Speaking as a girl, I can honestly say I found the bass and bassists sexier than guitars and guitarists. There's something quite primal about the low notes and rhythm. Seems to me that guitars are all about short stretches of showing off performances as opposed to wanting to keep things smooth, understated and well performed over the whole performance

I too am bass player with van. Every practice I drive 20 minutes out of my way before practice to pick the PA speakers up from the keys and then another 20 mins after to drop them off. (Keys has storage space I don't). However, the keys and singer bought the PA between them and the guitarist has paid for business cards, web hosting etc. If the van broke down I would expect to pay myself as it is my van even though I use it for band (I also use it for cycling, allotment, etc etc) but equally if something went wrong with the PA I would not expect to stump up any cash. You shouldn't be expected to pay for everything though, that's taking the piss! As for ego massaging, I think the fact that you are not being critiqued is ego massaging enough as a bassist!! Ultimately we only ever get noticed if we stuff up.... No comment means we are doing exactly what we need to That said, it does sound like you are getting very frustrated, so I think you need to sit down and talk to them honestly. I'm not going to suggest you leave, I'm not going to suggest you stay, but you do need to air your grievances before things get out of hand. I wish you luck!

Caught up with it tonight.... Lost respect for Alexander...... Trumpeters better... Pfft Nice round though

What do you do? When you don't feel like practicing?
SpaceChick replied to SevenSeas's topic in General Discussion
I endeavour to practice every night when I get home from work, usually the first half an hour to an hour I'm home before I start making tea. On the weekends I tend to do far more, anything between 2 and 8 hours depending what I have on and whether I have a gig or not (tend not to play as much on days where I have a gig in the evening) However, if there are days when I really don't feel like, I don't. I think it's healthy to have a break now and then. Ultimately if you have to force yourself to play then you'll zap your enjoyment out of it surely? -
Basschat New Music Challenge - TIME TO VOTE!
Nige and Dave often roll up their sleeves and get stuck in - it'd be great if you had a go at it too. No pressure... It's about time we had some "sisters doin' it for themselves" in the monthly challenges. Might be a good excuse to record something with that new bass you've bought (yes, nobody escapes the GAS Police).
There's GAS police!!! Now I'm scared I started one at Christmas with the drunk Santa photo entitled "Santa is a bastard" a lamentable tale of a beaten housewife driven to murder her drunken Santa impersonating husband.... It had jingling bells and sampled ding dong merrily on high! But I didn't finish it in time! Maybe if a photo really grabs me I will have a go.... Although it will be pants.... That said I have had some marvellous help from Stephen on getting set up with recording stuff. -
I'm looking for a used SR300 which people seem to rate (especially our Space Chick).
Yep, I do indeed rate them very highly. Fabulous basses! I have my 4 string with maple neck, 5 string and tomorrow I should be receiving my 4 string that Wunjos de-fretted for me So, I would recommend a second hand Ibanez SR 300 without question.

bass and it's effects on marriages
Join the queue mate!
I know... It's nice work (for a heterosexual male or homosexual female I guess) if you can get it I'm very proud of his work, but I am his moral compass which grades his photos and stops him from accidentally publishing any soft porn! He needs to keep in arty! LOL! I shall tell him that he has a host of potential photography assistants on Basschat Although I guess when he's doing his moody landscape work and getting up at stupid o'clock for the right lighting that he wont have a queue of helpers then -
bass and it's effects on marriages
We're not married, though my other half was with me in the shop when I tried the most recent purchase (Hagstrom 8-string). When it came to a decision, she was the one going, "yes, but it does look lovely, doesn't it? And you know how rare 8-strings are..." (Definitely a keeper!)
My hubby was meant to play "bad cop" in my negotiations for my last bass..... He was rubbish at it and said "I think you should have it". He's very supportive of my playing and gigs but equally I'm also supportive of his photography (even when he's doing art nude shoots and away for weekends with young attractive models who are happy taking their kit off.... Am I mad! LOL!) -
Basschat New Music Challenge - TIME TO VOTE!
SpaceChick replied to Skol303's topic in General Discussion
It is dreadful that so few people have taken the time to listen and vote. I for one always enjoy listening and voting and will at some point join in myself!! It's always lovely to hear the exceptional talent of basschatters (and there is a lot of talent, which is one reason why I haven't entered yet as I have none!) -
Great story! Although I happened upon this story at the links on the end..... Now this is sad! (Sorry Sam, completely and utterly off topic now!) http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2013/may/25/husband-and-wife-dressed-same-35-years

From liking a band to being an active fan - when does it happen?
SpaceChick replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
My first real intro to be a fan was April 1984, I was 10 years old. Duran Duran brought out The Reflex and me and my best mate were Hooked! We played it over and over again on my record player in my bedroom, and then I bought (pocket money and doing odd jobs for my Mum to get extra cash) what had gone before. My friend decided she was going to marry Simon LeBon and I announced I was going to marry John Taylor or become a bassist (no prizes for guessing which one I actually did do and my friend is happily married to a dentist and has 2 children that I am godmother to!) I didn't actually get to see them live until about 9 years ago, and whilst I loved it I do have to say I prefer their older cheesier 80's stuff to the modern stuff. -
Great review and you guys look soooooo cool (although slightly scary )
I left mine unattended at home once and my 2 year old changed ALL the settings! That was a long evening!
Ouch!! Mine gets kept in its gig bag unless I'm using it, I am WAY too worried about anything going tits up on it.
-
That's right Lozz - there has been a disturbing increase in the incidence of liver disease among young people recently.
Lol!! Although liver disease is never a laughing matter!! On the subject of pedal boards, anyone who attempted to use mine and change the settings would be submitted to a slow and painful death!!

bass and it's effects on marriages

Blimey!!!! I hope its not a continuing trend.... The cost of a divorce would really hinder my bass expenditure -
I started listening and thought "Wow this is going to be a tough choice this month"..... Then one track completely blew me away. Don't get me wrong, I thought this month everyone's entries were outstanding, but one was just f*cking awesome!!!!

Would you be friends with the people in your band if...
SpaceChick replied to MacDaddy's topic in General Discussion
My last two bands, I can think of two people that I would be friends with.... And I am in contact with them after leaving the bands. My current band, I like everyone and we get on well, but I'm not sure they "get" my warped sense of humour, so maybe we wouldn't be friends in real life outside the band? That said, we do have fun but it's the music that holds us together, and to me that's just fine -
Don't EVER EVER knock the Ibanez SR300!!!! It's a phenomenal bass for the money!!! At this point I should say my main bass is the SR300 with the maple neck, my five string is the SR305 and I currently have a second SR300 being de-fretted for me as we speak as I want to "upgrade" my current fretless!!!!! So don't mock them, you have made (in my opinion) a very very wise purchase Oh and welcome

Shall look forward to this, I have it recorded!! I LOVE pointless

Nige, you are nuts -
Welcome I'd say join a band now..... Best way to develop.... I joined a band after 2 months! I've been playing a year, and have moved from my first band to a much better band. I honestly think that being in a band teaches you something you can never learn from lessons.... Playing with other musicians makes you really focus on what's being played and timing and dynamics. Don't get me wrong, my lessons are amazing and teach me everything I need to know about technique, theory and they are great fun, but to develop holistically, you need to play with other people too, as lets face it, the bass was never meant to be a solo instrument
