which idiot has broken his left wrist? :(
MiltyG565 replied to stingrayPete1977's topic in General Discussion
smashed broken and mangled or just worn out over time its all the same and ruins our bass playing! Hope it fixes soon Samashton. I dont think it has failed as such Milty, it may have been that far through when they did it or maybe the bone has shrunk back a few mm after the healing, either way its defo poking the sharp end out at 45 degrees into the wrist joint. I was happy enough to leave the plate in but it does cause me trouble as I can feel the tendons running over it and it hurts when the humidity changes in either direction so even if the screw is not causing all my problems it should solve some of them. How's the leg anyway?
So it's actually fine as it is then? I could imagine it's quite uncomfortable. Well I've kinda just spent the last 3 days phoning doctors, and earlier today, I went back to the hospital to get a surgeon's opinion on the situation. There's an infection in the leg, along with a collection of various fluids, so it's very swollen, and very sore. But anyway, this is your thread -
You just paste the link in... that's what I did anyway Its usually end of the month for the deadline so ages to go yet... I just tend to do mine in a couple of hours and get it in early lest I get drunk and forget later on in the month.... Rob
Same here. Mine was pretty simple given the limited concept that I had to work with, and I made it all in about 2 hours. I'm sure there are a lot of things I could have done better with it, but as one of my first attempts at creating a song using midi instruments, I think it's alright for 2 hours work. Although if I needed to spend more time on it, I would have. But I often find that good ideas either come to me, or don't (usually they don't), so when I know what I'm aiming for, it could be done in 2 hours. If I hadn't a clue what I was trying to achieve, it could have taken days.
Broken right hand on Monday night! Family troubles man, i snapped and punched a wall. In a splint and fingers taped up. Get well soon!
That's not nice, but I think pete's is a little more serious than that. All the best with getting your hand healed up though -

Total bummer, Pete! what was the reason that it failed? -
Yeah, when I say valve amp, I mean proper valve amp with output transformer. Edit, I'm not implying that your amp is improper :-) it's just when people say valve amp, they tend to mean all valve
Yeah, I know what you mean

Basschat Competition Bass (13 Guitar Co.) - CONCLUSION!
MiltyG565 replied to Skol303's topic in Build Diaries
More pics! Paul has now planed, glued and re-planed the neck, as well as the body. Pickups have been ordered - hardware and truss rods to follow. The next step is to cut the headstock, do the various routing, affix the fretboard and other shiz... I'll keep y'all updated as it happens. Very exciting ^ It's a beauty!
Fantastic grain on the wenge there! -
Yeah that's true. It's going to be difficult to cut it out to make it in time I think.
Just cut out the bit where he says "That's very out of time". Everything else is fine. He redoes it again right after that anyway, so just delete the out of time part.
This is definitelty a track where that would be worth considering. I'm a pedant for using only the source material in these challanges ...and so far I've got a reasonably good sound out of the drums by creating three separate tracks (one for snare, one for hats, one for 'room') and EQ'ing the living daylights out of them, along with the separate kick track. Some aggressive gating has helped too. I sadly don't have much time to spend on it this month - trying to snatch opportunities to work on it here and there - so my entry is going to be fairly rough around the edges. If I could free up more time I might consider re-writing the drums, but it's not going to happen, so I'm having to 'make do and mend'. Still, so far so good...
I would love to have used the original drum track, but unfortunately I don't know my way around a DAW like you do, and I just couldn't get a decent sound, so I converted it to midi. The midi drums, well, they don't sound the best, but at least I can turn down that bloody annoying ride cymbal now!
[sup] [/sup] [sup]You'll be fine with the LM3 - From the MB website: "any Markbass amp can be used as a preamp only. We recommend that when doing so, you turn off the master volume (not essential, but it's better for the amp). The gain control and/or the Line Out level control will regulate the output from the amp" [/sup] [sup]Whatever you do, don't try it with a valve amp![/sup]
I did it with my valve preamp Ashdown head. I assume it's fine to do it with a valve preamp.
-
As there's a bit nearer the end where they go out of time and you hear the vocalist say so. May have to cut that bit out.
Yeah, it's just him that's out of time there I think. I deleted that segment... not a very good ad-lib!

Ah, a never dying thread. lovely!
Just wondering... If you have a amp head with a DI out, do you still have to have a speaker cab? The reason I ask is because I use a MarkBass LM3 head and I have a cab that I take to gigs which is essentially just used as a monitor, and it tends to cause feedback with my singer's acoustic guitar.
Any experience that I've ever had with DIing from a head or a combo is that the speakers will still be active when you plug the DI lead in. It doesn't defeat the speakers, it just sends the signal out the output as well as to the speakers. Hope I answered your question (of course, if you want to run an amp head without a cab, and DI it, that's fine too).
I like New York. It's big, brash and loud. It's edgy. It's tribal. It's relentless. You can end up somewhere you didn't expect... and like it. I hope I've captured at least some of these aspects in this short piece. https://soundcloud.com/mark-68-2/nyny I thank you!
Fantastic, Mark! You have to tell me where you get all those sounds from!
Had a crack at this today. I have no idea what I'm going to do about the drums though.. May just leave as is.
You've still got time to redo the drums if you want! I converted mine to midi. I've spent a lot of time on the drums, and it's not even done yet!
^ Exactly (I'm pointing to Twig's comment above). Think of it as just a way of setting the peak level of a track. That might be increasing its volume to 0db, or it might be reducing its volume to -20db, or whatever you choose as being your 'norm'.
Right, so why can't it be set to -14 then for the purposes of this comp?
-
No. To put it another way, it raises the volume of the peaks to 0db (or whatever level you set it to) and raises the volume of everything else proportionally by the same out. So it's still the same waveform at the end of the process - it's just louder (or 'taller' in appearance). The process you're describing is what a compressor does - although a compressor works by reducing the difference in volume between the loudest and quietest signals by reducing ('compressing') the peaks. This is why most compressors have a 'make up gain' dial to compensate for the drop in overall volume when the peaks get squashed. PS: don't worry mate... It took me a while to get my head around all this too
so a normaliser is actually just a make-louder-iser?
-
So normalising, Does it bring the level of the main body of the song up to the level of the peaks of the song?
Some of this debate reminds me of discussions I had many years ago with people in the country music community about the soi-disant New Country format. Oh, spawn of the devil, it was. Not real country at all. Your station should be playing more Gene Autry / Bob Wills / Carter Family. You're letting the side down. Even sent death threats and - on one occasion - a turd in a box, just because we didn't play the 'right' artists. Well, that was all bollocks, because the limited toehold country had on the market was proof positive that normal punters weren't ready for the hard stuff. You had to coax them in with something a bit pappy and - once they'd overcome their natural distaste for the entire genre - they'd fan out to discover all the other artists and songs. And it worked, because after a year or so we started getting requests for Lefty Frizzell or George Jones or (God forbid) Lloyd Morgan from 18 year-olds. Thing was, the hard-core country fans didn't like what we were doing because it didn't gel with their idea of what the genre should be about. Bands such as The Mumfords may not fit their genre template, but they're a damn good way of growing the market for the music. Trouble is, existing fans don't always make the connection, see the benefit and take advantage of the opportunity to ship in some new blood. 'If you like that, you might like this' would be the way forward to my mind. Were I a folkie, I'd be sending the Mumfords a thank-you note and a box of delicious gingerbread. .
You'd likely be sending them some goose eggs, or a piece of ham That's very interesting actually. I've always quite liked folk and folkesque type music. It wasn't really a leap anywhere for me to listen to Mumford and Sons. Did you used to work in a radio station or something Skank?
Probably both, but its a risk I'm prepared to take to defend my beardy honour!
I wish I had beardy honour. The best I can manage is a light silhouette that I think loots a bit silly, and I shave it off before it gets a chance to actually take shape.
Sorry didn't see yours as I was scanning through, just had a listen I like it very laid back and techno industrial feel ish Goes with the picture well. You guys are really fast still had no ideas with this one yet
Thanks Mine is nothing special. When you base it around a code, and assign a note to a zero, and a space to a 1, a consonant to an E and a vowel to an F, it's really quite simple. The other guys have had genuine musical ideas that they have created themselves. I've just followed a pattern, but I do think that's the whole point of mine. I like the other compositions too
Desist at once, or I'll rub my hairy chin on your face until it's red and itchy!
Until yours is red and itchy, or the other party's?
There can definitely be lyrics/vocals, it's just most of us can't sing so we tend to get more instrumentals, we had quite a few with vocals last month though. Got an idea in motion, I'm getting my Aphex Twin on, dark glitchy electronic vibes going on, although I've been listening to a lot of Cardiacs today, so that might sneak in there a bit, which would be interesting.
Mine is quite glitchy electronic type thing.
I like it Milty. No one has any lyrics in their pieces. Can there be lyrics? Are there rules? What's the deal? I have a chorus in my head for this picture.
Of course there can be lyrics! I just had no means of recording any lyrics, and I think it would really have detracted from the whole binary robotic theme if it had lyrics. Thanks for listening though The rules are in the very first comment on this thread. Basically, compose a song based on what the picture makes you feel. Just be careful not to infringe on any copyrighted material It can be whatever you want it to be! That's the glory of it!
the hype about how they're somehow the future of folk comes mostly from journalists.
Doesn't it always? I don't buy into any of the hype really. I listen to albums that I think I'll like, and then decide whether I like them, and/or the band. As a rule, I don't generally like Deathcore, but I like some of the bands in the genre, because they have genuinely talented members, but I just think they are wasted playing that genre.
It amazes me why so many of the above posts feel the need to use words such as 'crap' 'hate' and 'sh**te'. They are only a band that have found some success. Whether you like what they do or not, shouldn't we be a little happy for any LIVE BAND that PLAYS LIVE and SINGS LIVE with NO CLICK (well not the last time I saw them) that finds worldwide success in these days of computer wizardry! I am not a Mumford fan by the way.

For me Mumford are one of those bands that belong in the category defined by well intentioned people starting off a sentence with 'you'll like this, it's folk music'. They're undeniably good at what they do, it's just that 'what they do' isn't quite my cup of tea...
Quite right, except I do like them
Just listened to Rob's and Dad's tracks, like them both, nice one guys
Soo... you haven't listened to mine then? Right, I see how it is...
