1. To my eyes it looks like Lake Placid Blue. I bought an MIM bass in the late 90s and I remember LPB being an option. I went with Midnight Blue though Either way it's a nice colour and a real bargain!
 2.
Jimmy's reply: http://www.talkbass....ml#post14719935
Worst attempt at damage limitation I've ever seen. My favourite quote of the thread: "....the professional luthier's attempt to reverse blame and his complete disregard for paragraph structure don't do him any favors, imo."
 3.
When I was a kid my Dad always nagged me to polish my shoes and my Mum nagged me not to drag them as I walked. Nobody taught me to scuff the toes and scrape round the heels just in case I might catch on a kerb etc. So from the cradle, relic-ing my gear isn't what I was brought up to do. I can understand Jaco having a relic instrument, he played well and well and he looked a mess. So we can imagine him playing that bass morning, noon and night. I play crap. So me having a relic bass would look like I got it at a boot sale and I don't give a sh1t. That's just not me.
Yes, but do wear faded jeans for example? I don't think there are too mnay brands/styles of jeans being sold these days that do not have the pre-washed/worn look. It a personal reference for people IMO. At first glance the finish on the Strat looks like it's is made of reptile skin. Re the Rory Gallagher one (I haven't managed to watch that vid yet), I read that although it was at one point stolen and then recoved outside in a wet ditch somwwhere, the aging is predominantly due to long term wear and tear and presumably acidic sweat.
 4. When bored and thinking about this I think the only part that this and a 57 AVRI would have in common is the string tree! How sad am I?!
 5. The seller doesn't have much of a response to accusations of misleading so if he's been advised of the error and hasn't bothered to change anything. As already said by others, I'm sure the price will at least double.
 6. Hi John, I hope all is well. As you said, it's definitely being advertised as something in ain't. Going by the description, it seems to be more due to ignorance than anything else. IMO it could be good value if the price stays realistic, but I'd hate to think somebody could get duped by this. I guess most of us would expect to pay a bit more for a 1996 '57 AVRI than an Am Std. It is nice though, isn't it? I don't recall seeing a Sonic Blue Am Std before. I could be tempted myself
 7. Cellulose thinner removes the nitro finish. Good for speeding up the natural wearing process.
 8.
Does a yes from a non-DB player count? If it does, that's two of us who'd love to hear about your experience.
Add another non-DB player who someday plans to one day buy one...space permitting!
 9.
Finally took some decent photos of my custom '57:
That's fantastic looking (and sounding I'm sure) Can I ask where you got the neck and body done? Paddy
 10.
Thanks. I do like your 2 P-basses, I'm ooming and arring on whether to start on a 59 P-Bass next and as you say and I've experienced on my last build, it's getting the period parts at a reasonable price and avoiding imports If you can (duty). I was thinking of Olympic white with gold scratch plate and maple fretboard for my 59, but then I do like your fiesta red one but with a tort scratch plate (like Pino's).
Yep, definitely something fulfilling about a diy job. I might change to a tort pickguard too, but I really like mint on any of those 60's custom colours. Good luck with your next one!
 11.
Here's my Jamerson 62 tribute, all Fender parts apart from the body (alder) and scratch plate and all period correct, even the screws are all nickel. Couldn't afford an all parts neck so settled for a Mighty Mite one, so not 100% correct but plays and sounds fantastic especially with the La Bella flats.
Nice!! You really can't beat that classic look.
 12.
Can you tell us a bit about these two beauties please ?
Hi, yes no problem, but prepare to be bored Both are basses I put together over the last while. Technically bitsas, although it pains me to say that as it's been a long process sourcing the best and most vintage-correct parts I could get. These are about substance as much as looks. The Fiesta Red is based on a '62 P Bass - nitro finish alder body from a MIM Roadworn, nitro finish AVRI slab neck from 1988 (hence the stupid location of the decal), vintage reissue bridge, reverse tuners, Fender 62 reissue pickups, mint green pickguard, period correct repro ceramic capacitor, and cloth covered wiring all put together as per the correct '62 spec. The only thing I might do with this is get a custom made and completely period correct neck with clay dots, correct spacing etc. The black one is based on a '57 P Bass - nitro finish alder body from a Highway 1, nitro finish MIM roadworn neck, vintage reissue bridge, reverse tuners, SD Antiquity pickups with the raised 'A' poles, gold anodized pickguard, period correct repro chiclett capacitor, and cloth covered wiring all put together as per the correct '62 spec. As I said in another thread, the hardest thing to source (for an obsessive like myself at least) was the proper pickup covers. A few weeks ago I saw the Stratosphere had bridge and pickup covers from a 58 and 63 AVRI for auction, and I managed to win all four pieces. The bridge covers have the mutes glued into them already, which is a nice touch, although restricitive if you don't like the muted sound. The only reason I started these is that I wanted a Fiesta Red AVRI and they're really hard to find. Although one did come up on ebay in the middle of this project, I was happier with how these were going. There's also a satisfying feeling of getting the sounds I wanted from the sum of all the parts at a significantly cheaper cost than the production models. It also stops me making impulse buys on the for sale section here
 13.
What a pleasing looking pair Paddy.
Thanks Gary. I've changed lots of things on them since we originally spoke, but I think they're finally done now! Next I want to do a '59 P Bass in a yellowed Olympic White with a rosewood board and gold pickguard and a '63 P Bass in Old Lake Placid Blue with a rosewood board and mint pickguard. I also want a fretless P Bass in the near future, so they might take a while. Edit...for mobile-related typos!

 16. Can you please add DW Guitars in Maidstone to the list? Dave's phone number is 01622691087. He doesn't seem to have a website (old school!) but I found his details on a google search and the comments about him were good. I brought a knackered reissue P Bass neck to him that I stupidly won in an ebay auction. When I say knackered, I mean it was basically unplayable. Dave did a fantastic job on setting it up and it's now playing great. I couldn't recommend him highly enough, and a great bloke to deal with too. I was chatting to him afterwards and he said he also makes custom guitars and basses. I'm defintiely going to get him to do a vintage-correct P bass neck for me soon.
 17.
Yep, they're part of the Classic series - a P and a J with nitro.
I think, for the P bass at least, it's just in black though isn't it? I would have the thought the 2tsb and fiesta red ones were the biggest sellers in the range, and therefore deserved the nitro finish.
 18.
The newer MIM Classic series have a nitro finish.
There's a relatively new nitro-finished MIM P Bass called the 50's P Bass Laquer. It's only available in black but comes with a tweed case. The other non-worn 50's Classics do not have a nitro finish.
 19.
My 1973 precision has the squared off cover, so looks like we're narrowing down the change to mid-late 1970s.
Thanks for confirming. I thought they may have been phased out int he mid 60's and that there might have been a transition period. You've proven that not to be the case.
Hiya. My 2cents. Attached is a pic of my '64P when i bought it. It has since been restored to 3-colour Sunburst and refretted. All was original except for the paint job, so it should give you an idea of the covers. If need be I can get some better shots when I get home tonight if this doesn't answer your question. I hope it helps.
Hi. Thanks for posting the pic. That's bass really is lovely looking? Is that the original blonde/black tolex case too? I've since received the '63 reissue pickup cover, and it looks a lot closer to your one than the one I bought that purported to be from 1964. I've returned that one, although the seller at no point conceeded that they had incorrectly advertised it.
 20. I couldn't tell you what the merits of each wood are, although I'm sure many here can and will. Personally my preference is always alder, but just because the originals I like were made from this. From what I've seen recently, swamp ash generally seems to be the easiest and cheapest to buy, from the likes of allparts.
 21.
Well, there's a large element of personal preference in it. Some people rather like the higher tension of La Bella flats (although they are not particularly high tension). Other people like the lower tension of TIs. Either way you can change the feel of the string under your fingers (that's compliance by the way not tension, the tension does not change) by where you play with your right hand - over the end of the fingerboard for more compliance or over the pickup or close to the bridge for less compliance. The tension however stays the same as long as the string is tuned to the same pitch. Lower tension does not cause clank unless your bass is not set up properly and/or you are digging in too much. Different strings have different tones - at least in a loose sense - but there is no direct link between tension and tone.
Cool. Thanks for the informative response. I'll take some time to digest this properly. I'm just back from leaving a bass at a luthier (DW Guitars) where I got some interesting facts about the tension differences between flatwounds and roundwounds. Interesting stuff. To the OP, sorry for hijacking the thread!
 22.
Gauge alone is no guarantor of tension one way or another.
Can I ask a stupid question re tension? Does tension largely affect playability or are there major sound differences too? It's been said above that the TI flats are low tension and possibly looser to play. Does that add clank or excessive noise to the sound? I forked out for La Bella flats and had to change them after a few days due to what I found to be excessive tension. I thought a dogdy neck might be the problem, but they weren't a whole lot better on a perfect neck either.

 24.
Of course it's for MIJ (no cutout for truss rod). Just made this mistake recently .... need MIA
They're not supposed to have the cut out for the truss rod bump These are from reissues; Classic 50's, '57 RI and '58RI, and none of these have the cut out because they all have the vintage style truss rod adjuster, i.e. the neck has to come off. AFAIK no MIJ reissues have gold pickguards and I believe these are all USA made regardless of what bass they came on. Hope this helps.
