23.
http://www.stringsdi...Price_Rise.html And cut n paste from Facebook... A note from SD on facebook: Strings Direct "Hey Guys. Just a further update on the Elixir price rise. Below is the new prices effective from 1st July 2013. Not as bad as we were first informed by our supplier. But still a 40% increase on some sets. If anyone feels they bought any stock that they didn't want as a result of the initial Elixir price rise email/posts please contact us for a returns number and we will happily refund you in full." 80/20 Acoustics £14.99 (+16%) Phos Bronze Acoustics £15.99 (+14.6%) Electric Strings £11.95 (+9.5%) Bass Strings £42.95 (+43%) So us low Enders are well f***ed.
Have they looked at the sales of their bass strings and thought "Well, we aren't selling enough of these, best ramp up the price by around half!". Honestly, why would you pay that for a set of perfectly standard strings? Is anyone really that dedicated to any one brand that they would pay double for something that most other brands make for half? It seems like they have essentially priced themselves out of the market.
 24. X is non-existant for me... HURRAY!
 25. I don't make money playing bass, and I have no issue at all with that.
