1.
We've got a well established bassist here, one with a wealth of experience that he seems willing to share. Lets focus on the positives and try not to hound him too much eh
Yeah, leave me alone guys, quit hounding me
 2. I have an old ABM 400 rack head, and I think it sounds great. It wasn't expensive either. It's the head I used to record my half-rounds review (I don't have a DI box). I've not used many amps, but this one is definitely the best that I have used.
 3.
I was wondering why on earth some newbie had been getting so much attention in his introduction thread, and why for days I kept seeing it in "new content". Bit like how I used to be in a band with Justin Hawkins (yes, that one) but didnt realise it was him in The Darkness until about a year into their massive rise to fame with that first album I don't own. Admitedly he used to have awesome dreadlocks which sort of threw me off the scent. I never got round to putting that story in the tenuous link to fame thread. So poor old Guy didnt stand much of a chance eh. Welcome
Ha! Well, Liam Neeson went to my school. SUCK ON THAT! (Although, he went about 40 years before me, then visited the year after I left! )
 4. Bumping this up. Looking for more info on Piezo pickups. Things I want to know is - what is a good one for bass? How/where is it in stalled (Would rather not have to install it in special bridge saddles)?
 5.
Water under the bridge, eh? Is that why the thread title clearly suggests Kiwi is not lovely? Is that why you feel the need to repeat your oversensitive response to an interwebs remark? Is that why you feel the need to use constructs like "well within my rights" and "to the point of slander"? Well, I don't buy it. You could simply have said: "Kiwi, mate, I don't know what happened, but as far as I can remember, I've never done what you think I've done." We all know what you opted for instead. The pressure on Kiwi must have been enormous. Myself having been on the receiving end of similar, potentially income threatening remarks, I surely think I understand your feelings. They can however be dealt with in vastly better ways. best, bert
How nice somebody is is completely subjective though. I like Kiwi, and plenty of members on here, but i'm sure there are plenty of members who don't like all the members I do, for whatever reasons. You can't really have a go at him for not taking a shine to somebody who apparently called him a racist. Kiwi is a smart man, and entitled to his own thoughts, like us all. I don't know what happened there, maybe Kiwi was having a rough day, hey, we've all been there, and done things we've regretted too, but what Kiwi says carries a bit more weight than most on here, him being half the force that runs this site. We wouldn't get away with calling somebody a racist, especially not a famous bassist. As far as i'm concerned, Guy is willing to let it go, Kiwi has made an apology (of sorts). It was a regretful thing to happen, but the comment has been retracted, Guy isn't going to take it further (as far as we know) and that should be that. If it's not an issue anymore, we should just let it go, and put it down as an unfortunate incident.
 6.
Or now that the 80's have long gone they are illegal :-)
Heh
 7.
No, but it's serial number 512 in case anyone finds it.. Don't get the crack analogy I'm afraid..
I think he might have meant they are addictive. Or, that they come in rock form
 8. I have a general disdain for most "boutique" basses and "technique" enthusiasts. A similar kind of disdain that a regular chav would have for people smarter than them, who own tasteful things (although mine is justified ). I'm in.
 9.
Don't listen to them - i've not fallen for a P or a J yet - currently playing a Thumb. Evolution innit?
There's still time...
 10.
I currently have a Takamine EF407 electro acoustic guitar as my main acoustic. I usually just play at home but lately I've been to a few jam nights and taken it along. I'm struggling to get enough volume from the guitar alone (there are no amps etc). It's a small guitar (New Yorker style), and I'm pretty sure the last strings I put on were Extra Light Ernie Ball Earthwounds. I was wondering if putting a heavier gauge string on might increase the volume a little, and if so, how heavy would the guitar be able to handle? The guitar scale is 24 3/8 inches I think. Cheers.
Heavier strings, for definite. Try a set if 13s. A set of phosphor bronze. I'm currently using D'Addario exp acoustic strings at the minute. Lighter strings have less volume, heavier strings have more bass. I have a set of 11s on mine at the minute, and interestingly, I can downtune the bass E string by an entire octave. You can definitely go pretty light with the bass strings, but it wouldn't sound great (too trebly) or even be very loud.
 11.
cheers y'all. so far in my 2 days of bassing I've learnt of the great divide betwixt traditional and modern basses. Who'd of thunk it? I went modern with an Ibby SR700. I likes it I does.
Hello! Yup, and J or a P will be in your possession at some point in the future. Every bassist goes through a J or P phase. Although, it can be hard to find a really good one if you don't have a lavish budget. Not impossible, just difficult (IMO). Anyway, have fun, and enjoy
 12.
I love a happy ending
This isn't that kind of place....
 13.
Thanks. It's an odd colour. When the light hits it, it looks quite different - a bit more blue-ish green and you can clearly see the grain of the wood. It's called Transparent Teal I think. CB
It's cool. Transparent colours are always cool though... and that's just decided something else about my bass build Cheers!
 14.
Guess it's taken me a long while to post this. Probably not to many people's tastes. CB
That is seriously nice! The colour is cool. Like the old British Racing Green Jag's used to come in!
 15.
For you maybe, but that extra penny you got is an extra penny that someone else didn't get. In that sense, it's a zero-sum game.
No. That's a stupid argument. Being able to get hold of these strings cheaply in the UK will only mean more sales of them. So in a sense, everyone benefits.
 16.
Rubbish. He like the strings and nothing compares to them. Just pay the money and get what you want rather than compromising.
How is trying to save some money on strings compromising? He'll have the same strings at a cheaper price if he can get them. That's not compromising, that's good sense. A penny saved really is a penny earned, and that's a mantra you could literally take to the bank.
 17.
Then what are you doing on a public forum? That's a genuine question, by the way...
I thought we were talking about strings and importing them from other countries, not the validity of somebodies question, or how clear a response is to the question.
 18. Honestly, I just wanted to know if he paid UK VAT when the package arrived in the UK. I didn't see it written anywhere so I asked. I'm not a mind reader, and I don't think I'm stupid or incompetent for asking either. If somebody gets made fun of for asking a genuine question, I don't know what to say, it makes me a bit depressed.
 19.
Did that price that you paid include duty?
Ha Ha Ha... no.
 20.
NO!
Alright, calm down, I was just wondering.
 21.
Thats what I paid, so its net of everything
So you didn't have to pay UK VAT when you got it from the post office?
 22.
What's VAT?
You know, this and VAT. VAT over there. No, I don't want VAT one, I want VAT one.
 23.
The strings are $30 and postage was either $12 or $14 (can't remember which) which means at $1.5/£ it was about £28-29
Is that including VAT?
 24.
You like them. Just pay up. This isn't a cheap hobby.
A penny saved is a penny earned. It's not a cheap hobby, which is all the more reason to save money where possible.
 25.
Isn't this just a barre?
Oh is it? I'll have a pint of Magner's then...
