  1. I spent much of my mid/late teens listening to roots and dub. Moved to London in ‘78 and spent a huge chunk of my student grant in Daddy Kool’s. Much of the best stuff on import was £4.50 for a rare 12”. To put this into perspective my first job paid about £50 a week before tax so just one single was equivalent to half a days wages 🙈 I still have them all though! Here’s a typical example:
  2. 84 Strat in sunburst with white pickup covers and a Seymour Duncan humbucker at the bridge
  3. Love that live desk recording The other videos are excellent as well, some quality playing - especially liked this one: I have a few things up for sale - might have to add some more now 😂
  4. Lovely. CAR is becoming one of my favourite colours!
  5. Thanks iMilanek, just think, it could be 😉
  6. Demer power amp now sold - Monique & gig bag available at reduced price
  7. I was playing the two of them back to back this afternoon as well 😂
  8. I think I bought it from you & traded with Steve, he owned it for a while and traded back for something different plus some money. It is a cracker I have to say. I'm only putting it up for sale as I have a '64 that I'm very attached too plus a '78 that's a real rock kinda bass. This one is actually nicer than both overall but I won't sell the '64 after a long restoration and the '78 isn't worth a lot as it's been buggered about with, lol. Definite discounts available for previous owners 😉
  9. Let's look at selling some vintage loveliness today. . . This '74 P is all original as far as I know. I can take it all apart and get pictures if required. The only reason I haven't done so is that I'm selling a batch of things at the moment and if other things sell then I'll probably hang on to this one as I play it a lot! Previously owned by Michael (Wateroftyne) and played on a quite a few gigs by him as far as I understand. It's a lightweight 3.9Kg / 8.6lbs. I've only gigged it twice but it's a 'perfect' weight for a long evening on stage It has a nicely proportioned jazz type neck profile. Not quite as slinky as a 60's J but definitely similar to some 70's J's I've played. There's some wear marking on the rear of the neck but it's not bothered me in playing and frets seem fine to me. Action is set medium/low and I've never had to touch the neck, holds tuning really well from week to week. Obviously the body is worn & nicely faded, metalwork is tarnished and the pickguard is a bit 'warpy' in places but it's all 'real' wear and not artificially relic'd. I particularly like the upper body where there's both red paint & wood showing through - you'd have to pay extra on a new heavy relic Fender Custom Shop for something like this & the price would quickly go over £3K! Has a really nice growl and sounds great if you wind the tone right back & jack the volume right up 😎 Sits in a band mix just like a good old P bass should and reacts nicely to player dynamics or tone/volume twiddling. Comes with a, period correct, aftermarket hard case made out of some sort of hard dark grey plastic - no idea what this is called but it seems to have done the job for many years. Happy to ship in UK or EU at cost. Estimate approx £30 UK & £45 EU (I've allowed a little extra here for insurance). Payment via bank transfer or Paypal friends & family.
  10. Had a couple of trade offers but nothing that really suited so it's still here. . .
  11. Had a bout of really wanting a Status headless 4 but this popped up and I thought it might be fun. I have a Streamline as well buried away somewhere! I think the '66J is likely to go before the sparkly one. Maybe the '74 P next. . .
  12. PRICE REDUCED TO £1,800! The bass cull continues with this genuine 'one of a kind' Status originally made & customised for TM Stevens around 26 years ago. For whatever reason he didn't end up with it & it was then owned by Ashdown for about 20 years and used for testing new kit. I bought it direct from them and it's been played at a couple of rehearsals and one gig since then. Apart from one small surface scratch down the bridge, and some small buckle rash on the rear, it's pretty much perfect - certainly doesn't look 26 years old! The surface marks should be visible in the pictures below - The volume control 'sometimes' has a little scratch sound right at the end of it's travel towards off position but you have to listen very closely to hear this. It may well go with a continued bout of twisting. Some screws and bridge hardware are showing some age but I felt this just added a bit of character It has no serial number and there has been some debate between various Status experts (all of them far more knowledgeable than I) about whether it's an S2 Classic or an Empathy. Rob Green thinks it's an S2 so that's probably a safe bet. Here's what Ashdown said about it: "This S2-Classic is the ultimate combination of traditional and modern guitar design. Made in the 80's built for TM Stevens and painted by a top German artist. TM Stevens never actually ended up with the bass instead it found its way into our possession around 20 years ago and has been one of our go to test basses. Woven carbon graphite and selected exotic woods are combined to create a bass which sounds even better than it looks. It has a wide, even frequency response with huge dynamics and sustain." Note that the artist signature appears to be Andi Graphic Art 94 - this would suggest it's a bit newer than the Ashdown estimate but that 94 may not be the date it was made and/or have nothing to do with that at all. Could just be the 94th piece of custom artwork etc. It has the classic Status electronics with the sweepable mid boost/cut switch and sounds just like a Status should - great cut through that sits in a live mix really nicely. Happy to post anywhere in the UK / EU at cost - probably £25 UK & £40 EU (both with insurance).
  13. Looks like this is now sold - just waiting for international money transfer to complete Thanks again to Basschat for providing the sale connection.
  14. Approximately 23mm & 25mm - roughly 2-3mm deeper than my '66 J (which was sitting next to it on the wall).
  15. I bought this one just to see how they compared with my old Fenders and I have to say it does a great job. The pick guard especially impressed me as this can be an area where heavy relics fall down but this one is just the right amount of fade & wear plus it shows the indentations of where a pickup cover might have sat for years. Even the little cracks around 2 screws have additional ageing - really thorough job!
  16. Had a couple of people ask about splitting the Monique out & selling separately. Wasn't sure about this as the case is designed to carry both but the Jule website still sells this case for Monique only and shows how you could use it just for cables With that in mind I'll split them up if anyone wants just Monique & her case - I'll take £1,225 for them
  17. May accept trades on this one with, ideally, some money coming my way as part of the deal. Would need to be 4 strings and not too heavy - maybe something like a Japanese Fender in an interesting colour 😁
  18. Hot on the heels on the Ken Smith I've just sold is something very different. A Limelight vintage jazz replica with one of the best 'heavy' relic jobs I've seen, right down to the marks where a bridge ashtray might have sat & peeled the top coat away when removed and cracks in the guard from 'years' of wear and abuse! Bought this about 2 years ago and only used at home for most of that time. Then I took it to rehearsal so see if I could 'fool' my band members as I know the guitarists are a sucker for vintage Fender. Of course both of them assumed it was the real thing and were in awe of my 'pre CBS' jazz and particularly liked how it sounded through my Helix & RCF monitor. It worked especially well on rock and punky stuff and sounded great with a pick - in fact I loved the pick sound so much that I spent the rest of the evening using it this way. The band genuinely said it was the best I'd ever sounded when playing with them & we've been together for 7 years! However, the neck profile is a shade too chunky for me. It's far from being the clubbiest neck I've ever played but it's quite a rounded shape and I tend to prefer really skinny necks - basically because I'm a wimp & this is a bit of a 'man's bass' 🤣. Were it not for this, I'd be happily gigging this bass & not at all worried about the relic'd nature or that fact it isn't a real Fender. My scales say it weighs 9.25 lbs but it feels a bit heavier to me, I'd say it closer to 9.5/9.6lbs but that's just an estimate. It's far from being overweight and comfortable on a strap. It didn't come with a case but I might be able to find a basic gig bag and I'm happy to ship within the UK or EU at cost. Payment by bank transfer or PayPal friends only please. FOR THE AVOIDANCE OF DOUBT: THIS IS NOT A FENDER GUITAR, MERELY A REPLICA (and I wasn't the person who added the logo)
  19. SOLD to someone I’ve dealt with in the past who was the first to contact me and drove over to collect today. Thanks to BassChat for the facility 😉
  20. Hi Franck, See post above about weight. Case (and strap) are excellent. Couple of small dings but it looks more like a 'house-bass' than anything that's been gigged.
  21. My digital scales are inaccessible at the moment (buried in storage) but the previous owner estimated 4.1Kg which feels about right to me. It's certainly not a boat-anchor but, then again, it's super-light like a Ritter or Sadowsky. Hope that helps a bit
  22. Thanks Ped, Great video - hadn't seen this one before! I thought I'd try & price it to sell rather than endless bouts of haggling. I've seen these up around the £2,500 mark but it 'owes' me less than that so I thought I'd try and sell it at a fair price
  23. I really do love it Gareth but I’m determined to clear some gear out and thought I’d put a few more desirable things up first 🙈
  24. So this one is going to hurt - my favourite ever gigging combo up for sale! I've moved to modelling amps through stage monitors now so just can't justify something as good as this sitting in my study doing nothing I've tried combos from loads of different manufacturers but always came back to this one as my 'do it all' unit. I can carry it it one hand, it fits in the boot of a, relatively, small car, can be set up to work in all sorts of bands, has a decent DI out and it goes both low and LOUD if required. The two key determining factors for me were that it's a fairly easy lift at only 16Kg and it sounds great in a live band setting without needing to go into the PA (although I always try to DI whenever possible). This simply the only combo that's ever fulfilled everything I wanted. The newer AC combo is excellent but it's simply too heavy for me as a one-handed lift - it adds a useful mid-driver but it's nearly 70% heavier! It also, theoretically, has double the power output, however, that's only the case when you add a 2nd cab - at which point it makes even less sense to me. The original AC Lite puts out the full 500w into the 12", 4ohm, driver whilst the integrated compression driver has a second power amp pushing at 300w. I've never driven mine really, really loud but I was present in our store when a customer wanted to try one at as close to full volume as possible & it was deafening! The single 12" driver goes way lower than it ought to be able to and you can forget any of the mentions of it being a 'jazz' combo in some reviews - this thing rocks out and punches way above its weight. That dedicated high compression driver also means it'll work really well in a funk / soul setting. It's been gigged maybe 20 times from new and in every case has also fed into foh via the integrated DI so it's never been pushed hard. I really take care of all my gear and it's in excellent condition. No bad scuffs or marks anywhere & even still has the sticker on the front. There's a tiny bit of stippling on a small patch on the left hand side where I've used a MarkBass Keeper on velcro. These are great by the way, I used them all the time with any MarkBass gear. Should be able to post in UK, at cost, or can arrange pickup / delivery if anyone lives close enough to me in Henley. Here's what MarkBass say: "Alain Caron is an incredible jazz bassist from Canada that has spent years developing his own feel and sound using extended range basses. After using Markbass amplifiers for years they have finally worked together to build this combo amplifier that has all the tones that Alain needs as a touring jazz musician. The 121 Lite combo is an amplifier than has been designed from the ground up for the touring jazz bass player. Bi-Amp Design While a lot of bass amplifiers use a single amplifier this amplifier uses two separate amps and drivers that deliver 500w of power to the main 12" speaker and 300w to the smaller 1"tweeter that offers up a bright attack along with overtones you may have never heard before. By using two amps instead of one you get the best headroom and dynamics without needing to resort to massive speaker cabinets. Classic MarkBass Tone This little amplifier has been tuned to deliver a sound that suits Alain Caron's needs but it still has the same warm and transparent feel that MarkBass are well known for. All of the innovations and changes made for this amplifier can be adjusted to suit your style. For example you can use the VLE or Vintage Loudspeaker Emulator to give the amp a more vintage tube amp like sound which in turn dials back on the response from the tweeter. Footswitchable Control In recent years more and more bass amps are coming with effects loop bypass and mute switches. These are extremely handy for live use where you may need to mute the amplifier or certain effects for tuning without annoying the rest of the band. Top-level sounding combo designed with bass legend Alain Caron, the COMBO 121 LITE is a powerful bi-amp combo, now updated with a 300W power amp for the new compression driver, and 500W power amp for the 12" speaker with maximum fidelity, headroom and dynamics! Alain Caron is known for his high standards, and the components in this combo were carefully chosen to reach those standards. 25. TRADED Continuing my 'last in first out' policy. . . Another bass I traded for earlier this year. It's a lot of fun to play and looks really cool - I've taken loads of different basses to band rehearsals over the years and my guys are used to me turning up with something different each week. However, it's rare that anything gets more than a cursory glance from the two guitarists. The week I took this one they both came over to have a look and asked for a quick play (with a pick of course, lol). There's just something about the tru oil finish & gorgeous neck that looks a bit special & different to all the high gloss finishes you tend to see. I already have a couple of 'go to' J basses that I'm used to using so hanging on to this one is a luxury I can't afford at the moment. Original description & pics from previous owner: Custom Jazz Bass comprising a Pau Ferro / Ebony (f/board) handmade by Alpher Instruments. This neck was handmade to fit the Warmoth (USA) Alder Jazz bass body This has an added flame maple laminate top and finished in tru oil. "In excellent condition (just a couple of minor marks/dings which may show in photos). Fitted with Fender Custom Shop 60’s Pick ups and brand new John East Deluxe Pre which works both passive and active. The chrome hardware is high-quality Hipshot (USA) plus J. East original knobs (3 std. Plus one stacked). This bass has been totally overhauled and upgraded and is a killer Jazz! Comes in a generic hard case" Happy to ship anywhere in UK or EU at cost. Payment via bank transfer or Paypal friends & family only.
