Much of the traditional DB sound comes from the high action, which means more effort, and if you do not start with the right fingering and wrist positions, you can cause serious tendon damage quite quickly. David
+lots You are waaaay better off having a couple of lessons before you get into bad habits rather than after.
2.
At a heavy rock gig I played a load of Rush and Iron maiden licks at soundcheck - no one noticed. At a classic rock covers gig I slipped the solo from Jethro Tull's Bouree into my solo - no one noticed. At a covers gig someone kept shouting out for some Bee Gees. Later in the set I slipped in the riff from Stayin' alive - he didn't notice. On the 20th anniversary of Jaco's death, I sneaked lots of Jaco licks into the set - no one noticed. Shortly after George Harrison's death, I slipped the melody from Here comes the sun into a song - no one noticed.
Bear in mind that half of the songs you mention would be relatively unknown to most people. Only a Bass player would recognise the Jaco or Maiden licks ( i wouldn't know the Maiden licks),and most people don't know 'Bouree' unless they are big Tull fans. Maybe some people did notice but weren't impressed? If you are hoping to get kudos for playing a line which may or may not fit, then you are doing something wrong. If you do a good job and play well people will notice. Sure,it's a nice ego boost when audience members give you compliments-but it's not as good as when the band leader hands you your money and calls the next day to fill your diary.
3. I've had a Crafter for a while.....it's really cool, but I've got my eye on the new Fender Kingman.
4. I got screwed over by the Manchester store,so will avoid them all in future.
5. Ibanez Soundgear basses are great instruments. Their necks are really slim, which can be good or bad depending on preference, but I think they are comfortable to play. ......They also use punctuation.
6. 'Forget me nots' by Patrice Rushen. 'Ready' Freddie Washington grooving like nobody's business. 'Thank You(Falettinme be mice elf again)' by Sly and the Family Stone. Larry Graham oh...and 'Hair' by Graham Central Station. Them 3 are sweeeet grooves.
7.
I like fabric covered cables like that. They don't tangle so much. Bass tone ...Shmone. Anyone else do nice ones?
Ahem..........Spectraflex. Shameless endorsee plug over.
8.
I keep telling myself I'll practice more, but I think you learn much more by playing gigs.
You learn different things on gigs. What you study in the practise room should eventually come out in your playing. Fundamentals are learnt by practising. Application is learnt on gigs.
9. It's easy to misunderstand that quote. The fact is that Herbie practised and studied for years before saying that, and he can now approach things in a different way because his grasp of the fundamentals is so solid. He's paid his dues both on stage and in the woodshed. I understand where he's coming from,but-and this is the important thing-he is Herbie Hancock. Jaco said in his video that most of his practise is without the bass in his hands, and a load of players took it the wrong way. He had spent so long with the instrument previously that he knew exactly how it worked and could concentrate on music. Only when you have such a solid grasp on the fundamentals of music, and your chosen instrument, can you start to approach it in this way.
10. I only have one word to say Dick. Good job to the mods for sorting it out sharpish.

Take a look at the Genz Benz Shuttle series-they're great. Acoustic Image make a great amp that is perfect for upright. If you are set on an Ampeg,I've seen the B200r(I think) Rocket bass combo used for doubling. Having said that,I've used a Roland cube for ages and it's been fine.
12.
Quite possibly. I've just had a nose around the local Guernsey new sites and I can't find anything about a suicide or the name Jimmy/James Preston.
I did that too
13. I've used the Simandl method for a long time in the lower positions. I can use one finger per fret over the whole board, but prefer to use 1-2-4 in the lower positions (upto the 5th fret) as it puts less strain on my hand. As Jennifer said, there are lines-like the 'box' pattern-which lend themselves to using a 1-2-4 fingering. It is not essential to keep strict fingering at all times. Look at a player like Tom Kennedy-he's got a great left hand technique with a finger per fret method, yet when he's reading a chart in lower positions he naturally reverts to a 1-2-4 fingering. There is no point in forcing a finger per fret method-if it causes your hand to ache, don't do it. Use the Simandl style and use your thumb to pivot.
14. It's worth trying to play with your thumb-or even a thumb pick.
15.
I understand that when you're talking about pub covers bands, but as a musician playing my own stuff in gig venues, I wanna be louder than hell.
The difference being...........?
16. First gigging rig? That'll be a Tanglewood Rebel (not the 4k-the old style with painted neck and headstock and slimmer body) into a Trace Elliot Commando 100. Currently I'm using a Genz Benz Neo-Pak into a Bergantino HS410 with a choice of Basses-usually a Shuker Singlecut 5 at the moment. .....And I've still got that Tanglewood.
17.
Allo Phil! I've no idea - although I've got an interview with him in Bassist mag somewhere - from around '96 I think! So yes, I have heard of him! Cheers m8. Nick
I remember getting annoyed with that issue because he was on the cover instead of Les Claypool.
18. Hey Which bit of the 'fine' county are you from?
19.
Ooooh, Sadowsky... Zach
Ooooh, Valenti...
20. It's a shame that you ruled out Ibanez because both the BTB and Soundgear 6 strings are really nice.
21. I had one for a bit,but didn't overly like it. It didn't have enough of a sweep range for me.
22.
It's an instrument cable, Jim, but not as we know it... http://www.nevadamusic.co.uk/Bass-Guitars/...1637/p7742.aspx Sorry if this has been mentioned before, but how the hell can a cable be bass specific? ...and is it really worth £30?!
I don't know if the Bass specific thing matters (it usually means that they colour the tone slightly),but I don't think £30 is expensive. If you spend a lot on your equipment,it's worth buying some decent cables.
23. To be honest,I really didn't like that video. I thought the 'groove' was really quite weak.
24. I've got to agree with Bilbo on the playing in the dark thing-it's rubbish. Why would you choose to limit one of your senses? Like I've said before,if you want to avoid looking at the 'board (on either fretted or fretless) put a chart in front of you and read it. It's much more beneficial to your playing. Familiarity of the 'board will come naturally with practise. I play a lined fretless and have noticed that by playing right on the line you will be out of tune. In the lower positions you should be slightly in front of the line, while high up the neck you should be slightly behind.
25.
Thinner pick, faster pace! I have done this before and you can get upto some very fast speeds. Awesome fun and once you pair it with a fast fretting hand it looks impressive. Thicker pick, more meaty tone but difficult to go incredibly fast.
I can't get any speed with a thin pick.I find them much to floppy. When I use a pick I go for either Dunlop 1.something(the purple/reddish ones) or Stubbys. Although I really like using the Ibanez Steve Vai models too. I find that I can get more speed and better tone from a heavier pick.Using a pick while palm muting gives a great sound.
