Daft Punk - Get Lucky. I've not stopped since I first heard it. The whole album is great.
You got that right! -
If you're going to have a wet dream speaker, it might as well be a proper one at significantly greater cost than the piddly BB5XBD at £58k including amps. The Eggleston Ivy Wetdream is an eminently reasonable $100k without amps, as used by Bob Ludwig at Gateway Mastering:
But how much does it colour the sound?
Cheers. I'll definitley be looking further into the life-span of the coated Ernie ball, D'Addario and GHS sets over the nickel rounds as they are all dying pretty quickly on me albeit the D'Addario lasting slightly longer.
I find D'Addario to last fairly long without any coating. In fact, when it comes to guitar strings, the uncoated ones are lasting longer for me now than the coated ones, oddly enough.
done, bottom is in white, enjoy the keywords....
Ha, you're a bad man Dave
I would expect to make minimal adjustments to the EQ, or none at all. If you are in that situation you have the right amp. IMO, excessive EQ adjustment means you have the wrong amp for you.
Exactly! EQing can't get you the sound you want, just give preference to a certain frequency, which won't get you the sound you want.
Hm. Not so sure about that. He's fully aware, and possibly has a team of people calculating the pros and cons. b, b
Sounds like they are circling the plughole at this stage.

Hope he reads this and sees the damage he has done to his own company.
It's all in your fingers and strings init? Too much top end: strings too new or nails too long. Too dull: need new strings. Too wooly: play using the tips of your fingers. YMMV
I like the album because of the music, but holy hell is there some inspirational playing on that album, and not just for bass, guitar, drums and synth. It's fantastic.
Have to say, I never realised so many people liked Daft Punk until the news of this CD was released... all of a sudden, friends all pretend they've always liked the robots... Pretty much the same thing happened when Michael Jackson died - I remember telling a mate that MJ was one of my fave artists and they laughed. As soon as news of his passing spread, everyone was going on about how much they loved his music! Guess we're just trend setters! Fave track on the album though is 'Fragments of Time', it's got that west coast feel ala Steely Dan/Aja
I'm not surprised with the amount of promotion they've had with this album. But it's probably not unlikely for people just to say things just to fit in. I listened to the new album yesterday at 12.45pm, just 45 minutes after it was released on Spotify, and I had decided it was fantastic before any of my friends had even had a chance to listen to it. I have however already said that I wasn't a massive fan of their before, but it's not like I didn't like them, I did, I just like them far far more now based on this album. If they died before this album was made, I wouldn't act like I was a massive fan.
I think the issue here is the low end Ashdown stuff, which as anyone would expect, isn't the best equipment as it is cost effective, which is the same for EVERY brand out there, I think the reason Ashdown get the bad press is because of the amount of people who use their stuff, having said that though, from what I've read and heard about their ABM series, it's all supposed to be good gear, even more so that CTM 300 head, I've heard lots of positives about it, just wish I could afford one right now (Casual hint to Ashdown if they are reading this thread still)
ABM heads sound great IMO! The guy I bought mine off said he always ends up coming back to the Ashdown gear (although he was using a little bastard at the time I believe), and he had some really nice gear, so the Ashdown gear obviously wasn't that bad. I don't know what exactly he liked about it, but personally, I like the warmth and roundedness of the ABM head I have. It has a little valve in the preamp, which some would say doesn't do much, but it sounds to me like it's definitely doing something. You can turn up the preamp volume too and get some nice grit from it. It's just cool.
I have always used a smiley face on my eq. I keep going back and trying to redo it with "only my ears" but it always comes out the same, but, even though it sounds good to me, the comments here keep knocking my confidence in it. Although, thanks to the resonant frequency of this room, it's now a smiley face with a buck tooth, my amp looks like a bloomin' Hillbilly.
I normally use an S shape, and that is bass either at 12 o'clock, or turned down, mids neutral (12 o'clock) and treble rolled up. I do the reverse on a guitar amp. They probably don't sound good together, mind you, but sound pretty decent on their own.
-
How do you know when you've got the right amp? Is it when you plug straight in and don't have to touch the eq? I'm finding now that as I learn more about the sound that I am really tweaking the hell out of the graphic. So, does that mean that, I either have the wrong amp? Or that I'm getting the absolute most out of it? Help and opinion is greatly appreciated Andy
I find there are things about an amp that you can't EQ. The way it colours your sound being the main one. The EQ won't exactly change the sound, just make a certain frequency louder so that it's more pronounced. A good amp and the sound you want aren't the same thing. You can't always EQ an amp to get the sound you want. Pick an amp that sounds like you want, then you won't have to touch the EQ much.
I don't see how it's directly a Chic ripoff when it actually features half of the songwriting team of Chic on the album. It is nothing groundbreaking that's for sure, more annoying still is that everyone seems terrifyed of giving it a bad critic, complete bandwagoning going on. I am a huge Daft Punk fan, the album features some good moments but I think Thomas Bangalter and Guy Manuel de-Homem Christo have missed the mark this time. Daft Punk were always electronic artists that emulated live sounding house music, now they're just getting other musicians to do it for them and they've lost their appeal.
I disagree. I was never anti-Daft Punk, but this album appeals to me quite a bit, because of the grooves and rhythms. It is something new in a way that it's clashed a couple of different, very obvious, decades of music together, and while doing so, made them all sound better. If you're more into the old Daft Punk, that's cool, but I wouldn't say anybody who likes this one is "bandwagoning", personally, I think it's better than the likes of Discovery, which is an OK album, but next to this, no contest in my mind.
-
Can't really figure out what Daft Punk are doing on most of the tracks on the album... guess they just sit and watch!
Greatest thing about them is that they do all the technical wizardry stuff. Daft Punk are producers, in my mind. Get lucky is a great song, but what is even greater is the rest of the bloody album. It's incredibly funky, expect to hear some modernised cliches from the past. There are some big hitting songs that sound like really expensive tracks that a magician or some other performer would play during their act, but it doesn't sound like a gimmick, it doesn't sound chintzy. The track with Giorgio is immense! And the greatest thing about it all is it's going to breathe new life into funk, and make it a cool thing again. I think we should expect to hear a little more funk persuasion in the future (oh, and like that sentence won't come back in a few years to bite me on the ass if i'm wrong )
Well normally I have my eyes on the recording forum, but I've had some sad sh*t going on in my life in the last few weeks and I'd forgotten about it, and the composition challenge (for which I've had no time to submit an entry either) so it was skol's sig that drew me to it about an hour ago.
Sorry to hear that you're having trouble mate It's good that Skol's sig idea is working though.
-
Some excellent entries, there were two that really stood out for me. I voted for the one I imagined some grizzled old geezers driving dusty roads to, with a million telegraph poles disappearing into the hazy horizon.
Just out of curiosity, did any of our signatures lead you to vote, or were you just going to do it anyway?
Kodak were an established business with a brand that was recognised worldwide. They failed to keep in touch with their customers and the rest of the photographic industry leading to their brief and failed foray into digital photography. Prior to their collapse they gathered together as many patents as they could lay their hands on in an attempt to capitalise on their IP. Don't know why that sprang to mind...
OH, burn Ricky!
Lady Macbeth from Macbeth play by Shakespeare:-) Walks around naked washing her hands once the murder starts. Much better than Inspector Poirot or Morse.
hmmm... eh.... hmm... *leaves room*
I am about to put a bass up for sale. With some clever cropping I think I have avoided the plums copyright claims.
Is it a special bass of a well known shape?

My understanding of the word "truss" was that you reinforce something with triangulation. Having a truss rod run perfectly parallel to the thing it is supposed to strengthen is defeating the purpose to a degree.
Maybe Lady Macbeth was a conscientious bass player. All that hand-washing.
Careful, my hairs parting as that one flies over my head.
From a purely Grammar Nazi point of view, it's not actually possible to increase a reputation ...
Oops Get themselves a better reputation. (is that better? )
