1. OK it's not the prettiest Jazz in the world, but nothing a scratchplate wouldn't sort. The price seems fair to me, & the sellers' description is accurate. Here we have an established member trying to get shot of some stuff (for very good reasons) & getting stick for it. Is this really on? P.
 2.
Bugger, doesn't appear to work on Macs. Is there one around anywhere that does, do you know? (I hate having to fire up my ancient PC just to download GuitarPro files.)
There are three installers for various flavours of Mac here: http://tuxguitar.her...r/download.html A quick scoot about on Google suggests that you might have 'fun' getting it to work after installation though. Looks like some kind of Java compatibility issue, but there seem to be workarounds depending on which exotic feline you're running. I suspect that Tux is no longer being developed, which would be a shame as it's a very good prog despite a few serious (IMO) drawbacks. Looks like the next release of Musescore will support GP files... more here: http://musescore.org/en/node/21443 & here's a link to the 'nightly' releases for Mac: http://prereleases.m...macosx/nightly/ I've not tried Musescore, but downloading it now & giving it a shufti over the weekend.
Blimey, It's handbags at dawn here, I only asked for a bit of help with an old Whitesnake song.
See, that's what Jazz does to you
I cannot seem to download any of the links, Adobe is not letting it through, thanks all the same. I'm going around the guitarist house tomorrow and we can work it out using the special software on his computer slowing the runs down note for note but keeping it in pitch.
Feel free to drop me a PM with your e-mail add & I'll happily wing them over if that's any help. Pete.
 5.
I have a guitarpro file for it which sounds pretty accurate to me. I used it to learn it for a covers band I was in several years ago and no one thought it wasn't right so can't be far off. if you have software that can read the file drop me a PM and I'll email you the file.
Ditto, probably the same file (if it's a .gp3 that has 'Purple Rainbows' and 'Bb-Dur' in the Score Info), & it's certainly close enough for Licensed Premises
If the above doesn't download correctly then please feel free to PM me. Cheers Pete
I tried that & got a font substitution warning when I opened it - 'Cannot find or create the font 'Opus'...' - with the result that the pdf was very hard to decipher. Guitar Pro does this too, as it uses a proprietary font for the notation & won't permit pdf embedding… result, gibberish! (Also, yours is for the reworked widdly metal version in A.) OP, try this old-fashioned paper one: https://dl.dropboxus...453031/FFYL.pdf & the Guit Pro file if it's of any use: https://dl.dropboxus...your_loving.gp3 If you haven't got GuitarPro, hunt down a copy of TuxGuitar. It's free & can open most GP files up to version 5. P.
 6.
The 10 years After clip is blues/rock guys trying to play jazz! it isn't really jazz -- the structure is pure 1/iV/ V 12 bar blues, but it swings and MAN they are SMOKIN'!!!
Quoted for truth. I was torn between posting 'Woodchoppers Ball' or 'I May Be Wrong (But I Won't Be Wrong Always)' as they're both good workouts tbh. 7.
You can't play blues bass any better than Tommy Shannon. It doesn't take monstrous technique, just the right feel, tone and note choices.
I'll see your Tommy Shannon & raise you a Keith Ferguson : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPIQcFRWpNw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwUZkYLHj-g Actually I don't reckon you can put a fag paper between them — SRV's 'Texas Flood' and the Fabulous Thunderbirds 'What's The Word' are both masterclasses. Shannon tends to get the plaudits mainly through the SRV connection, but also due to his prior stint with Johnny Winter. Ferguson's only claims to fame were the Fab T-Birds & a sadly premature death. 8. Can't find it as a single track, but Pat Travers' take on Howlin' Wolf's "I Ain't Superstitious" is a killer. It's track 6 (22:13 in): There's an absolutely mental version of 'Mystery Train' in there as well (28:55). Another test of stamina, along with some great moustache & Wal action can be found here: P.
 9. Apologies to Guitar-restaurant for mumping his thread.
Is this likely to come up for sale?
Only if I can source an 'MSG' one like the one in the OP (& here's the crucial bit...) when I have the funds. If that happens, I'll be putting it up here first as I know there are a few people that have taken a bit of a shine to it. Pete.
 10.
This! I was actually free but talked myself out of it as I'm dangerously susceptible to GAS at the moment and didn't want my appetite whetted! Silly really.
GAS can be a two-way street though. For yonks I've been contemplating the DB/EUB path & on Saturday I finally talked myself into having a quick go on Clarky's DB. Couldn't get on with it at all, so I can now say that I'm no longer considering DB. It's not for me. See? Instant saving of anywhere between £800 & £3000! Pete.
 11. Another excellent bash - Was that the biggest bash in BC [s]bistory[/s] history? Big thanks to the Hamsters & Nik for putting it all together, and to Malcolm (Jazzneck) for chauffeuring me & assorted choice JapCrap around. Here's to the next one! Pete.
 12.
Pick playing is one of the most widely misunderstood and underestimated means of playing a bass. It requires a completely different skillset and a lot more concentration to play dynamically. I would probably say it's the least researched means of playing the instrument insofar as only a handful of people have pushed pick playing to its limits. Like this man
Bloody hell! That was a bit good in a very prog-tastic way. Thanks for that. Not sure that AJ was doing the pushing there to be honest. There were times when he looked as though he was being pushed - & that's not something I thought possible. Overall, Simon Phillips stole that for me... looked like he was having a whale of a time. There were a lot of Emerson-type segments in there from Hiromi. Reckon she's had Tarkus on repeat for a while, & the opening put me in mind of the 'Mirrors' segment in 21st Century Schitzoid Man. P.
 13.
Surely the SB900 is a two pickup model.
It is. That's an SB-600 - the set neck is the giveaway.
There seem to be a number of these around at the moment. I played one in a shop the other day. Nice, but not really better than what I have already.
I know what you mean… I tried one last year & found the neck to be slightly chunkier than that of a through-neck. Felt odd. P.
 14.
Please, don't upset Pete - I've had to charter a steam train and a Hansom cab from the station just to get him to come!
Very decent of you sir. The Coach & Four is 'up on blocks' at the moment as I believe the lower classes are wont to say. Actually, I was toying with the notion of experiencing one of these new-fangled horseless carriages that seem to be rather popular, so if anyone was planning on going that lives anywhere near Lewisham, Forest Hill, Catford or even the horror that is Croydon & would be willing to give me a lift I'd appreciate it. Happy to bung in towards petrol costs.
Staying unashamedly 20th Century, then ?
Watch it, or I'll send one of the the under butlers round to set fire to your bins Actually it's more of a question of finding readily available labels of a decent size. P
 15.
Are we being issued with BC handle/name badges?
I ran up this artwork for an earlier bash, but it ended up not being used as no-one was able to print them out in time: I've still got it on file & can tweak it as needed to suit any commercially available sticky label if anyone can run them out. Zip disk, Floppy disk & VHS Face labels are around the right size. Pete.
 16. Can't be certain, but both 'Made In Japan' and 'If You Want Blood' were on heavy rotation at the time, so it's likely to be 'Lazy' or 'Whole Lotta Rosie'
 17.
I'm out I'm afraid, something has come up.
That's a shame… It'll be down to me to fly the SB flag then. I've bookmarked the date this year & I'm hopeful, but I won't make a final decision until I'm sure about cashflow etc. nearer the date. Tentatively: SB-900 & Ibanez Promethean. Pete.
 18.
My Aria never goes out of tune. Everything else moves a little when they get taken somewhere or the temperature changes a lot.
Wouldn't quite go so far as saying 'never', but both my SBs are very stable beasts. Even this unseasonal outbreak of Summer has only sent them a cent or three flat.
I get to learn a lot of covers so I'm possibly more sensitive. It all goes horribly wrong if I'm not in tune with the record I'm learning.
Not all recordings are in tune though. A lot of early Decca stuff (Stones, Small Faces etc.) seems to be a quarter tone o.n.o off; It was common practice back in the day to adjust the speed of a recording to either give it a bit more oomph or to bring it inside the 2 mins 30 limit for radioplay. Also, there's no guarantee that Turntables, tape decks and I daresay CD players run at the same speed as the mastering equipment, & I harbour a suspicion that some MP3 rippers affect pitch slightly too. Add into the mix that plenty of artists (e.g. Early Sabbath, Bon Scott era AC/DC, Stevie Ray Vaughan etc.etc.) downtune a semitone, & occasional retuning on the fly is a given if you're learning a mixed bag of covers. Unless your bass is drifting wildly off pitch in a short space of time, I'd not be overly concerned. P.
 19.
It's only a matter of time before the IRA start using coconut bombs
Can't see that working. The bomb squad would only have to follow the mile or so of flex & the game would be up. I've long thought that there's room for a Surrealist Wing in the IRA. Take that lot years ago that were lobbing home-made mortars at Terminal 4. If they'd used grapefruit or melons & then waited to get caught there'd have been a golden opportunity to annoy the authorities. Same goes for the Transit with the flip-top roof outside the MOD on Whitehall aiming at No. 10, much better to have sat in Horseguards (where there was direct line of sight) & blat out custard pies. 21. Interesting & enlightening read, thanks for that. Whilst there's no legal requirement to have anything PAT tested, I'd make two observations: 1: — It's not a bad idea for anything that gets a fair degree of use 'out & about' (or was bought second hand & is an unknown quantity), and having a sticker makes it easier to keep track of when it was last looked at. 2: — Regardless of what the law actually says, there is a generally-held perception that annual PAT testing is compulsory. Sometimes it's easier to go with the flow than overturn a widespread belief, irrespective of how erroneous that belief may be. +1 to what icastle said too. P.
 22.
I saw that as well, cant work out whats going on with the pickup though
Essentially they're two single-coil p/ups clipped & taped together with one half-set of poles in each coil. The guts of an MB-IV (as fitted to my ZZB-Custom) look like this: It's possible that someone has whipped one set of four poles out & moved them to the other bobbin and gash-drilled the cover to allow them to show (but done it really badly). Alternatively they've hoyed something inappropriate in there & 'modified' the cover to suit. A photo of it sans cover would reveal all. Either way the cover is pretty much buggered, & they're virtually irreplaceable. I did a similar thing with to the bridge-position MB-III on my TSB-400, except I filled up all the slots with some silver steel bar cut & filed to length: If anyone here fancies a punt at it, I have a spare, complete MB-IV that needs a rewind as it reads open circuit on both coils. 24. Very nice indeed. Been comparing it with the album version & I'm torn between the two. JJ's vocals on the studio cut are much more restrained & fit the song better, but there's a rather syrupy string section over it that does it no favours. The understated Hammond in the TV version works much better. Any idea who the band was? Big Jim Sullivan was TJ's guitarist for many years, so that's a likely candidate for one slot, but the rest…?
 25. He's also got a rare-as-hen's-teeth SBR-150 up for grabs: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Aria-SBR-150-/141037568961?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item20d67e83c1 Something about those photos seems familiar…
