1.
I personally had two 50th birthday parties last year
Doesn't that make you 100? Did you get a birthday telegram?
2. A Hofner S7B like this http://www.vintagehofner.co.uk/hofner/basses/bas26.html Bought mine in 83 and still going strong (the pic isn't of mine but it looks just like it).
3. Gator bags look like the thing I need-just got to find the Aussie importer now...
4. I thought of that but the downside of course is that it seriously increases the bulk and so the amount of weight my poor back has to cope with!
5. Well, the gig bag that came with my Trace Elliot AH200 about 17 years ago has finally gone to gig-bag-heaven, so I need a replacement. Has anyone else found a suitable alternative that I could buy off-the-shelf?
6. My Holden Commodore wagon easily fits all my gear in with space also for the essential "back home post-gig relaxing Shiraz" facility!
7.
The more info you put in a post, the more you leave out.
What a ridiculous statement! Is the converse true? If you post a message that's blank, have you said everything you need about the (unstated) topic?
8. 'It's now very common to hear people say, "I'm rather offended by that", as if that gives them certain rights. It's no more than a whine. It has no meaning, it has no purpose, it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. "I'm offended by that." Well, so f***ing what?' —Stephen Fry
9.
Ok, so this might turn into a bit of a long one but...... I play bass in a really good (and always busy corporate function band) - people can work out for themselves whether we're any good or not - but we are and I'm privileged to play with a group of awesome musicians who are also really close friends. We started over 12 years ago as 6th formers playing 'classics' in pubs for fun - you know, Hendrix, Free, Cream, Zeppelin etc Things progressed to the point where we've been playing stadiums for large sports events and large corporate stuff - in the last 3 years we've done Wembley Stadium, Millennium Stadium, Old Trafford, Elland Road, The Trafford Centre, Murrayfield - all sorts really. Been abroad loads, big events for people like Unilever, O2, Yell.com - you name it....we're off to the Middle East in the NY and have also been backing band for James Corden and Diana Vickers for gigs. We must be doing something right! Anyway, a guy I knew from school plays guitar and recently has been in touch and has been to see us at a few events. He plays guitar in your typical 'pub rock' band - they're ok, nothing special - just like 100 pub bands in each town. He's ok but nowhere near as good as the guys in my band. Anyway - the first time he came to see us he asked if he could join us. We pointed out that (A) No, we didn't need / want him (we have 2 great guitarists who between them can play everything and anything should the need arise) and ( see point A. We did a short notice gig on the weekend at a local pub as a short notice favor and he found out and txt to ask if he could jam with us for a few songs. To be honest, the thought of it filled me with dread as I've heard him a few times and it's bad. I mean, he can play ok, but it's so unmusical, no style, no taste. Just notes, bad sound and style - no consideration for the song or music. I txt back to say we weren't really playing anything suitable to 'jam' to in the sense of what he was suggesting - we did lots of soul, Motown etc and it would have just ruined great songs! Anyway, he was there at the gig - with a face on him like he was there to 'run the rule' - I was laughing inside as we were awesome and played some cool stuff like "What's going on", a great version of "Going Down" "I'm a Mover" and all sorts. He came over after and said how great it was and complimented me and the drummer etc and said "You need a lead guitarist". I pointed out that we had 2 awesome musicians on guitar and he was all "they're 'just' rhythm players". They're not - One is like a cross between Paul Kossoff (who incidentally this lad didn't know even though his bad pub band play some free) and Robbie Robertson and the other is some sort of musical genius who sings like Sam Cooke, plays guitar like Hendrix and plays keys like Dr John! Both though play with style, taste and are musical! This 'lad' was telling me how he could have put a 'buring solo" in "Superstition" - I replied "why", it doesn't have a wa***ng guitar in it. If Stevie Wonder wanted one he'd have written one. He said he could put solo's in our set to make it better. I told him people didn't like that and he'd spoil the songs. He was going on about Stevie Ray Vaughan and Joe Bonawhatever - each to their own, but don't really do too much for me, though I appreciate that they were / are awesome players. Plus, this lad is nowhere near those 2 mentioned - they have their own styles = he doesn't. I ended up walking away as I was about to lose my rag - he's one of those - he just "doesn't know". Never been in a band that's done anything but play pub rock (which is fine and has it's place). He tells you about his 9 guitars, what strings he uses the lot. I just yawn! His band wear matching shirts with the band name printed on them, he uses a wireless system - in pubs, with a full Marshall stack, and I've seen him playing guitar behind his head - not for fun but to try and get people to go "wow". What a tool. Anyway, had to get it off my chest as I've been getting really wound up with how rude he was, how deaf he must be, how ignorant he is and how I wish someone steals all his gear.
Why waste your time getting worked up about somebody like that? Life's too short-enjoy what you do. Sorry to say that-as I've grown older I've realised that what other people think is not a good ruler for measuring your own lfe.You are here once only, so is he, it's not a rehearsal-just do what you want. Just treat others with respect and kindness so you can sleep easy.
10. I always like the mix on "Blue And Lonesome/Sinners Prayer" by Billy Boy Arnold from 1977 with Tony McPhee, Alan Fish on bass, and Wilgar Campbell (ex Rory) on drums. It's a take no prisoners sound and I wish my bass would sound like that live!
11. Well, one of the covers we do is "Treat Her Right" which for me is just another song, but on Saturday we played at the Rebels in Sorell (think Hell's Angels!) with a dep guitarist and it rocked! Don't know why but it just felt really good when we all locked in on it.
12. Try using a different amp/cab/bass one at a time to isolate the problem.
13.
These are the only prices at which things get sold.
It's business not a personal attack. If it's worth more to you than you get offered then just say no. Getting offended by bartering-Jesus Christ! Grow a pair!!
14. I have a '91 US G&L SB2 with EMG passive pickups and it sounds great-really tight bottom end and plenty of growl- I used to play a Jazz but now use the G&L as my main bass.
15. I like the drive home, but here I have to be more alert to avoid 'roos and wombats who wander across the road and would seriously f### up the car if I hit one...
16.
Isn't there a minimum value below which they don't charge excise... or is that just an urban myth? I've kept my overseas orders below twenty quid and never had a problem. Maybe I have just been lucky. Soon find out as I'm just about to do it again.
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/customs/post/buying.htm if your order is worth more than #135GBP you "may" be required to pay duty.
17.
Blimey... I've got a pretty wide music taste but i'll narrow it down to Led zeppelin, rush, Rage against the machine, Nirvana, Yes , The who , Queen , Muse , Pixies , The Stone roses. What makes of amp is another question? I was looking into Orange, Hartke and Ashdown.
I play the same sort of stuff as your music tastes-go for used Trace Elliott on Ebay. I don't like Ashdown amps, unreliable, cabs OK; Hartke, metal speaker cones=harsh non-meaty tone, Hartke amp heads OK , no experience of Orange. I'm currently using a TE AH200, TE 4x10, Ashdown 4x10, and TE 1x15 (in whatever combination)to suit the venue-I've never had any problem producing enough volume with the 200w head wherever we play. Posters other than OP please don't slag me off for posting my opinions thanks.
18.
"David Sutch called Ronnie and asked if he would reform The Savages with Pete Phillips for “The London Rock and Roll Show”, the first music show to be staged at the Wembley Empire Stadium. The show featured some of the truly great artists including Bill Haley and the Comets, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Bo Diddley. Screaming Lord Sutch and the Savages brought the house down, along with Jack the Ripper, Joe Brown, Billy Fury and the House Shakers. " Which fits with this band list Screaming Lord Sutch & The Savages #22 (August 1972) • Dave Sutch (Lead Vocals) • Ronnie Harwood (Rhythm Guitar/Vocals) • Sid Meadows (Bass) • Pete Phillipps (Drums) http://www.ronnieharwood.com/html/chapter_3.html http://thebookofbands2.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html
thanks Spinynorman for your helpful reply. for some reason i thought that the bass player looked like the guy from Humble Pie-was that Greg Ridley?
19. in the movie The London Rock'n'Roll Show 1972? Ditto Screamin' Lord Sutch?
20.
I went to see a friends band on Saturday night. The bass player had a USA Fender Jazz and my original Ashdown rig from 2003/2005. An ABM500EVO2 and 2 x Mini 4x8 cabs. What a wicked growly punchy tone, both inside and outside the pub. Why have I been wasting my money on GAS all these years? Doh!!!
The reason some of us spend a lot of money on trying to improve our tone is that for a lot of us on here we only hear our bass standing next to our rig. What the punters hear and what we actually sound like to the audience can only be heard out in the crowd. A lot of the time when I get my bass sound to be maybe a killer JE sound or JJB ie really growly when I go out in the crowd it just gets lost in the mix. A lot of venues Iplay in just lose the top and the bottom. Employ your own PA guy , pay him lots and enjoy your perfect sounds as you get more bankrupt every gig.
21.
And then there's Clarky's CIJ p, Sid; the '52 reissue tele guitar I sold cos I was skint and no one I know of has had an Aerodyne they didn't love.
Didn't love mine, woolly tone and gave me cramp when I played it due to the bound body/sharp edge at the top-and no it was nothing to do with pleasuring myself the night before!
