So some of you are saying absolutely DON'T spend money on plugins at this stage, some are saying do. Personally, I would buy a few if I felt I needed them right now. I don't but I am looking more information about them for future reference, because I likely will buy some in the future. Logic doesn't have printed manuals anymore. In fact, you need to find them and download them, they aren't even part of the original download! Although, I don't see why they would print manuals considering they don't even create hard copies of the DAW anymore (stopped it last year, I believe). I'll be getting something decent to mix with as soon as the budget allows. It would be far too easy for me to spend loads of money on this stuff, but I kind of don't like to at the minute, because that's not what my money is for. I know that because it's new that doesn't make it better. I was wondering if it IS better, not because it's new, but because it's better, and the answer seems to be - no, not really. I don wonder though if you can download the bass amp and drum plugins for 10 and install them in 9? That would be handy.
Sorry, lost in translation. Could you expand on 'EDM', please, for the littl'uns amongst us..?
Electronical danceable music.
-
I would like to make a point. I'm quite interested to be thrown into the deep end next month with some EDM, or something similar. I don't reckon I could do anything fantastic, but I think it would be a great learning curve. And like Forrest Gump, that's all I have to say about that.
Using help and Googling tutorials is valid, too. What I'm trying to say is, there are no shortcuts to this. If you want to get your ideas across really quick and without learning the software then you need to hire someone to do it for you.
I'm not looking for a shortcut, I just find looking for tutorials annoying to say the least. It kind of ties in with my idea of doing reviews on products in 80 seconds. I don't want flim-flam, I want the information, and I want to put it to use.
I have no preference, so I'm fine with D'Addario (I use their Chromes on my 5ers too!). How urgent is a change of strings? If we could hold it for a few more days, here's hoping we might hear from someone in the press and see the relay suddenly become more bankable?
Maybe, but I'm happy enough to supply a few sets for now.
Fiddling about is the only way to do it. I've been fiddling with my DAW for six years now (fnarr). It's like life... the more you learn, the more you realise you can't possibly know everything!
But as the example given above, I never would have learned how to time stretch a piece of audio if it weren't for looking for a tutorial. Fiddling about wouldn't have gotten me there.
Hi Milty I guess the newer version is essentially the same as the 9 with some tricky bits added to keep it current. I do t think you should change.
This was my initial thoughts on it. Thanks
Ha. I see an opportunity there, if not with Rotosound, with another string maker (such as? Suggestions, please!). Now, if only someone, anyone from the press I contacted got in touch, we could mention that to the potential sponsor and whet their appetite somewhat... Incidentally, I received a few automated replies to my mailshot, and the gist of them is that papers receive literally thousands of press releases every day and sifting through them takes time. So we better not hold our collective breath. But I'm still hopeful.
I did want to try and get D'Addario on board, but I think James wanted to keep things local, so Rotosound was really the only choice there, but if they aren't going to sponsor it, I suppose all bets are off, and D'Addario are worth a shot? I've talked with D'Addario before, and they are very friendly.
-
But I reckon I could get a good price on a couple of sets of strings from my mate anyway. I reckon a set of standard D'Addario's would be fine for it, but if everyone hates D'Addario strings, obviously there's not much point getting them.
-
So who are the sponsors here? Do we have a strings company among them?
As far as I know, no, there aren't. The sponsors are Ashdown and KaBL. James was trying to get Rotosound on board, but I don't think they ever actually sent anything.
-
If the bass needs strings, I'd like to buy a set for it. What strings does everyone like?
This Logic Pro X seems a very underwhelming update I have to say, although I'm going on reviews and previews so I'll reserve proper judgement. Seems highly cosmetic for the most part, and the most crazy thing is it will not run on any system below 10.8.4 which was released a few weeks ago! Are Apple for real?! Most instruments seem to have remained the same, a few add ons. Some things like the arrpegiator are very welcome, but really these should have been there ages ago and are standard in other apps.
This is exactly what I thought! When I read that they had added an arpeggiator, I thought "Big deal? The midi keyboard I bought for £40 even has an arpeggiator.". I think the new bass amp and drum kits look good though. The drum kit looks like EZ drummer, I think, from what I have seen of both of them, and I know that's a well respected plugin.
Irony
My point is you called me patronising and then you write something like that. But I'm not going to get into an argument about who's more patronising.
we will agree to differ on this , but I find the learning process a big part of the fun , investigating and pinning something down is what makes it stick , its what helps you to understand the topic and how everything comes together , you do it your way , but in answer to your question ...
Yeah, of course it is. I could spend all day fiddling with Logic, and finding stuff out, but when it comes to the mix comp, you can't find out everything you need to by fiddling about, and frankly, I doubt that I ever would learn all I need to by doing that. Tutorials are great, but sometimes finding that one that I need can be difficult. I've seen 18 minute long tutorials and all I was looking for was how to time stretch a piece of audio, something which I now know is very simple, and does not take 18 minutes to explain, unless you stop to make a cup of tea during the explanation. That's where the tedium is, not with the actually learning or using the software.
Sorry , I was being a bit facetious really. after all you start a thread asking for opinions on a software upgrade , get loads of quality advice , give out plenty of encouraging feedback , and finish with a shoulder shrug to intimate that you can't be blessed with the learning process of what you already have !!
Because I want a teacher who knows this stuff already? I can be bothered with learning, but you try looking up a tutorial for everything you want to do and tell me that it isn't tedious.
My advice , is don't upgrade , don't even think of adding anything else until you can use what you have got . Skol already told you that, you then told him you understood and in the next few words you showed that you missed the point totally . Learn to use what you have got , read the books and tutorials, the you tube tutorials make learning so easy it is untrue., BUT if you don't want to learn it, don't. but you wont learn anything if you don't listen to those that are trying to help you, the first lesson in this discipline is learning to listen
Mate, you called me patronising the other day. I know how to listen. Skol and I have talked about stuff like this before, and I respect his advice. I respect anybody's advice, because I'm a complete novice. Don't think that because I write that I was considering buying the latest version IF it was good enough to warrant it and being told to work with what I have that I haven't heeded to advice - I have.

...I'm funnier than even I think I am, apparently. And ain't nobody think I'm funnier than me.
I'm with BRX and Garry on this... It's always best to learn how to use the tools you already have, squeeze every ounce of sound out of them (so to speak) and THEN go splashing out on plug-ins and upgrades once you know exactly what it is you really need. As I've said before, the software I use, Reason, was a 'closed environment' until very recently. This meant I only had its built-in tools at my disposal... and consequently I got to understand them well. It also helped me to learn about sound synthesis and signal chains, as I couldn't just buy a plug-in if I wanted a particular sound - I had to learn how to create it from scratch with what I had available. This experience proved invaluable in helping me better understand the ins and outs of music production. Reason has since opened its doors to 3rd party plug-ins, and I've since spent money snapping up plenty of them... But it's been money well spent, because I have a good understanding of what I'm looking for. Milty: my advice would be to take your time and not try to 'jump the gun' There is a technical side to music production that can only be learned through practice - there's no shortcut - and I'm still very much learning myself! Gradually, the techy stuff starts to become second nature, which leaves room for more creativity and 'fun' in general. But it doesn't happen overnight. Andy Barlow from Lamb once said that learning how to produce music is like learning a new language - it takes about the same amount of time to become 'fluent'. So don't rush it and 'enjoy the journey', corny as that expression always is. Your recent mixes and compositions on Basschat are steadily improving each time, so just keep on plugging at it mate! Rather than plug-in at it! Yeah, that's a terrible pun. I'll get me coat...
I understand what you mean, and believe me, a lot of my days now are being spent in Logic, but I was just wondering about the new version. Regardless of whether it's good or not, I'm not likely to buy it any time soon anyway. What I would really like though is somebody to teach me how to do all the things I want to in Logic. Trying to figure it out myself or constantly looking for tutorials online is a tedious task.
LOL You crack me up. Ill bet if you write to apple telling them of your disappointment at finding out there is a new version out only months after purchasing your app, plus add in a few details of your recent past under the surgeons knife they would be more than happy to sort you out with the latest version. I'm very familiar with apple and their products and always found them very helpful. Also inform them of how long you had waited to buy this app because you were saving up your coupons/vouchers. Give it a go. Start a new topic and let us know how you get on. You have the time.......
Haha, I doubt that would actually work. Good thought though
Which is why IMO you should concentrate on learning how to get the best out of the tools you already have, rather than expecting a software upgrade to magically make your recordings sound better.
I don't think it will magically make my mixes sound better, I wanted to know if it was better. If the midi instruments are better, and if it's more user friendly, not if it just magically makes my music better.
I think you will be I think you will be a LOT I think none of you are going to have social lives next month mwahahahaha
There's a prize. Might as well just hand it over to Skol now.
A good engineer will be able to make the best use out of the tools available. Sure 3rd party plugins might sound "better" (which is entirely subjective anyway), but an in-depth understanding of how the bundled plugins in Logic work will help you to make more informed decisions about which 3rd party plugins might suit you. Ultimately they aren't really "better" just different. Technically better doesn't automatically mean musically better. Since recording began, fantastic sound records have been made with equipment that would have been considered low quality and primitive at the time let alone compared to modern studios. The great recordings with this so called primitive gear have all been done by people who knew every aspect of it and how to get the best out of it. IMO there is no substitute for knowing inside out the tools that you already have, and then using your ears to make great sounding recordings.
Of course, but I am in no way an expert on any of this, and I'm not likely to be one any time soon.
I think the logic x will be good but... as i found with logic 9 if you want GOOD sounds / mixing tools you have to spend money on third party software such as WAVES plugins / native instruments / some independent synthesizers etc as the plugins provided in logic sound quality wise are poor. Unless this changes with Logic x the only real difference between logic 9 and X will be the extra little bangs and whistles such as the Flex pitch.
That's what I think too. Space designer I think is a good reverb tool, but all the rest just sound... processed, and it's pretty much the same with everything else, unfortunately.
-
Oh, you can control Logic with an iPad now, which is cool. It's unnecessary, but it's cool.
Just had a look through the description on apple.com and there's loads of new stuff. Flex pitch looks incredible (although hard to know for sure until you use it; I've never really got to grips with flextime). The new drum samples sound a big step up, and the bass amp modeller looks improved too. Looks like a very different set up to 9, but they seem to have made it more intuitive. Can't help thinking its going to eat up RAM, but it'll be fine when I've saved up for the new Mac Pro as well (!)
I thought that, but I don't have much use for a pitch corrector. I'll not be having many vocals recorded, and when I do, if there's a slip up, there's a slip up. I'll either record it again, or leave it in. (Or tell everyone that's what I do ... ) Eating the RAM is a good point. I got this with 8GB, and have a few games, and Logic on it. Don't know what it will run like with Logic Pro 10 on it.
