Check out the Tech21 VT Bass and/or Catalinbread SFT pedals (one for sale in the classifieds). Both sound great for rock bass tones, the VT is better for the more grindy sounds played with a pick and roundwounds, the SFT has the edge when it comes to old school tones.

Not tried the Drive Plus, but I could not for the life of me get a decent sound out of the Lomenzo. Sounded a bit weak to me, neither a warm tubey overdrive or a high gain distortion, just somewhere inbetween in the land of 'meh'. Also the lows were lacking since the distortion signal is just a narrow midrange band added on top of the dry signal resulting in a big mid hump. Still, lots of people seem to like it and it's dirt cheap so give it a try!

Not strictly a neck pickup, more on the middle, but the Epiphone Jack Casady is a great bass, and the varitone switch can be used to get a real thumpy sound approximating a pickup closer to the neck. They're about £470 new on Thomann.

I say do it anyway. You would have a unique set of notes to play with and could make some really interesting music in the key of B [size=3]⅓[/size].

I think you can convert it to Mk2 specs by snipping one resistor out, Google will be able to tell you more than I can!

I'm not sure without opening it up (which I can't do right now) but one thing to bear in mind is that there are 2 versions. Users complained that the mod settings were too subtle even with the trimpots maxed so they changed a resistor or something to increase the depth of the chorus effect. Therefore a lot of Mk1 owners would prefer higher settings than default whilst Mk2 owners may be happy with the default settings.

I've found the best wah sound from using my [sfx] X&M crossover/mixer with a gnarly old guitar wah in the high channel, keeping the lows clean. Even most bass wahs lose low end when pushed towards the toe end, but not with a setup like this. Certainly not the cheapest method though!

It has a J nut width (unfortunately for me, I prefer the slightly wider nut of the P). They all have the same 'C' shape neck profile though, which I think is fairly slim.

The VMJ usually gets a lot of love so I was surprised everyone's saying go for the defret, but I have to agree. The VMJ has a marmite fingerboard, I personaly hated the sound and feel of the ebonol board. 2 more options: - Put that £100 towards a fretless neck, then you can return the bass to stock and not lose as much if you ever come to sell - Rockbottom in Croydon had a mint MIJ fretless Jazz in sunburst/tort for sale for £350, if they still have it you could sell the CVJ and trade up. If it is still there I bet they'd take £325 too.

£549 is a ripoff. I got my '79 in fairly good nick for £230 from here a year or so ago. They do generall go for higher but no much more than £280 on eBay. There was once a white one on my watch list with a 99p start price and no reserve, nobody bid on it and I forgot to!
