Pretty much finished although I'm already working on a new, improved version in blonde. Then there's the fretless version with piezo....... I'm quite pleased with the way it handles and sounds with the humbuckers but I might add a few switching options - making nickel/chrome covers for the pickups too. The bridge looks a bit modern so I'm thinking of replacing it with a Supertone 2 point, just because it's got a nicer shape. Lots to think about still.
Wow, that looks great! Well done! How does it sound?
Thought I would have a go at this months competition. Don't have a soundcloud account or proper recording equipment so I have used a blackberry playbook video recorder and the internal microphone. Not the greatest quality but as its a video you have the added bonus of my gurning bass face throughout... The second picture made me think of spring... dunno why... just did... So I have created this piece called 'Spring Greens', which is what I happened to be having for dinner when I wrote it. This also isn't a jazz piece... but never mind! My girlfriend has created me a YouTube account and uploaded it for me (clever girl) so here is a link to that
That's fantastic! And finally, a song played only on bass that I don't hate! (Apart from on by Flea, but you couldn't really call his a song). Well done

Piezo pickups - Is there much difference?
MiltyG565 replied to MiltyG565's topic in Repairs and Technical
Just found this. It's cool to hear the difference, but it's even funnier at how crap this video it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&feature=endscreen&v=w6IOacWi10s -
'Scuse my higorance here, but all this pish about good and bad tuners, how can a tuner gear (unless it's really a ten pence far East item) actually let a string go out of tune? A string needs retuning because you've just stretched the tits out of it with a bit of enthusiastic playing for a while, surely. My Squier VM Jazz has had no tuning issues in a year and a half. In fact, each time I take it out of it's case it's exactly the same as I left it, as does my Yammy BBN5. If I'm seriously missing something here, I'll sit and humbly take it all on board and happily digest new found knowledge.
But strings have a fair amount of tension on them all the time, so by this theory, they would stretch out of tune just by doing nothing. I don't think playing puts too much extra tension on the string, unless you are playing slap, and even when I play slap, my strings hardly detune. It all comes back to fulcrum points. When you bend a string, you are essentially increasing the tension, and the string slides a bit out of the nut and bridge, and when you stop bending, it should return to the point it was at before, but it doesn't always, and that's when it detunes. It's more of an issue with 6 string guitars than basses, as the longer scale on basses seems to be able to absorb these changes in tension much more easily. I've used crap tunes before, and the bass has gone out of tune pretty easy. They do make a difference, but beyond a certain point, it's just a brand name. I've used Wilkinson tuners before, and they are pretty good. Really reliable, good solid gear, and pretty cheap. You should just go for it. I used the old Fender style ones.
Most posters here may be too young to remember.
Definitely Also, I'm not a huge Gibson fan, but I think this new one looks pretty cool, and I think that's what they are aiming for, to be the cool brand again. There's only so long the 60's and 70's kids can keep them in business
Yes, and even more so for well organised festivals and functions. Typically an electrician will come and PAT test ten items for around £40, so it's easy to swallow as a band.
I could do that, just patting the gear. *pat pat* "Good job, gear".

Where's the map for it?
It is Poor form Milt , and I do jest , but with a bit of the referencing I did ,and the amount of tinkering ,I just happen to have my version stuck in my head and everything else sounds like an ammended version of mine
Oh someone takes pride in their work If you want to know, I didn't vote for mine, or even the one which I thought was mixed the best.
-
Cheers Si, It must be a PITA , bust I appreciatte the work you put in . I would offer myself but My speeds are dog slow here , and I have had a couple of issues myself with soundcloud seeming to time out , Maybe I could stop late at work sometime , if it comes to it I could probably do it that way , to take a turn . Is it poor form to vote for your own , I am not sure if it is because I listened to my version sooooooo many times , it feels like the original now, and I always think the original sounds best
If you think your version sounds best, vote for it. That's the point - Pick your favourite mix. It's like Woolworth's is back!
I won't vote until I've heard them through a decent system. I can't make judgements while in the office on my crappy logic3 speakers.
That's fair enough!
Oh now, leading question matey, can't possibly answer that having gone to all the trouble of putting it together anonymously. But I will say this, currently mine is my favourite one. There are a couple that come close, but for me mine has the best treatment of oiurtfewnfoihvroijnvrnoirv piojoijepiofjiopjer pjpoj pio jpioj ipj piojpojpo j ojkljhde dojhnd..... ... sorry we are breaking up Any of you who have paid attention to all the mixes so far will almost certainly recognise which one mine is if you listen hard on a decent playback device, some thing about my approach on these comp mixes where I have very limited time tends to make my mixes have a certain iuohnfoerijfoeijf efwpofjerpojerf loih oih ouhouhfewpoijfewpiojfewiojceoinoi fe about them that I think is quite recognisable. Sorry, terrible line at the moment, something to do with solar activity maybe?
Ha! There was one which I thought was a bit too well done, but I don't think that was the one I voted for... (yes it is odd).
+++1 !!! What make of bass is this (I couldn't catch what he said at the start)?
No idea. I saw the bass and thought "Oh for f*** sake", then when he wouldn't shut up, I drifted towards the close button, then he said he was using effects - instantly closed it. If you want us to hear how something sounds, in my eyes, you play it completely clean and without any effects. -
My internet connection runs at a snails pace at the best of times (uploading videos can take several hours in some cases) or I would volunteer to do it. Why has nobody voted? I thought my one sounded pretty poor next to the others. What's your own favourite, Simon?
Check this video: http://www.youtube.com/v/AJ1B4vVXZTI to see/hear the difference between piezo and magnetic pickups sound. Mark
Wish he would shush and play the thing. Cheers for the video though Stopped the video when he said he was using delay. -
Superb, well done Si! Sterling effort mate... especially as you had to upload 12 mixes this month. I think I can speak for everyone here by saying a massive CHEERS for sorting this out!!
Yup, Cheers again mate for running this, I've enjoyed it, it's given me something to do Looking forward to the next one.

Ha, there's a couple that are definitely mixed by bassists, going on how loud the double bass is
Just don't expect too much, I spent ages designing and building multi-functional guitars 15 or so years ago, piezos, midi hookups etc etc, and they turned out to be not much good at any one thing, so I went back to having a strat, a tele, an SG and a couple of acoustics, and doing midi stuff with keyboards. It all sounded better in the end. Fun to do though, btw, Alan IS ACG pretty much.
Yeah, I'm a pretty firm believer that something works best when it is only designed for one thing. Phones work best when they are phones, not small computers, and vice versa. Thing is though, i'm not trying to make it anything it's not. I'm not really compromising the functionality of anything, just combining them to make the bass more versatile. -
I agree. I'm a pretty strong believer that the electronics and the strings have much more impact of the amplified sound than anything else.
