Sean's Feedback

Sean braved the rain and the M25 to come and collect Valenti #5 from me this morning. Had a nice chat whilst he got to grips with the one that got away. Easy sale, pleasure doing business. I hope you enjoy the bass!
3. This is a brilliant and truly unique bass; problem is I just don’t use it enough to justify keeping it. It’s credentials demand that it goes out and earns its living so with regret I offer up my Valenti P. It’s a killer bass. Unbelievable warmth and fatness with sparkling highs when using the onboard pre amp, very traditional and Fendery in passive mode. It has probably the best fit and finish of any bass I have ever owned (and I’ve owned a few). It’s intonation is spot on, unlike all my Fenders! The spec below speaks for itself. Spec: Swamp Ash Body (one piece!) Transparent Blue Finish Maple neck with Maple fretboard Satin Finish on neck Nordstrand NP4 Precision Pickup Aguilar OBP-1 preamp (18V battery access via rear plate.) Controls: - Volume, - VTC tone - works in Passive and Active modes as a kind of master tone control. This effectively retains the "two knob" simplicity of a P bass but with other options rather than just a simple treble cut. - Active/Passive Push/pull on the VTC knob - Stacked bass and treble boost Hipshot HB-1 Tuning Keys Hipshot D-tuner Gotoh Quick Release Bridge Black Pearl Pickguard Black Hardware The nut is 44mm or 1 3/4" It has quite a chunky neck and has become nicknamed ‘The Barge’ amongst my bass player mates. Weighs about 4.75 kilos It has quite a history both on Basschat and Talkbass: Original for sale thread: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/45631-sold-valenti-5-super-p/page__p__457189__hl__valenti%20precision__fromsearch__1#entry457189 Previous for sale thread: http://basschat.co.u...__fromsearch__1 TB review: http://www.talkbass....houghts-169939/ Another TB review: http://www.talkbass....-review-174844/ Valenti blog info: http://valentibasses5.blogspot.co.uk/ Comes with a tatty gigbag and black pickup cover. I really don’t want to post it, so it’d be collection only I’m afraid Looking for the £600 I paid for it as it’s in identical condition to the day I bought it. Tradewise, I would consider a Rickenbacker 4003, but it'd have to be post 2006 (for the VTC). Obviously with cash adjustment your way. I might be swayed by alternatives, try me!
4. Just bought this from Geofio two weeks ago, liked it so much that I immediately got an X3 live which is more practical for me. This kidney bean version is now surplus to my requirements. Mint condition, boxed with original manuals, software CD, USB cable, box etc. Looking for £175 posted. *edit - £150* Pics to follow.
5. Really want one of these. If only you were closer I'd have that. Have a bump anyway.
6.
I'd guess it weighs in around 25kg. I'm sure it's one of the older ones.
Specs: 2 x 10" woofers, 200 w each 2 x 5" phase plugged mid - treble speakers (same as was used in the bright box) (total cab rating is 300 Watt 8 Ohms) About 70 lb / 32kg, built in 1990's Was designed to be used at a top for 15" subs. Can be used as stand alone. A great cab, very expensive too when released.
7. Cheers for the info ratman, I was tempted to get a second 2103x as I have recently repaired one, don't think I can justify another cab at the moment though. If anyone fancies an easy fix, here is my thread: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/175298-trace-elliot-replacement-10-celestions/page__p__1638974__hl__2103x__fromsearch__1#entry1638974 Noir
8. I want an X3 Live and have an Bass POD XT Live, hmmm Maybe there could be a deal cut here?
9. Cheers again for your respective input. On closer inspection it seems that with either pot set to maximum, turning the other only really kicks in the pickup at about 90 - 95%. I'm using two 250k CTS pots and a .047 Orange drop cap.
10.
NOT NECESSARILY OUT OF PHASE Impedance drop leading to volume drop when full on in a VVT configuration is common to all 2-pickup basses. Yes, you can switch the wires on the J bridge pickup, and it does seem to have helped a little bit, but it's not a perfect solution, especially since the J is a single coil and the P is effectively a humbucker. So with both on, one coil of the P pickup is getting reinforced while the other is not, resulting in an imperfect setup. Two solutions: 1) Get a humbucking J bridge unit to match the P, like a DiMarzio UltraJazz or similar, and/or 2) put a .01 capacitor inline from the hot lead of the bridge pickup to the wiper on its volume pot in conventional VVT wiring. There's not much fundamental signal coming out of the bridge pickup anyway, and this will help with the impedance drop/comb filtering issues.
Thanks for the info iiipopes, I was thinking of eventually getting a Seymour Duncan STK-J2b to go with the SD Quarter Pounder that is in there. I'll stick a .01 cap in there until then. The bass sounds a lot better having reversed the bridge pickups wires, but there is still some odd things happening just before the pot is set to maximum.
Try www.thomann.de/gb
Can't see anything on there that fits the bill, closest thing I can find is: http://www.allparts.uk.com/online-shop/guitar-bass-parts/electronics/250k-pots/stacked-concentric-pot-250k250k-metric-p-4072.html or these and wire the volume to the 500k: http://www.allparts.uk.com/online-shop/guitar-bass-parts/electronics/miscellaneous-pots/control-concentric-250k500k-audio-solid-shaft-p-4566.html
11. Cheers guys, that sorted it. I will wire it with the blend eventually, but for now I'll stick with the Jazz config. My next issue it to source a dual concentric pot for volume and tone, the originals are 1M and have extremely long shafts. Does anyone know where I can get a 250k stacked pot with a long shaft?
12. Are all four of the speakers blown in the 2103x? and whereabout in north London are you?
13. Hi bremen, Thanks for the reply.
Your pickups are out of phase. Swap the wires on one of them.
Forgive my ignorance, do you mean swap the locations of the black and white wires coming off the pickup?
14. I've recently become the proud owner of a Fender Cowpoke. It originally had stacked vol/blend and treble/bass controls along with an onboard active preamp. I'd like to rewire it as a passive P/J. Having tried a few configurations that lead to loud hum, I finally settled on this: http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wiring-diagrams/schematics.php?schematic=std_jazz_bass Which seems to work great (no hum) but when I roll up the volume pots to about 90% I get a massive volume drop off and lose all the low end. Furthermore if I have any blend of the two pickups I seem to get odd results, the only time I get what I'm expecting is with each pickup soloed. I'm tempted to go for Vol/blend/tone instead: http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wiring-diagrams/schematics.php?schematic=p_j_bass_blend would that cure my issues? all help gratefully received.
15. Popped round to see Mark yesterday and purchased his Cowpoke P bass. Had a nice chat, whilst he explained the basses history for me since he has had it. Added a few extras like pots and stuff to do it up, and his advice all for free. Looking forward to getting the soldering iron warmed up to pacify the poke. Cheers again Mark
16. Just bought his POD X3. Easy deal, arrived very promptly. Top man. Cheers again George!

18. Thats well funny! did you make it?
19.
They must have changed it then. Originally they said no polytune in bass mode.
Perhaps thats why it won't track well for me then? it's somewhat of a gimmick though, I bought it for the size more than anything.
