Surely the upgrade is free.
mmmmnope. You have heard of Apple before, right? I think they don't see it as an upgrade, more of a system overhaul, which is what I want to know - Is it really worth paying an extra £140 for it? Is there really that much difference between it and 9? It certainly looks different, it looks nicer, but I'm not paying £140 for "looks nicer".
Very different approaches to the challenge; I'm dying to know who replaced what instrument. Sounds like some people redid the bassline? And someone seems to have found the original a bit slow! Liking the bold edits. Andy.
A couple definitely redid the bassline, I think. I believe one of the ones with a redone bassline to belong to the man who did the original bass recording on this song. I did wonder though that one seemed to be faster, but I don't think it actually was, I think it just seemed faster, for some odd reason. Maybe I'm wrong, but that was the conclusion I came to.
Ignore the above. One stands out to me as a clear winner.
Aw thanks

There are some cracking mixes in there! I've kind of made a bit of a shortlist in my mind, and I'll have another listen tomorrow afternoon when I can concentrate a bit better on it. Well done everyone

WOOO! The first one is good.
That made me laugh mate. Jeez... it's like a textbook definition of tedious. Watching blue bars slowly creep their way across the screen. One after the other. Relentless. Punishing. For all eternity. So... who fancies being caretaker next month?? [PS: I have a newly-found love of MP3s and their dinky file sizes...]
Last month, there was no issue for me, because I had accidentally uploaded it in MP3 format, with an extra couple of minutes of extra silence at the end (for good luck, obviously), and it took a few minutes. This month, having learned how to make it a WAV file format, it took me about 10 tries to get it uploaded, some taking 40 minutes, before it freezing at the last 3%! I really feel for you if it's anything like that, but considering I struggle enough to upload one track, let alone anywhere between 6 and 12, I think I'll not raise my hand for next month, if that's alright with you?
Dunno, Pro Tools 11 has just been released, so I suppose they have to keep up with the Jonses...
Indeed, not really what I'm interested in though

So I've just seen the latest version of Logic has been released, and it looks very swish. What I want to know is, will updating to it make my mixes, and especially my midi instruments, sound any better? Does it, say, have features in it which actually allow a guitar to sound like a guitar? It is £140, which I suppose is reasonable, but I have only had Logic 9 since January, and I paid £140 for it then, although admittedly, using all the iTunes vouchers that I had saved up from Christmas and my birthday. Anybody know much about this? I've had a bit of a flick through, but with my inexperience, I find it hard to tell whether it's actually better, or just more glitzy or user friendly.
Right, I have sent out our press release to the following publications today. Some are pretty obvious targets, others are a bit in the "yeah, keep dreaming" league, but it doesn't harm us to try anyway. Bass Guitar Magazine (I know they've covered this before, but they may reprise...) Guitar And Bass Magazine FACT Magazine Q Magazine The NME The BBC news website The London Metro and the Scottish Metro The London Evening Standard The Independent The Times The Sun The Express The Mail The Mirror The above are those I was able to find an email address for that accepted news bits and press releases from the public. Some of the quality papers clearly do not want anything to do with whatever the public may wish to send to them, and make it especially difficult for anyone not in the know to discover the correct contact to email. So it's their loss Now, that press release I've written is suitable for any type of newspaper or magazine; as per PR rules, it's just one page of text, it's concise, it contains two embedded photos and two quotes, and it's meant to serve as an appetizer for any journalist who might be interested in covering our story. In that case, the journalist would contact us for more details and original files, and I would pass on the details of those involved and happy to talk to the press. If anyone of you guys has local media contacts they would like to pitch our story to, please feel free to PM me and I'll be happy to send you the PDF document of the press release to forward to them. The more, the merrier, and the higher the exposure. Thank you all for your help and support, and special thanks to James, Milton, Donald, and Peter.
Fantastic! No thanks needed here, Jay, you did all the work on this one
The toms can't be that important; after all aren't they only drums..?
That's why mine disappear half way through the track
-
Yep I got 60% through the drum replacement - still got the toms to do....but I'm never going to do it. I used Audiosnap in Sonar to get the midi timing for all the drum hits, was identifying which hit was which manually and allocating it to the appropriate drum in my kit.....it was a very long tedious process which I am not going to finish. I had replaced the kicks and the snares and the hats, just really had the toms to do....
The toms didn't take me that long actually, although admittedly, I never did finish them
-
I've got mine in. Can't wait to here everyone's mixes Twig, are you far off being finished?
I see! It's a logistical operation right enough. Emma says yes no problem to use Rhino pics
I can hear Silvia furiously hitting the "Send" button on her email app
31 days in July; should be 24th?
How about the actual closing date is the 24th, but we tell everyone the 23rd so that everyone gets them in on the 24th?
Hi guys, This is all going much much better than I ever imagined it would. James
It is! It's exciting, I think! Fantastic that the target has been smashed. We should start taking bets on where we think it will finish, in aid of the relay, of course Onwards and upwards. If the press take it up, goodness knows where it might stop. It could end up in my house having raised £10,000 in the rest of the UK! Here's hoping
Guys and Gals, If the baton is still in Derbyshire by August 9th I'm able to ferry it further south. I've got a weekend down in Kent (Burwash in the Weald area)and I'm happy to take the purple monster down there to pass on to someone else. If it's still with Peter I'll collect if off him beforehand. If it moves on before then, all well and good.
If it's still in Derby by then, hopefully at least it will have played another gig
Guys, if you think Emma will be all right with that, I only have to press Send in a series of emails. I'm sure it's only good publicity for her, but it would be best to have her word. However, we are on a tight schedule because the silly season is well under way, and it's our best opportunity. I can include the qualities and bass magazines in the mailshot - no prob. Shall we say we wait until tomorrow morning?
Sounds like a plan. That's reasonable time for Emma to get back to you or Donny. If she's not back to you by then, I'd agree with Donny and just send it off.
Are you implying I'm a drug dealer. I mean who else drives home from "work" with a bag of ketamine? Edit for smiley face.
No no, you would be going TO work with a bag of ketamine, and coming home with a bag of cash!
-
That is Ace. Sounds totally pro. I listened to it in my car last night driving home from work and my head was really rockin it.
With a bag full of ketamine!

Nice one, Mark! I can see it now, loads of people, chewing the lips off themselves, stomping their foot and punching the air in time to the beat, with lasers and fancy club lights dancing around the club. I really need to get some of those sounds. Not that I'm in to EDM, I just think I could use them on some of my other tracks, like the one I made for this months composition competition. Well done, mate

How does donating to Cancer Research UK help? Well, here's a handy info graphic.
Well done Milty. There's me ringing the bell for last orders, when I still have lots to do on mine... Been too busy with the composition competition (and life in general) and have let this slip. Never mind. I've got enough time tonight to finish what I've started and make a half-decent job of it. Happy to say that the standard of mixes already received has been great. Well done everyone!
I'm just having a listen to mine now to make sure it all sounds OK. Wish I had something respectable to listen to it on, but it sounds pretty good on the laptop speakers, so that must be a good sign! I think I'll just upload it as is. I've done plenty to it, I think, and making it sound better at this point is beyond my capabilities I think
Or.... it's my ear bones finally shredding! lol!
You really need to worry when it's your arms and legs that develop rattles Thanks guys for your input (hehe, puns) so far! I'll give them all a look later in the week. I think I'm going to spend a long time deliberating over what to get!
Just came across some stats:- 1/. According to the National Lottery, the chances of winning the jackpot are 1 in 14 million. ....not very good odds !! 2/. According to Cancer Research UK however , 1 out of 3 people will be diagnosed with cancer at some time in their life. So, that means that potentially either me writing this, you reading this ....or the next person will have to deal with that day. So, if anyone needs a reason for getting involved in the Bass Relay .....lets try and get better odds than 1 in 3 !
Absolutely! That's why I always say - Who wouldn't support it? We all know somebody who has had cancer, or somebody who died from cancer, or we might be unfortunate enough to be the one who has cancer, but this is what CRUK is all about! Find out more about it, and tackle it. I saw the new Cancer Research ad yesterday, and I'm thinking I should share it on Facebook. It has good shock value.
Last orders! Today is your final chance to submit a mix if you haven't already done so. Voting will then commence on Wednesday night (17th) and finish at the end of the month (31st). Get busy
Was working on some final details last night. Just need to do a couple more things, then get everything balanced nicely and that should be it!
If anyone is planning on coming to Cornwall, you could bring down the Baton for me
We are waiting for the next participant to raise their hand. It could be making its way towards Cornwall, who knows?
