1.
So I've been looking around for basses, as a bassist in a NWOBHM/Power Metal band with the influences of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Ozzy, Angel Witch, Saxon, Clovenhoof, Thin Lizzy, Queensryche, and with some Thrashier influences thrown in such as Megadeth, Testament, Exodus and Overkill, but my own personal influences range from Geezer Butler, John Entwhistle and Steve Harris. All the way to Bootsy Collins, Victor Wooten Jaco Pestorius (Spelling) and some other stuff.
From your list, I'd have immediately said 'Precision'. After all a P was good enough for Harris, Daisley, Geezer & a raft of others - it is the Hawker Hurricane of Rock after all At the risk of prying, however...
For medical reasons right now I can't really play a standard shaped bass and that's why with my guitars I've started playing V's instead of the standard shapes I previously had
...what are the medical reasons? Basses can be a fine source of all manner of long-term injuries if you don't get things right - back strain (they can be heavy), Carpal Tunnel issues (usually down to bad posture, but the instrument's ergonomics play a part too) & shoulder problems (too narrow a strap + a heavy bass). As far as ergonomics go, the BC Widow looks like it **could** be a complete nightmare, but I've never played one so I'm voting with my eyes & could be completely wrong. I'm sure that someone on here has one though so maybe they can chip in with some facts. Here's a possible: http://basschat.co.u...pro-zzb-deluxe/ That's a 1984 example; I have an '83 ZZB Custom & can vouch that they're surprisingly comfortable & not at all heavy. Neck is very slim & fast - Fender Jazz profile but 32" (medium) scale; the pickups are hot - wide open it'll venture into Rickenbacker Territory, but the tone can be easily moderated to get a Bluesy 'honk'. No cutaway, so it sits a tad further outboard than most. The biggest problem I've had is finding a gigbag that'll fit. It's longer than a Gibson T-Bird! Gratuitous pics: The more common Blue/Black 'burst finish crops up on Ebay & Gumtree fairly regularly at prices well within your budget. This thread might provide some more food for thought: http://basschat.co.u...c/133346-pointy Pete.
 2.
The only problem I can see is if the Penzance address is correct it will come under Devon and Cornwall Police The Craiglist London ad.will be in The Metropolitan Police area
Always assuming that the alleged seller actually lives in either of those places. A couple of years back there was a WAL scam in a rather similar vein: http://basschat.co.u..._1#entry1214589 http://basschat.co.u..._1#entry1876742 http://basschat.co.u..._1#entry1945792 Based anywhere from Lerwick to Bournemouth via London... wonder if it's the same scammer?
Push your bank with it, give them all the detail you've got, they just may be able to help with tracing the money and, hopefully the git who scammed you, through the UK police services. Best of luck.......
^^ This ^^ Follow the money. P.
 3. When playing with a new drummer for the first few times, position yourself so that you can see their right foot/bass drum pedal. The visual cue cuts down the time it takes to lock in. Less is usually more, except when it isn't.
 4. Battered Laser Classic £80 collection only from That Norf Lunn'n.
 5. See if they'll mix to Pantone 5005 C, according to Photoshop that's the closest match. The next one down (4995 C) looks pretty good to my eye too. Agree on the printed swatch idea too, but the bigger the better. P.
 6.
The fuses I brought are labled F5A.... Maybe that's it then! I brought these other fuses from another music retailer and actually gave him the original fuse so I would get the same ones - but obviously not... Maybe I will buy some T2A fuses then and see if that solves the problem, I will take it in anyway and plug it in at the music shop and see what happens. Would somewhere like Maplins do them?
Yes, but you'll have to buy a pack of 10:— http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/2a-time-delay-glass-20mm-fuse-10-pack-gl62s If you have a TV repair shop anywhere near you, that could be a good call. Also... check that yours is 20mm long & not the older 1.25" version. The 'T' stands for 'Time Delay', but they're often called Slow-Blow fuses. They're designed to withstand the current surge that occurs when you switch the amp on & the power supply capacitors charge up, but with repeated use they eventually fail (exactly like a proper light bulb). If the amp blows several Ts on start-up, it means there's a problem.
 7.
I managed to get the original Aria p/up out of it's casing,
How did you manage that? Enquiring minds need to know. Don't bin the original bobbin just yet though... I'm attempting to rehabilitate the original pickup from my SB-1000. It's soaking in a jar of Dichloromethane at the moment & that seems to be softening the epoxy resin to the extent that it can be dug out with either a screwdriver tip or one of those wooden coffee stirrers. Initial results suggest that it'll be recoverable, but I'll report back either way. Pete.
 8. I have a couple of MB-IIIs that need similar treatment. Torn between Hot Rod (who've taken over from Wizard), or possibly Oil CIty. P.

 10.
Doesn't get much better does it. Terrific stuff. Really miss Blackmore wielding a strat.
+1. Purple without Lord & Blackmore directing proceedings isn't Purple IMO. Don Airey was the obvious (& only?) choice to replace JL, & Morse is without doubt a cracking player, with none of RB's 'guitardist' failings... but the chemistry isn't there.
 11.
Oh dear.
Indeed. This might make up for it though: https://www.youtube....h?v=3AL73LYo64A .
 12. Not to worry. What was the pickup difference between the 380 & 450? I assume that one has a big ceramic bar magnet under the bobbin & the other had magnetised poles: MB-II as fitted to TSB-400: MB-III as fitted to ZZB Custom: P.
 13.
Right, just checked mine and it is exactly the same as the RSB schematic above and same cap value. If this works, there should be a photo or link below of the control cavity, pickup wire coming in from left (black cable) onto volume control and the wiring for the jack socket goes off to the far right.
Could you post (or PM me) a shot of your CSB-450's controls? I'm gently compiling a set of schematics for Arias as & when 'factory stock' pics (like yours) turf up. So far I have schematics for RSB-1, RSB Deluxe-5, RSB-800 (Rev-Sound), SB-900 (Series 1), SB-1000 (S1), & my passive SB-1000 mod. I suspect that the RSB-1 schematic will apply to most of the single pickup models, so it'd be useful to have a list of basses it applies to on it as well. Pete.
 14. I like that... sort of Brand X meets National Health. One of these days I'll catch you lot. Promise.
 15. You only have a Vol & Tone to worry about, so it shouldn't be too problematic. I don't have a CSB, but my RSB-I is wired V/T: Full-size version Component values: Vol Pot: 250kΩ A (Audio Taper) Tone Pot: 250kΩ A Tone Cap: 473k (0.047µF) Pete.
 16.
This chordfiy stuff, is it accurate ?
Since, in this instance, it's showing chords when there are none being played, I have my doubts as to its accuracy. P.
 17. Stumbled upon this today whilst looking up versions of Cannonball Adderley's 'Work Song'. Corking bit of tunage IMO, but I can't really pick out the changes - does anyone have a transcript or chord sheet? Pete.
 18.
Seriously. I've always wondered.
I reckon that there's three types: 1: The 'true' jam session. Someone kicks off & everyone else joins in with something that fits. Changes usually based on random shouts/nods/hand signals etc. Best kept in the rehearsal room, but if recorded it's a useful tool for songwriting. Black Night, Gimme Some Lovin' and Paranoid all came out of jam sessions in the studio. 2: The Open Mic Night. This can be any genre & usually consists of angst-ridden singer/songwriters, full originals bands & sometimes just a bunch of mates getting up to blow through a few covers. 3: The Blues Jam. Get up with the house band & busk your way through a bunch of 'usual suspects' Blues tunes. At first glance this sounds like it'll bore the pants of any & all in attendance. If the organisers get it wrong, it will, but when it clicks it's anything but dull. 3a: The Jazz Jam. See 3 but substitute 'Jazz' for 'Blues'. Lead sheets/Real Book may be permissible. For my money 2 & 3 are useful as they keep you on your toes. You don't have time to tune up (should have done that while you were waiting), mess around with FX boards the size of Euston, or prong about with someone else's amp in search of your 'core tone'. Get up, plug in, check level & off you go with only a sketchy guide as to what you'll be playing. A typical instruction at a Blues Jam will be "Cm, swing shuffle, quick change, II-V-I turnaround, watch for the stops, in from the V. 1-2-3-4". 'Not faffing about' is a good skill for any player to have, & jams instil that pretty quickly. Pete.
 19.
Oh God, no. You mean a 'blues'-style jam? Haven't done that for years. Yes, that is boring in the extreme and I'll have no part of it!
Depends on whether you like Blues & how organised it is. The two I go to are managed quite strictly - 3 songs each line up, solos twice around the block, no funny tunings unless you play slide. If you take the p£ss you'll get chucked off after two numbers & not asked back. Last Sunday I got lumbered with 'Key To The Highway' which is usually an exercise in staying awake over a I-V-IV played at a funereal pace, but the gob-iron merchant decided to make it a lot faster. That gave me room to stretch out a bit to the extent that I had Dennis Greaves (Nine Below Zero) jumping up & down shouting 'YEAH!' at me. Best 'jam' I've had in ages & it only goes to show. Sometimes I've been lumbered with average players who think they're really special, & that's frustrating. Other times I've phoned it in as there was nowhere to go. Then there are those that understand that it's unrehearsed & that anyone can put their stuff on the table provided it fits. The latter is the reason I do them. Pete.
 20.
^ Wow! I'll take a pic of the 10H but it's rather dinky compared to the above.
But I'll bet your 10H doesn't have to generate the amount of paperwork that the 'big stuff' does If you have room for another hobby, you're in a pretty good location. The Churnet Valley & Foxfield lines are pretty close to you. P.
 21. Aria SB? That's my SB-900, which only came in Natural, Black, Walnut or Trans Red, but the very similar Elite II was available in pearl white. I'm pretty local to you if you want to give it a try. Pete.
 22.
Just out of curiosity are there any steam engine enthusiasts on here, or just me? I've not been lucky enough to play at GDSF yet but regularly attend as an exhibitor
I dabble... 23. A few bits of Japcrap: L > R: 1981 TSB-400, 1983 RSB-1, 1984 RSB Deluxe-5, 1984 ZZB Custom, 1979 SB-900, 1979 SB-1000 Frankenfretless. P.
 24.
Hey guys! I'm new to Bass guitar and I decided to buy a Westone Thunder I Bass guitar for £125 from guitarguitar. It's a japanese guitar made in the 1980s. It's in near mint condition and just looks fantastic. But I'm not very experienced in the world of bass so pleas advise me on if I should get it or not! Many thanks, Alfie
The Thunder 1 was originally marketed as a 'starter bass' back in the pre-internet days. I can recall seeing them in my mum's Grattan and/or Littlewoods catalogues; Bass, useless practice amp, dodgy lead & a cheapo strap as one package. Wouldn't be surprised if the bundle came with a set of pitch pipes for tuning either. £125 is a good price for one & it won't devalue if you decide to shift it in the future. Matsumoku products from that era are built like brick privys too, so will not only stand up to a lot of rough & tumble, but can take a quite close-tolerance setup that makes them really easy to play. Sporting chance that it **might** have a DiMarzio pickup fitted, which many see as a good thing. So... No, it's not 'too good' for you. Buy it & play it 'til yer fingers bleed Pete.
 25.
Red House will be mine, all mine!
Ah... another one (like JBG) that tends to get overlooked. The bassline on the Hendrix version is something I've never heard played in the wild. I keep promising myself I'll tackle it, but...
