Thanks for the detailed response...I might just tell her to use it at home though No, I'll give this a try during the week and see how I get on. I have a work blackberry that always has connection anywhere (unlike my personal phone plan which just covers Ireland)....hopefully I can link that to the Nexus 7 too!
By the way, if you have a smartphone you can just enable wireless tethering to share it's data connection with the tablet. This is the reason they opted to make it cheaper without its own 3G since most people already own a phone with a data plan these days!
I got the wife one of these for Christmas. Hope do I go about enabling wireless tethering?
All things considered, yes. But as I noted earlier there does appear to have been a shift in opinion on this matter, and in other threads others have commented that the forum seems to be less supportive than before. All inevitable as the forum grows I suppose. I can't help but think of talkbass, where there is a community of long standing members with high post counts. There are also a seemingly endless amount of newer members who like to disparage and deride others over the internet. The mods to their credit do try to keep on top of things, but inevitably this has led to a lot of rules and an outright banning of certain topics. I know this has exercised the minds of the mods on here, but I can't help but wonder if BC will end up going the same route.
Funny that....on talkbass a find a lot the high posters seem to post their opinions as fact and be almost revered by the newbies. BC is an altogether better place in my opinion....speaking as a relative newbie myself of course. -
This is really important. If you haven't already you should contact the seller with this information and inform him that if you don't have your goods within x days you will be disputing the payment. And definitely *do* open the dispute before the 30 days if you haven't received the goods, don't be put off by anything the seller has to say. If the goods subsequently arrive then you can resolve the dispute but if you wait you are going to have a real headache getting your money back. Good luck with it and sorry to hear you've had a bad experience buying on here.
Unfortunately the buyer has since confirmed the deal was done as a paypal 'gift', so no come-back on that side. The seller being online this week pretty much rules out the chance of him being incapacitated for one reason or another. Thankfully not the norm for BC, so I hope it gets resolved soon. -
Plus the euro is in the toilet...good for the majority on here but not for me!
I agree almost completely, except for the paypal gift bit. Paypal will just put their %s up to cover the costs of dishonest gifting. So we all pay in the end. If someone doesn't want to pay the paypal fees, they should supply their bank account details and use BACS. I refuse to use the gift option these days, although I have a couple of times in the past at the seller's request. Never again.
That's an interesting point re re PayPal hiking up their fees.....I hadn't thought of it like that before. I only learnt of the paypal gift option on BC as it happens, and wouldn't trust using it outside of BC. I can totally see how the gift option exposes both buyer and seller though. Unfortunately, the bank transfer option is a little more complicated when outside of the UK, but probably not insurmountable. I suppose the same level of trust is required there too. -
Don't ever, ever, pay by PayPal gift. It's only for cash gifts. You have no comeback at all (from PayPal).
In principle I completely agree, but everything I've bought and sold on BC has been via PayPal gift . I know it's risky, but all the people I've bought from were long established members, had lots of posts and all had good feedback. All were great to deal with. I haven't nor won't buy off the people who join (or at least appear to join) BC just to flog something. They may be genuine, but I think the BC marketplace is built on a community spirit that involves building trust with other members. Having said all this, buying basses or amps of any real value are probably the only things I'd really want the protection of PayPal for. I hope the this was all a misunderstanding and that the OP gets sorted, but I do agree with the previous posters.....once money has exchanged hands the seller has a responsibility to live up to their part of the bargain come hell or high water. There are very few excuses that would be acceptable in this particular case. -
I paid via PayPal, but at this stage I'd rather know the seller is OK than just assume he's a chancer.
That's very understanding of you, but the fact that 12 days after the purchase you had corrrspondence but no bass is a worry. Of course I don't know the content of the mesage, but presuming you paid by paypal for a sale you might only have 30 days in which to open a dispute. I'd bear that in mind. I hope you get sorted. -
On a slightly related note.... I have a bass playing friend who was born on the day Jamerson died. I always think he might be JJ reincarnate , although he's a singer/songwriter more than anything!
@pobrien_ie Possibly the recorded version is Babbitt, doesnt mean that the book is wrong about Jamerson doing lots of takes. Smokey and Norman, Whitfield were such control freaks that hey may have put a Babbitt track on after jamerson did those takes because they didnt like what he did.. He did have a free hand but he did also have a serious temper and the drink didnt help it. Babbitt said he went to question the residuals he was getting and found contracts for tracks that he knew he had played on, but made out to other people, so I dont think even the players themselves know for certain. The residuals wer paid on the basis of these contracts, many of which were written out after the fact. They were known as "mock contracts"
Yeah fair point. I have the book too, but don't remember tears of a clown being mentioned. Good reason to read it again I suppose. I know Ed Friedland's R&B bass book mentions it as a Jamerson track too.

Sorry to hear that. Unfortunately I don't think there's anything a moderator can do to help. I think the T's and C's clearly state BC is not responsible. Did you use paypal or anything else that might have offered you some protection? -
Yeah it was pretty lax back then, probably why the Carol Kaye claims can't be 100% discounted. I'm fairly sure that it's been pretty much agreed since that it's Babbitt though. Even the Jamerson tribute site (bassland I think) doesn't credit it to Jamerson. I'm no expert on their styles, but that would be a very restrained and structured bassline for Jamerson. Even the basic lines he played had some interesting parts. That's not disrespecting the bass line of Babbitt though..it's exactly what the song needs. And back to the track, What's Going On, was that the one he played while drunk and lying flat on his back?!
-
Apparently he had to do about 60 takes of years of a clown, in order to satisfy the producers
I'm not sure about that. That track had Bob Babbitt on bass.....unless that's the reason why!! Also from what I've read he was pretty untouchable and got little or no grief from anybody in the early days.

Thanks! Sorry for hijacking the thread! As you were.....
I,ve played it in the past on Ricky,t-bird,musicman and a P doesn,t really matter just get the vibe.
This. Skynyrd aren't really a band I've ever focused on trying to emulate the bass sound too much. I think it's just a good rock sound with a great groove. Plus if you're doing the whole 2 to 3 guitar thing the challenge will just be to get a nice sound that can be heard in the mix. It's also very likely that Ed King was playing bass on the recorded version.
DV247 have them in the £800 region last time i looked BSB
Cool. Any idea if it's been discontinued though? It would be more of a luxury / nostalgia buy tbh!

I think Leon Wilkeson mainly used a pick on Jazzes and Thunderbirds. Could be wong though. A cool player though and played some great lines.
And everyone else will find this condescending!
....and (IMO) elitist and not in keeping with what BC is about.

Not stocked by Thomann anymore. Anybody know if they've been discontinued?
So, a question for those Basschatters who have made a YouTube bass video. Have you received any offers of musical work or been asked to join a band as a result of it?
He might not be a basschatter, but it looks like the Marlowe DK guy has done ok for himself...considering he has his own Sandberg signature series bass. Re the theme this thread has taken on - each to their own....like it, don't like it...life's too short.
Is that 'selling'? Difficult to know. New word for every circumstance on a daily basis these days. I'm so old, you see.
Yes selling AFAIK, e.g. 'January Blow Out'
Hey Paddy, I just measured the nut on my AV '62 P & it's 1.765" or 44.83mm, so a little over the stated 1&3/4" even! Cheerz, John
Hi John! Interesting that the stated figures aren't even quite right. I just thought it looked a bit strange to not see the usual 1.75, 1.625, 1.5 etc I really like the look of all the Precisions, but the Sonic Blue really does it for me. It's great to see them trying to move more towards the vintage correct specs...the clay dots being a welcome touch. I do remember a fellow BC'er telling me that the original AVRI's were based off vintage basses they bought, whereas the JV's were built of the blue prints! I suppose there were so many variations back in the day it might be hard to say what was standard. I also saw that Thomann have slightly reduced the prices on the current AVRI's...might be a good time to nab one of them too.
I still want to know if the P comes with the covers already fitted. From the description in the specs it looks as if they are already screwed on. Mind you, it's all academic as I can't afford one anyway. However, who knows what the future may bring.
Yeah according to the description in looks like they're already mounted. Although it wouldn't bother me, I'd imagine a lot of people might not like the bridge cover and therefore might not like the 2 holes if they do remove it.
Better than that, they're said to be period correct - Custom Shop one's were merely generic. Oh yes! It’s mentioned on a separate page overviewing the series, to quote: “The finishes on most new American Vintage guitars and basses consist of three coats: sealer, color and a topcoat, all of which are 100-percent nitrocellulose lacquer and are hence quite thin. This is a vintage-style finish treatment that lets an instrument "breathe" with a more natural resonance since it doesn't "constrain" the instrument's body as much as thicker and more confining modern finishes.” Here: http://www.fender.com/en-GB/series/american-vintage/#
Cool..thanks for the link. Did anyone notice the ever so slightly odd nut width sizes on both Precisions? Is that period-correct too? I still think it's a shame the '57 and '62 are gone.
