1. Pardon me if I sound like an idiot, but is the split shaft that important? If it is, what's you stop you sawing a split into it yourself?
 2. I thought you tried to sort feedback at the PA desk?
 3.
I like the Clangers, the Soup Dragon was an evil git though!
Is your avatar a clanger?
 4.
Warwick, the sound of a great big gaping hole in the wood...... Sorry Guy, but this bass is a pr@tt.
How does a hole sound on an electric bass?
 5.
A quick update: I've just been sent the stems for the next mixing challenge. I'm going to check them out tonight after work and assuming all's well, I'll set up a new thread for the next challenge later this evening. It's going to be 'back to basics' this time... no big studio stems, just some good honest DIY recording and all the challenges that go with it Watch this space... [not literally, I mean go do something useful in the meantime]
Cool! Hopefully I can land on the moon before you get the thread up... That wasn't a joke...
 6. I don't do things for respect; I do things because I feel I should. Thanks though
 7. Done http://miltong565.wordpress.com/2013/06/16/help-the-world-from-your-armchair/
 8.
...which I've seen, and can recommend. Well written, well illustrated; nice work. Well done, that man...
You really think so? Thanks! They don't get that much attention, unfortunately.
 9.
Eh..? I've not seen those ones..!
How did I know you'd be along to make fun of that part? Well, I've gotten sidetracked and started writing another blog post
 10. Making a promotional video. God this is hard work. My videos are easy, I just talk and cut out the bits where i stop making sense, this, however... totally different ball game...
 11.
Nothing. I wanted to be in a band with my mates and the bass was the only instrument left.
That's one reason, so it's not exactly "nothing"
 12.
Well, I suppose Warwick approached him and said 'Excuse me, Mr Pratt, can we build you a sig bass?' and he said 'That would be nice, thank you' and they said 'Do you have any ideas and he said 'Not really, but here's a picture of the bass I'm best known for playing, could you just copy that?' and they said 'That's a Fender' and he said 'Yes. Yes it is. What's the problem?' and they said 'But we're Warwick. Sound of wood, you know' and he said 'Would I know what?' and they said 'That's our motto' and he said 'What? "Would you know?" is your motto?' and they said 'Look, don't worry about that, we'll explain when we see you' and he said 'OK, when are we going to meet?' and they said 'How about next Tuesday?' and he said 'Sorry, Tuesday's not good for me' and they said 'OK, how about the Tuesday after that?' and he said 'Fine. Goodbye' and they said 'Goodbye' and then they met up two weeks later and he said 'About this sig bass. Are you sure I can't have one that looks like my Fender?' and they said 'No, it'll have to look like a Warwick' and he said 'Well, I don't want one that looks like a normal Warwick, you know the ones with the funny upper horn' and they said 'That's OK, we've got lots of other shapes. Have a look at this picture of this one.' and he said 'Yes. Yes, I like that a lot. Could you do it with two sliding pickups on a rail?' and they said 'Are you sure?' and he said 'Yes, I am. I quite fancy a bass with two sliding pickups' and they said 'Are you sure you want to have two, because if you only had one we could do a little sliding cover to hide the hole, but if you have two, we won't be able to hide the hole' and he said 'No, that's OK. The only people who will notice will be those silly c**ts on BassChat and who cares what they think?' .
Haha! I wouldn't be surprised if he actually DID say something like that.
This place is so funny!
Yup
 13.
There is no plan for it to go anywhere , it goes to where-ever there is someone who wants to get involved , the collection and handover logistics are just taken as part of the deal, and it travels accordingly, it started off down south , but the take up seemed slow and it made its way northward , the southern bass community need to raise their game somewhat , The Portsmouth contingent duly excepted
Absolutely, but just wait until it get's to NI; The southern bass community will seem like a hive of activity in comparison! Anyway, Steve, the baton is going to be used for a couple of gigs up in Scotland, then is supposed to come back down for gigs in England. I believe Peter (Ubassman) already has a gig lined up for it in early July, so it should be free within the month. Where are you based?
 14.
you can invert the phase of a channel in logic, i think its in the 'gain' plugin.
Cheers! That'll come in handy for the next mix comp!
 15.
Yeah! Shut up Milty, you dweeb.
haha!
In that case I look forward to your signature bass when you become well known enough to have one.
It's easy to make me seem like a complete idiot when you take what I'm saying out of context. What I was saying (and this must be the third or fourth time I've said it in this thread alone) was that he had the creative freedom to position whatever pickups he wanted, wherever he wanted, and same with controls. It seems he rather just made a bass where you, yourself, can choose the tone you want. I thought the whole point of signature basses was trying to sell a bass that a famous bassist has helped design or customise off the back of "sounding like *that famous bassist". This doesn't do that. This is a bass with Guy's name on it. You could sound like Guy, if he never moves the pickups, and if you never move them either, but then what's the point?
 16.
That's a very good point. Why would anyone want to pay lots or dosh for someone else's idea of their ideal bass? People who haven't a clue what THEY want perhaps?
Exactly the point I was getting at!
 17.
You'll know it when you hear it - kinda like somebody took one of the sliders on a graphic EQ and slid it all the way to the top - then cut most of the rest. It just means that the two versions of the same signal are crossing each other and part of one wave is cancelling out part of another.
Yeah, I understand that, but is there any kind of rule to say how far away from a speaker a mic should be so that there is no phase cancellation?
 18.
Move the mic around until it goes away! Seriously, move the mic. Doing it in the DAW is possible by nudging the one of the tracks by a couple of milliseconds so that waveforms aren't cancelling each other out but I'm of the opinion that if you want it to sound right at the end, get it right at the start.
But how do you know where the phase issues come into it? I feel there's a massive chunk of information that i'm missing here! I understand what phase is and all, I just don't understand how you can apply that you some actual tangible thing.
 19.
Sorry there, my point is that yes with all the research and development that would have gone into his bass, yes Guy could have tried out many many different pickup positions and come up with a final fixed pickup model to be released to the public. But (and of course I'm assuming here) he probably has a large bass collection so he would have most things covered, so why make a bass that does what he already has? Anyway Guy Pratt is a known player that, in his work, is not known for playing a particular bass ( like Jaco, Roger Waters for example..), he is rather a chameleon of bass as he is a session guy. Makes Perfect sense to build a chameleon of a bass for his signature when you think about it.
Well, I suppose the second part of your argument makes most sense. I'm too tired though
 20.
you would sort out phase issues in the DAW. what are you using?
Logic Pro 9 So it's not an issue as you can sort it out after you record?
 21. Red Hot Chili Peppers and their heavily bass guitar driven songs A love of music, and a desire to be creative Seeing how many guitar players/wasters there were around, and not wanting to deafen myself with drums That's how I decided to learn bass
 22. [hijack] But how would you deal with the phase issues if you were going into something like an Apogee Duet? I was thinking of recording this way - DI and mic at cab - but how do you solve the phase issues? Is there something in the Apogee to sort it?
 23.
I'm sure Guy Pratt being a proper working bassist has a bass of every kind for every occasion in collection. So what do you give to the bassist who has everything? Warwick gave him the opportunity to design a bass so he went for it. Who can blame him? It's not like he'll have paid for it. Do I like it? Yes, it's a great idea I reckon. Would I buy one if I could afford it? No, I'd give the money to a decent luthier to build MY signature bass.
What's your point then? It's good because Guy got something for free? He got his bass built? I like how it looks, and it's not a bad idea, really, and it sounds pretty good too, I just don't think that's what a signature bass should be about.
 24.
Interesting. I was trying to figure out exactly how you could do that with only tape technology and did a couple of searches to see if anyone knew or had worked out how the Les Paulveriser worked. I found this post that seems to suggest that the looping portion of the device is actually fake and that he's just cueing up pre-recorded tapes. Have a look and listen to this clip: When he "records" the first guitar part and then plays it back it sounds completely different, and then when he performs the whole piece, the backing suddenly becomes far more complex than any of the individual parts he was "laying down" beforehand. What do you think?
I think loops do tend to sound completely different anyway. I think the loops he made were genuine, but after he made the loops, a totally different track plays, so he was just showing off in that clip that he had invented a loop box.
 25.
can we get back to slagging off this sh*tty bass please?
No!
