1.
No, I do like them. I was trying (badly) to use a different term to indie pop. Pop that appeals to a music-buying audience that aren't kids. Nothing wrong with being a student, by the way... I did four different degrees.
You're quite right, there is nothing at all wrong with being a student. In fact, I wish I was one. It is pop, in the sense that it's popular, and conforms to some of the "rules" of pop, but aside from that I couldn't real consider it pop. I do like that they have a folky sound, and they are very popular. I think folk and country and 2 genres are are coming back into moderate popularity again.
 2.
It's just pop songs written to appeal to students, played on acoustic instruments.
Why do I like them then? It's just this or it's just that - These aren't reasons to like or dislike something. Face it, of you liked them, you wouldn't be saying stupid things like "they are just written to appeal to students". Bollocks! No band is going to pigeonhole themselves like that.
 3.
In my mind a laptop counts as an instrument. Without getting into the realms of the 'what constitutes an instrument' debate, I would suggest that anything you can make a sound with is technically an instrument. I can appreciate a virtuoso violin performance for its feel and technical prowess and I do believe MIDI falls down slightly when attempting to emulate 'real world' instruments... its a dynamics thing, it just doesn't sound quite right... Having said that though. Composing is composing and to me there is no difference whatsoever in writing a piece on a traditional orchestral instrument, or programming notation into a computer... you are still creating music just using a different medium... Rob
Yes, that's quite true. But the concept I had gone for left it quite limited. The bars that go up a semi-tone are the vowels. I just did that to give it some variation. But I think it's pretty cool that if you translated all the notes of the bass to a zero, and all the notes the bass doesn't play to a 1, you literally have a barcode.
 4.
That's not at all bad there mate. Like the concept. You've got more instruments in it than I have!
Does a laptop count as an instrument, because if it doesn't I believe you have beaten me by 1
 5. ...is what I wish we could mix in next month's BC Mix competition, but One of your tracks will suffice Yes, We want tracks that you have recorded. Any genre, any quality. We want to try and keep things local, so if you have a track that you wouldn't mind us using for next month's mix competition, please do send me a PM. Basically, I'll be giving the tracks a cursory listening, because I have much more free time than the competition organisers, and then I'll leave it up to Skol or Simon to choose one for us to use. If we get a lot of interest, it's possible that we might just put the ones we don't use on the shelf for the next month's competition, if that's fine by you. We really do appreciate anybody throwing their name into the hat here. We want to keep it local. At the end of it, you will have several different mixes of your song, and you will be able to choose which one you like best, and we'll have had fun mixing it! So PM me if you have an unmastered track that you want us to use. Thanks. Milton.
 6.
Hello! I'm late to this particular party but will be on the lookout next time around, as practising my mixing would be A Good Thing. My question now relates to this K-14 business... at the moment I have a very primitive setup with Pro Tools SE, which AFAIK doesn't allow the use of any external plugins. Could I work around this by e.g. normalising the mix in Audacity? (I do plan on getting "Proper" Pro Tools at some point...)
Don't know about your query there mate, but it most certainly is not too late to get involved in this one! There's still plenty of time to do something with this mix, so long as you can find a few free hours (an hour a day would likely be enough by the time the competition closes) you could do a mix for it!
 7.
But never say never. Unless it's a Tesco value range lasagne
Or a Findus one In fact, most lasagnes from a shop are disgusting. Needs to be homemade!
 8. Here's mine. Read the description of it to understand it better https://soundcloud.com/miltyg565/miltongrahambasschatbass
 9.
Well, strictly speaking you should listen to reference material with your eyes closed... Bloomin' 'eck, people are getting quick around here! I've only just finished cracking my knuckles in readiness for this month, let alone started sketching anything out. Makes me think we should do a 'speed run' one time - produce a track over a weekend or suchlike; maybe with some sort of fundraising element to it. Would take a bit of organising but might be fun. Might have potential for a Christmas Special, etc. Anyway, well done on the early bird efforts. I'm looking forward to hearing them
What about a collaborative effort between a load of us? Combine all our best skills. I don't mean myself though, because whatever I can do, there's somebody on here who's much better at it... unless it's making a lasagne.
 10. I'm working on my own, currently. Sorry, but it will be a terrible arrangement of Midi instruments. It's all I can do (and I can't even do it very well).
 11.
No, he really really isn't. Lightning Bolt was a brilliant song, if it was all old fashioned rock and roll like that i'd be happy. Dylan never sang in a Nottingham accent. Again, really not even close.
Lies.
 12. The thing I dislike about Jake Bugg is that he is just a replica of Bob Dylan. Even down to how he sings, and the old style recording sound that Dylan had. Why bother? Sure, have Dylan as an influence, but why be an exact imitation?
 13.
I'd never heard of them before I watched the coverage & I have to say I loved their set. People seem to forget that Glastonbury is a huge party, it may have a professional stage set up at one end but the punters are there to sing, dance, drink, laugh & have the time of their lives with their best mates. you may see a gig that looks & sounds crap on TV but is fantastic to be there. Munford & sons was one of them gigs. It probably looked & sounded not so great but after being a Glastonbury regular I knew they would go down really well. Last night my mate rang me as he'd just got back (He stayed for the after party that happens every year) and I asked him about Munford & son's, he told me that being in the crowd was a massive dancing knees up, people jigged, linked arms jumped around, laughed & played silly buggers all the way through their set. he said it was by far the best fun he'd ever had in front of the pyramid stage in all the years he'd been going. Some people will always see something different to what the people there are seeing & hearing. which is the real shame of the Glastonbury coverage. I did love their set, I admit I would not buy their music, but so what ? music is fun & to get joy out of music is the most amazing thing in the world, without that feeling of joy I would never bother making & listening to music anymore. because without that feeling of joy & surprise what is the point ? If people hate/strongly dislike this band then fine, but why bitch about them for being offered & accepting the biggest gig of their lives ? If someone offered me this opportunity I would snap their hand off because that gig will stay with them for the rest of their lives....hats off to them because they did their best with what they had. God bless not only Glastonbury but god bless new music & the joy it brings.
Quite right, Fumps, Quite right!
 14.
That's great, but I was hoping for a bit more than that. Although perhaps I should have foreseen it, I wasn't intending to start a hate thread (others have taken that upon themselves). All I wanted was a bit of perspective on what appeals to millions on both sides of the Atlantic who clearly love them. I haven't made any personal criticism of them or their music, other than referencing Charlie Brooker's caustic wit, which is his stock-in-trade, after all. I can generally define what it is about the music I love that does it, but although they're not the first, M&S genuinely puzzle me - it just seems a bit too simplistic to put it down to 'taste'. You say you like folksy music, OK, what about it exactly? Can you be more precise?
That is why I like them. I like their music. I like folk and folkesque kinds of music. There's no way I could explain exactly WHY I like them, beyond what I have already said. Of course, explaining why you don't like something is a lot easier, I find.
 15.
So that's my advice mate. Listen to Britney!
You used to be cool, man! What happened to you, man!? I agree with you. I've often said the best thing about pop is the level of production it has. I'm a complete novice, and even I noticed that, and quite some time ago too. Personally, I struggle to produce something that even I would be happy with I've written one kind of chorusey hook, but I need to match it with a verse. But that's all waffle really, because it has naff all to do with this comp
 16.
Despite being in my 6th decade on this little rock, I still try and stay informed about the latest trends and musical fashions, and I've heard the above mentioned talked about a lot, but I've never really given them a chance, so I sat down and watched at least 20 minutes of their Glastonbury Festival performance tonight. Despite being a little older, I'm not uneducated musically, and I've always considered my tastes to be pretty catholic, but try as I might, I just don't get it. Even my dear lady wife, who's not especially musical bless 'er, looked up from her copy of Sporting Life and commented "All the songs sounds the same - and I haven't heard one I can remember." So could someone please enlighten me as to what it is that so many find commendable, memorable, edifying or uplifting about them. I must admit I'm veering towards agreeing with Charlie Brooker's somewhat uncharitable but perhaps not completely inaccurate appraisal of them, quoted elsewhere on here, as "Trust Fund Wurzels". They are posh boys from Wimbledon, I suppose. It was nice to see bassist Ted Dwayne looking hale and hearty after his recent health scare, though. He was having a great time. Y'see, I'm not completely heartless.
I just like the music. That's all that matters. If you don't, fair enough, I'll not question that. I like quite folksy music.
 17. I've had a fairly conceptual idea for this composition, given the technologicalness of a place like New York.
 18.
Has anyone actually read the blurb?
Me...
 19.
Those are a superb effort, on a similar note. The day you don't win this competition Hull will freeze over.... Rob
There it is! But yeah, Skol, give us a chance.
 20.
All theory is relevant to guitar or bass...
Of course, but what I mean is, I don't really know how to form chords on a Piano, or how to arrange things best, or the dynamics that other instruments are capable of. I'm really a massive novice in all respects.
 21.
I don't think anybody in their right mind would be running TOWARDS Hull... Anyway I've gone off waffling again on the competition thread haven't I... I'll shut up now. nearly home time! Rob
Can't wait to hear/see? your next entry, Rob! I'm trying to create my own composition this month, but being pretty much limited to midi instruments and also being an absolute beginner at programming midi instruments, and know very little theory other than what's relevant to guitar or bass, this make take a long long time, and still sound absolutely crap. Also, most the midi instruments just sound like a piano that sounds a bit like a bass, or a guitar. They don't actually ever sound like a bass or a guitar.
 22.
When I was about 13 some of my mates were in a Pantera tribute band call 'Cowboys from Hull'
I feel like there should be an iron main cover band that sings "Run to the Hull".
 23.
I've never had the pleasure of visiting Neath. I understand it's still horse and cart over those parts though? I have however visited Hull many times throughout my youth... I still shudder now thinking about it... Rob
Holidays from Hull!
 24. I've got a few ideas for this one. I'll wait until you are well into your own compositions before I reveal anything though
 25.
I give mine the thumbs up
Hey! That's a guitar! You can't be in here with that! Get out!
