A couple of months ago the band my daughter plays with recorded a few songs together with a family friend who was trying out his recorder for the first time. I offered to clean up the recordings a bit and they put them onto SoundCloud. One of the tracks was a folky version of a Mark Owen song which sounds like this http://soundcloud.com/aatd/aimsley-the-doctors-four While I was mucking around in Reaper with the various songs I thought it would be fun to do my own interpretation of this song. So, after a bit of slicing, dicing and reassembly using Recycle and Reason, recording in Reaper and much plundering of the 'net for sound clips I ended up with this http://soundcloud.com/leontransaxle/fmw_anarchic_freight_mix I don't know whether you'd call it a remix or an alternative version.

Another vote for REAPER here. OK it might be a complex beast but it can grow with you. You can start of perfectly OK with the basics and have an '"I didn't know it could do that" moment every few days as you work your way through the excellent free manual/guide. Compared to Cubase the cut, paste and shuffle around clips is a fragment of urine. For £30 its the bargain of the century. I must confess to being old fashioned with a liking for real sliders so although I have a very good M-Audio USB interface I tend to use a Fostex MR8 to record and transfer the tracks over to Reaper sending mixed stuff back to the MR8 to add further intruments/vocals.

Ahem! (Looks a little embarrassed) Care to take a look? I'm a big fan of Christy Moore (who usually has Declan Sinnott in tow) who was one of Planxty. ...And the Pogues when I'm in an up-tempo fight in an Irish pub kind of mood. For up tempo instrumentals you could also give Fairport a go too. Not Irish but some of their jigs are heading in that direction but in a more rock type setting

The best of Gong, much to the amusement of the patients in the waiting room outside my office. -
The mike I bought from them arrived in something stupid like two days. As good as from the UK anyway. The pop shield that should have supplied as part of the kit was out of stock so they included the next model up as a substitute.
I read somewhere that people have the bridge ashtray this way round to negate the effects of the integral rubber mute, but I don't know if it's true.
I heard the same when I was researching which way was the right way as I had seen both.
Well, I finally got round to sorting out a soundcloud account. So far I have uploaded two albums I have played on. More will follow in time The first is the last album I played on for a band called Cow and recorded in 2012 at Paul Wellers Black Barn studios. I guess its a kind of acoustic, motown, soul, pop thing with a 60's and 70's american feel. For me the stand out tracks are Shivers, Gypsy Lover and Far Enough (fretless).
Hi Michael, I heard Black Harvest on the Weller selected Mojo cover CD recently. I thought it was an outstanding track on what was a pretty excellent album all round.

I have to confess the following is based on conversations I have participated in rather than first hand experience of what they play like but I think there would be a blurring around the edges of the low end Fender/ upper end Squiers. Classic vibe Squiers and modern player Fenders are both made in China (my Squier is 'crafted in China') and there are suggestions it is within the same factory. There are enough differences between models in the two ranges to not allow direct comparison, although there maybe enough common ground to compare the VM and MP Jags (anyone done that?) I think this is more the area the OP was talking about. I am sure a good MIA Fender would knock the spots off a Squier. I have a CV 50s P and a MIM P Special and quality-wise there doesn't seen to be much, if anything in it. And there s nothing shoddy about the P Special.

Fender Precision Chrome Covers Disappointment
Leon Transaxle replied to Hobbayne's topic in General Discussion
To veer back on to topic (nice though the digression is),,, I have put both covers on my CV 50s P bass and find they are helpful. The pup cover is exactly where I need it when playing with fingers and the bridge cover is ideal to rest my hand when using a pick. Having a smaller gap to pound with a pick forces me to play a bit tidier too (as belting my knuckles on the cover a few times serves as a good tutor) OK, You can't palm mute but I might give the piece of foam under the cover trick a go. Anyway isn't that why you have more than one bass. I can palm mute fine on my P or my Westone. -

The sound of something rattling about in my laptop cooling fan -
I'm so glad to see all these comments about "playing like butter". I just thought it was me having been out of serious playing too long being out of touch. Personally I would rather it played "like a bleeding VC10" (to quote the sleeve notes of Quadrophenia).

Vintage MIJ (formerly J@pCr@p) Spotting
Leon Transaxle replied to Bassassin's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
At last. This was the first bass I had (well not this particular one, but you know what I mean). http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Satellite-Bass-66-W-short-scale-3-4-size-70s-made-in-Japan-/251038339984?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item3a730d1390#ht_500wt_1287 Funny. I don't remember it being smaller than a strat (or at least a Hondo II strat which is as close as I got at the time) -
Hi, I have a slight variation on the humming theme here. I have a CV 50s P Bass and a MIM P Bass Deluxe active. I have been trying to use them for recording using a Fostex MR8 mkII. For the last couple of years I have been using the MIM through a Line 6 studio 110 and run the line out of the Lowdown into the XLR of the Fostex which gave a nice quiet transparent recording. I also recently started using a BDI21 to save getting the Lowdown out of the cupboard. This has resulted in lowish hum which I rectified by keeping in contact with a non-sounding string at all times (so likely to be earthing related) but also a low level high pitched whine on recordings which is removed by applying a low pass filter in Reaper kicking in at around 1k (so not mains hum). So still usable with the above proviso. Since buying the CV I wanted to use the trebly tapewound sound for recording a couple of songs. Unfortunately there is masses of hiss when it comes to recording. It is not very obvious when playing through the Lowdown (ie playing not recording). There is also an insignificant amount of hiss when playing through headphones into my Korg AX300B. However if I plug the output socket of the Korg into the Fostex (it is the same socket for phones and line out) there is masses of hiss. The same also happens if I plug the BDI21into the Fostex. I have noticed that touching a metal part of the jack or the Fostex does reduce the hiss a lot. The Fostex does operate with the usual plug in 12v external supply so there is not a connection to earth. What is the best way forward from this? Does this sound like an earthing issue with the CV? It seems to be earthing through me when I tough the jack so to my mind the CV is earthing to the earth pin of the jack correctly and it is beyond this point that the issue occurs. I have used multiple leads so I think I have ruled that out (unless I have about seven rubbish leads). Surely this can't be an earthing issue with the recorder (as there is no route to earth in the design). I haven't seen it mentioned on the 'net anywhere as a common fault. I also have no real issue regarding hum from any other instrument (OK my Yamaha SSH strat-a-like does hum slightly more but not in an unusable way). If I need to investigate the CV further where do I need to stick a test meter to check earthing? Obviously the bridge but where else in particular? I would point out at this point I have fitted covers to the CV but the hum seems to be of a similar level with them on or off. I suppose earthing them at the same time while I have them apart wouldn't go amiss (although the HiMass bridge is a tight squeeze under the cover so I think they are touching anyway. It is also worth mentioning a previous owner has lined the control cavity with copper tape. Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction as I would like to record using this bass but I want to avoiding annoying the neighbours by resorting to miking up the amp to do so. Cheers in advance.

Hi, Like it says. I have dropped the price of an item and I have failed miserably to work out how to edit the topic title to reflect the drop. Can anyone assist a fool?

Hi, Bought a set of Fender strap locks the other week but, to me, they are just too damned big. They were fitted, left on the bass for a fortnight while I was on holiday, then taken off again. Anyone want them for £7 including postage? Word of warning there are the size of a Fender amp control knob. Picture below is from the web but mine are identical (ie chrome) and back in the packet exactly as shown.

I like Fender deluxe gig bags. Mine cost me about £30
