Is there a picture/video on this thread? I can't see any links or anything embedded
Same.
This is my attempt then for July first time submitted a piece to this competition hope you enjoy bad feed back just as welcomed as good as I am always looking to improve my writing, mixing skills and playing
https://soundcloud.com/flashg-4/city-lights
Feel a bit nervous
This is really good mate! At the start, it sounds very grand, and then when the percussion comes in, you know it's more of a modern kind of grand, and then it comes in properly with the synths and bass drum, and it puts me in the mind of some kind of posh club, where it's not all snobs, but it's not all rave chavs either, if that makes sense? A very New York kind of place. Well done!
Just finished... phew. I've been collaborating with Rob (RockfordStone) this month on an alt-rock/nu metal track. Rob's music normally has a really great 'stadium' feel to it, so I wanted to draw on that and aim for something akin to the Deftones in terms of heaviness. Well, sort of. The idea was to capture the darker side of a big city like New York; the territorial conflicts that take place. Especially in a place like NYC, which has been fought over by different gangs throughout history (yeah, I've seen The Warriors! ). Hence the title, 'Empire City'. Have a listen and let us know what you think: https://soundcloud.c...lob/empire-city It's mixed on headphones (as always with me), so feedback on the production itself is gratefully received. And cheers to everyone who's taken part this month. We've had a good turnout of old hands and new faces, which is great. I'm looking forward to listening through them all!
Mine is better... I think you should take a break and let the dullards (me) win Honestly though, great track! Love that meaty bass sound and the whole vibe of the thing. Without even reading your post, I was immediately thinking of the grungey back-street gangs and the kind of mischief they get up to. It serves it's purpose well! Well done Paul and Rob!
^ Cool. Keep us updated mate. If they don't get back in time for the next one, then we can always keep their track 'in the bank' for the one after.
Absolutely! And I can't volunteer to oversee things this month. It's just taken me all night to upload a 3 minute video!
Nice one Milty! The more people get interested in this, the better Is there a rough mix of the track already available? If so please post a link so we can have a listen and get everyone's opinion on it for the next challenge. Speaking of which, I'll need to hand over responsibility of running the next one to someone else (August is going to be crazy busy at work!)... although I'm very happy to muck in again after that. So... any takers??
I don't know yet. He should get back to me, then we'll have a listen. I don't know if they've had any mixing done yet, but we'll see.

A mate of mine is recording tracks with his band currently, and I've just asked if they want to let us use a track for the comp next month. He's making not promises, but he said he'll have a talk with the other guys. But if we mix their song, and there's one in particular they like and want to use, would everyone be OK to let them use it if they are kind enough to let us use their song for next month's comp?
-
well been back and fourth, and have no idear on the tec side of mixing,I voted for what I liked to hear, hope thats ok hehe just call me Mr Thicky
That's the idea mate! You choose the one you would most like to hear on the radio!
-
This looks like a really cool feature. I don't know how to do this in Logic 9 yet, but I'm sure there's a way. What I want though is for it to consolidate all my tracks down into 1 track, to make mixing easier. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcY10gWKK-I

Personally, there are a couple there that I would never have voted for, but people have voted for them. I think there's a real divide with this one. It seems more fragmented. Usually there are 3 or 4 that do well, but there's 2 doing well, and 4 with 1 vote. I got a vote, and it wasn't even my vote, which makes me happy! Somebody liked my mix!

Basschat Competition Bass (13 Guitar Co.) - CONCLUSION!

It's taking shape! That's a magnificent fretboard! -
Cuts down the noise from the screaming around you, though, doesn't it..?
No, the only thing that stopped that was the source of the screaming being exiled.
Those who did both, of course, are really crazy..!
Hey! Just because the room I live in has padded walls doesn't mean I'm crazy!

I voted! and it turns out somebody voted for my mix!
This is a tricky on for me this month , My favourite piece is hardly a mix, it seems almost a re-recording , some of the best of the others have left in bits that I would have thought were first for the chop, those that didn't do that then seemed to have lost the drums , or sped the song up a touch. dilemmas , dilemmas.
This is exactly what I'm thinking. Some of them are done really well though. I've not had a listen in a couple of days, so I'm going to listen again now and try and pick the one I like best. Since uploading the mix, I've decided to try and mix it from scratch again, and I've only got the bass track done and already it sounds better than my last one!
I've already PM'd this to Milty, but this is the one that'd caught my eye... Rhythm Guitar (RG) by Rob Papen. Not something I'd invest in myself - I'd rather work with a real guitarist than try to rely on emulation - but out of all the various guitar sims, this one captures my the attention the most. But then I'm a huge fan of Papen's stuff
Yup, I was impressed with this, but I have a bone to pick with you! That book you recommended to me - I was up all night reading it and messing about in Logic, then didn't fall asleep until 5am.
This might tickle your fancy [and there are other compaines doing pretty much the same thing - cheaper as well] http://www.musiclab.com/ http://www.musiclab....trat/audio.html
Thanks for that, but Skol beat you to it, I'm afraid
Not sure how much Guitar you play, but combining even a little bit of real Guitar with some programmed Guitar, will blend into a mix in a reasonably realistic way.
I've written entire songs. And they will be recorded when I can. But I can't do anything like that right now, and I want to be able to make guitar sounds.
-
There are quite a few.... Acoustic gtr, Strats, Metal, power chords, Telecasters.... Pick, strum, scrapes, up & downs etc...and most of them are very good, and with minimal programming or playing. Key strokes for changing the articulations.
But there isn't one in Logic.
-
IMO making a virtual guitar instrument sound good is all about the playing and programming, not the sound itself. You need to think like a guitarist or it will never sound right no matter how "realistic" the sounds themselves are. The easiest way to do this is the use a guitar with a MIDI pickup to program the parts, but if you can do that then you might as well record the actual guitar sound itself.
Exactly! For one, the guitar sounds in Logic aren't great to start with, but there's no programmable guitar plugin, that would allow you to programme strumming patterns, muted strums/picks, pick attack, chord progressions. That's why I would want the plugin for that. Also, my skill level, disablement and lack of recording gear all play against me in the "record it yourself" thing, otherwise I would.
Not sure if you've seen this yet...... Last few lines are very funny
Haaa! Logic Pro 9 was reduced? What price was it on release? £140 is what I paid in January. The new Logic Pro X is £140 too. Apparently, it was boasted than Logic Pro 9 users could upgrade to Logic Pro X for £140... so... upgrade to it for exactly what it costs to buy then? Ah right...
-
What do you mean? A guitar amp sim or an actual virtual guitar instrument?
Guitar instrument. The amp plugins are fine, although not fantastic.
-
Absolutely...until you have to upgrade because you want some increased functionality or plug-in that you can't install on your set-up, or your files become incompatible with other systems. I had a recording session at a mate's at the weekend and he's still using Logic 5 on Win XP - absolutely no issues and of course I can seamlessly open the song on LP9 on the Mac to correct our er...'interesting' chops. (although my awful fretless intonation is a challenge to fix in the mix). To be honest I really detest the whole upgrade culture that we have - phones, cars, furniture etc. Basses are (natch) different though.
The thing about upgrading all those other things is that there's an element of waste to them. Neither Logic 9 or Logic 10 have any amount of waste to them, because they are completely digital. I don't like the whole "This is 3 years old, it's ancient! WE MUST GET A NEW ONE!" thing either, and Apple only drive the mentality further (by releasing new OSs, phones, iPods and various other things on a yearly basis), but if Logic 10 was really good enough to warrant the extra £140, I would consider it. At the minute though, I'm not really considering it too much.
you need to know why you are buying 3rd party plugins, and if you don't know logic very well how can you decide? so i would definitely suggest not buying any plugins, unless for example you know you want the best piano sound money can buy and you can already tell you won't be satisfied with the Logic VIs. there is definitely no need to buy compressors, delays, phasers etc initially.
Absolutely! I'm trying to find a good guitar plugin! Logic's guitars are really poor, I think.
