1. I don't think it's a case of having 'a singer who can sing'. I work with a couple of really good singers and when you are doing 3 or 4 sets a night for 4 months solid you don't want them to be straining much. It isn't even a matter of just dropping the key- sometimes you need to take it up a couple of keys, you need to be aware of this if you are playing that often. There are times when it doesn't sound right, but generally changing key is no big deal. Out of interest, none of the people I work with regularly ever tune down.
2. Are you trying to hold Janek to ransom?
3.
Worst keyboardist I ever played with insisted on hammering out (bad) boogiewoogie basslines as low as the keyboard would go with his left hand (regardless of the style of the song),
I didn't know that you played with Jools Holland?
4.
It depends on the rest of the band - and if it is a song that is dear to one of them. I did play in a band once where the "band leader" (he who started the band) insisted on deadly accuracy, notes, tone the lot
If the band leader wants you to play that specifically then he should write out charts. That way it will be played exactly as he wants. For me it depends on how much time I've got to learn the music. If it's short notice and you need to learn a lot of songs then I'll get the general vibe and any important lines...If I've got more time,it will usually be pretty close to original(if not spot on). If it's a regular gig, things invariably develop over time.
5. I use the MiBass 550 too. It's a great amp-it took the place of my Genz Benz. Cab wise,I'm still using my Bergantino HS410,while I'm waiting for the new MiBass cabs.
6. I don't have a copy to share, but it's in the Stanley Clarke Collection transcription book along with a bunch of other cool tunes. It's a decent book.
7. All of the work that I've got is from meeting people and then being referred to others. It's really the tried and tested way of doing it,and still the best way.

9. It's good.....I've had the print copy for about a year-it's a bunch of abridged articles from Bass Player. They do it quite often focusing on particular genres.
10.
+1 to the above! It's still the same in music shops too - whatever the bass kit, they have to launch into an epic solo slapathon.
But if they played a scale up and down the neck or something like that no one would turn around and stare at them.
Agreed! Why don't they just play Brown eyed girl or Sweet home Alabama?
Because people won't see how awesome they are.
11.
but its really stupid as is it not the whole purpose of music to create and share?
Putting aside the fact that I think tab is sh*t....music isn't just about 'create and share',a lot of it is about 'create and sell'. In the same way that record companies get pissed off when you download albums for free, publishing companies get pissed off if you aren't buying their books,Ultimately,it's the same thing,so record companies remove the offending sites. Have you ever done a covers gig and been asked for a set list by someone? It's so PRS can pay the artist royalties for the use of their songs. Even though you are 'sharing' the music, the artist still benefits.
12. I believe that he's been using Fender Custom Shop versions of his original Precision for a while. It's not uncommon for Artists to play custom versions of their signature instruments.
13.
Time, mainly. I used tab loads last year when in a covers band. I don't have the time to work it out by ear, I have the trappings of a full time job, kids etc. Although I can't see how lecturing someone on 'learn yourself by ear' is pertinent to the thread. And surely it's obvious who writes tabs, people who learn songs by ear. Given that most of it's wrong then, learning by ear can't be as accurate as it's cracked up to be.
No....it means that certain people haven't trained their ear well enough. Most of those that have trained their ear well don't write tabs on the internet. Learning by ear is a relevant point because I get the impression that some people think it's a bummer that the tabs have been removed-but if you spend 5 minutes searching for a (dodgy) tab online, that's 5 minutes that you could have spent learning by ear.Even if it's only 4 bars, you are improving your ear so that next time you might be able to 8 bars in the same time..it's all an improvement. Feeder songs aren't that difficult..they'd be a good starting point to get your ear together.
14.
This bugs me. (edit)
So......you're not a fan then?
15. It's all because they aren't actually reviewing instruments...they are hoping that people will see them and comment saying how immensely awesome they are and try and become famous for it. This isn't limited to reviews-it also includes 'lessons' and play alongs. It's worked for a few people.
16. The specs are now on the Fender site http://www.fender.com/en-GB/products/foofighters/models.php/?prodNo=0142500309 Yeah.....so.....err....it's another P-Bass
17. I've got no problem with people playing an instrument like that if they want, but for me it always seems a little.....pointless (?). No disrespect to Stu,but I was expecting something more impressive. He wasn't playing anything that I haven't heard played way better on 4,5 or 6 strings-with the exception of a wider range. In fairness,he plays better in his other videos, where he's playing 4 or 5 string basses, but the 10 string just seems like a very expensive 'novelty' instrument.
18. He's on the new Lee Ritenour album and plays great as usual.Ace player. (In fact, everyone should check out the new Ritenour album 'Rhythm Sessions'...As well as Davis,it also has bass work by Marcus,Tal,McBride,Stanley,East and Chuck Berghofer. It's a killer album with all star players.)
19. Good stuff...I've got both those amps (only the miBass 550). Love 'em.
20. Just out of interest, while many people are happy to see a singer perform with all of the music on track, how many would be satisfied to see a band perform with all of the vocals on track?
21.
Why would you need to mute strings you aren't plucking..?? that is just sloppy playing. I can understand muting the string you are attacking but that is what the LH is for
It's not sloppy playing to need mute the strings. It's not uncommon to get sympathetic vibrations from the lower strings, and if you are playing on the upper strings how are you going to mute them with the left hand? You need to use the right hand to do this. Muting of the strings should come from both hands, depending on what and where you are playing. But the need to mute the strings you aren't playing isn't due to sloppy playing....I certainly wouldn't call Jaco or Patitucci sloppy and they mute with the right hand all the time.
22.
I don't currently own a car
Maybe the money would be better off being spent there?....especially as you already have a decent amp. There is no point having cool gear if you have no way of getting to gigs-it's no fun relying on other people for lifts (for either party). I know that's not a fun, gear based answer that you want, but I think it's a big thing.
23. Check out the Michel Colombier album 'Dreamland'-it's really cool. Obviously listen to Pat Metheney's album 'Bright Size Life' for some great earlier Jaco. '4am' off Herbie Hancock's 'Mr Hands' album is great. One of my favourite Jaco performances is on the track 'Mood Swings' on Mike Stern's 'Upside Downside' album.
24. I very rarely use the floating thumb technique...My thumb is usually anchored lightly on on the string below where I'm playing. It's anchored but moving. I find that I can mute the strings easier that way, because I use my thumb along with my ring and little fingers to mute (similar to Patitucci).
25.
I'd also add Aaron Mills (Cameo and Outkast bassist, created some very funky basslines),
Totally...I'm digging his line on Outkast's 'Miss Jackson' at the moment. If we are going in that direction I think we can add Preston Crump and LaMarquis Jefferson (dig his line on TLC's 'Waterfalls').
