The band I play in. Apparently we're sexual deviants...
MiltyG565 replied to far0n's topic in General Discussion
Our agent received this somewhat hilarious letter, outlining his dismay at our 'pornographic' show ! Anyway, read for yourself !!
HAHAHA! "Hey, you invited that girl on stage, you can't do that, that's sexual harassment, you know!" What a stupid complaint! If the guys ability to write a sentence is anything to go by, he's not very bright (Although it's possible that they have some disorder). -

Basschat Competition Bass (13 Guitar Co.) - CONCLUSION!
You definitely know about my cooking! Baking is one type of mixing I just can't seem to get my head around...
That's funny, because it's the only mixing I seem to be capable of! -
Piezo pickups - Is there much difference?
MiltyG565 replied to MiltyG565's topic in Repairs and Technical
I've sent off a PM to Alan (Skelf). It will be interesting to see if we can get it to function the way I think it should in my head. And you might also be interested to learn that I have also come up with a similarly insane telecaster-based guitar, but it doesn't invest so heavily in a preamp... in fact, it doesn't need a preamp at all, but it should be cool. Hopefully I can make it to match this bass. -
Yep.
Ah, cool. And he makes ACG preamps? -
I love my 500W Superfly. Nothing wrong with it, never let me down, loud enough for most gigs, portable and sounds great; though, admittedly, I use an expensive bass guitar. Growls on the lows and is clear on the highs - even our guitar player asked how such a big sound came out of something so little, he was impressed by the definition. **Never used the MAG or ABM heads, though I am tempted by an ABM 1K for the power!
I've got an ABM head, and it's really good. Nice warm tones, but not so warm as to be classified "vintage" sounding. Just a nice roundness to it, and a lovely balance to it, not too trebly or middy. It's really good, considering the money I paid for it. Obviously, there's better amps out there (which would be a matter of opinion) but for the money, and from what I can tell, it's pretty damn rocking!
PM Skelf, he's a member on here.
Is he Alan? -
What are you listening to right now?

Some weird song by Thom Yorke (I know that doesn't narrow it down much). -
Sorry i thought you were actually buying an ACG pre-amp and not an 'ACG like' preamp.
I might, if the makers of them want to do me a special one... -
Check with Alan im sure he has done combined piezo and mag pups in the past.
Who's Alan? -
If the resonance of the wooden or other substrate(s) that the ends of the strings are anchored to/vibrating off comprises more than 10% of the final sound coming out of an electromagnetic pickup mounted to said substrate(s), which principally works by a magnetic field being disturbed by metal strings vibrating through it then I'd be very surprised (and I think I'm being generous). Without a definitive means of measuring whatever influence the wood may or may not have on the final output of an electric bass then it's ripe for distortion through personal opinion and subjectivity. I'm not saying definitively that there is no effect, because I can't but no-one so far has definitively proven to me there is an effect, let alone tried to quantify it.
I couldn't agree more!
-
I don't think it is important.
Why? (just generally curious as to why you think that, not questioning your reasoning).
A transducer is an electrical device, and electrical devices are never perfect. You choose your parameters, and specify a device accordingly. If you play a B on your bass, and a B comes out your speaker, there's a goodly degree of transparency. From there, you have a wide variety of finer divisions thereof. Edit: Should be noted a speaker is also a transducer. As is the microphone mentioned in the previous example.
Yes, that is why I then used the term transducer. Microphones can be as colouring as pickups and amps.
Yeah, and if the preamp has a really high impedance on its own, its not needed either.
That's cool. I'll not get in to impedance, I think that's a bit beyond me All I know is, 500k pots instead of 250k pots makes for a brighter sound -
How far off are we from finding out the big news??
Too far, it should be revealed now!

I win! I win!

That is a SCHWEEEEEEET guitar!
-
Some are more 'transparent' than others, but I agree. Then again I am no expert!
Somebody in the know will likely educate us both soon, but I don't think a full transparent transducer really exists in any forms in music, but then, i'm far from an expert too.
-
A pickup that does not introduce its own character to the sound. Although I would have thought that most pickups do this, as the acoustic sound is very different to the transduced and amplified sound. To test this, try holding a microphone up to a vibrating bass string. Is that really the sound that you would want?
That's my point. I've never actually heard of a truly transparent pickup.
RE: the GIMP - if it's free vector graphics you want, then you want Inkscape. It's not super technical like CAD though (I wouldn't trust a measurement from it) - it's more like a free alternative to Adobe Illustrator. For free 2D CAD, try QCAD - http://qcadbin-win.sourceforge.net/ - I've never tried it, but it looks fairly straightforward from the screenshot on the page.
Cheers! I'll take a look at that too!
-
Google Sketchup is free and more user friendly than AutoCad, which I found quite laborious. I do all my sketches on GS now.
Cool, cheers for that! I'll give it a look!
-
Means the bass is worth putting nice transparent pickups in it. And eq on the amp is the enemy of good tone, basically, its there to compensate from problems, to 'equalise' them to the ideal of flat response to the right sound. Bass is step one of your signal path from your fingers, getting it right there means all you need to focus on is not messing it up with everything else.
But what is a transparent pickup? It seems like a pretty illusive thing.
Depends on what you want to do in the software, I use Photoshop in my day job so I use that to make mock-ups to see how a design will look but they aren't to scale just pretty pictures, there's a free program called GIMP that is similar to Photoshop that you could try, it would be ideal for sketching out ideas. AutoCad is the big cheese when it comes to technical drawings but it's expensive and complicated, maybe someone else knows of a cheap alternative?
Yes, I would rather it was technical, then I could work from it. Auto-cad, I think not. I can hardly work a simple, free version of photoshop (a rip off really), let alone something like Auto-Cad
I think Wide/narrow generally refers to the nut width e.g. Precision = wide, Jazz = narrow Wheras thick/thin refers to the distance from the back of the neck to the front of the fingerboard. E.g. thick = baseball bat type profile, thin = more like a cricket bat (but round, and narrow) My Jazz is narrow and thick, my Sabre is wide and thin
This makes sense to me! I think that's the way i'll describe necks from now on - Narrow/wide - Fretboard width, Thin/thick - neck depth.
-
I have been reading around about neck profiles lately and with lines like bass neck being 'thin, like a Jazz' or being 'fat, like a '62 P' and I've not fully understood what the person was saying. Can I suggest standardising the terms to the following - or better - if only so I can understand what people are saying? Referring to nut length

Wide neck = long nut - (P)
Narrow neck = short nut - (Jazz)
Referring to fingerboard to back of neck

Thick (or fat) neck = usually rounded section, larger distance from fingerboard to back of neck (Hofner Beatles Bass)
Slim (or thin) neck = usually flatter section, shorter distance from fingerboard to back of neck (Early Stingray)

You see, I always would have called a J neck slim, because of the width, not the depth, and P or ray neck to be wide because of the width of the fretboard.
