  1. It had a Quarter Pounder on it when I got it (from first owner, Lukeward) but I didn't like the sound. I had a DiMarzio left over from another project so tried it and loved it...Ben put another QP in. We've all got our own ears....
  2. [attachment=46907:DSCN1159.JPG] Here's a pic from its earlier life, with DiMarzio and tort.....nice bass!
  3. Yes - I'll email later....
  4. Sorry, Thumb gone..but it was a bit heavy anyway. Got a nice light PJ Sadowsky though...
  5. Had two..still got one. I'll pm when I've had some sleep...
  6. Still plotting.......

I used to own this one [attachment=46740:DSCN0744.JPG] Fantastic bass, with the thinnest neck I've ever seen. Hugh Manson's designs are a bit of an acquired taste but very high quality construction. His late 70's to mid 80's stuff has a lovely "brit bass" vibe. Totally worthless compared to a Wal from the same era (probably much less than Jaydee or Status) but lovely basses all the same.
  8. I've always liked EMG's in a Pbass too - punchy and warm, but with added bite if you want it..but most people will pay a lot more for the originals.
  9. I'm sure someone here will have a useful comparison, but the market is not good, its not from one of Fender's "finest moments" and its got EMG's and its a heavy one...I'd retire it for a while, rather than sell, if possible. I'm assuming you're using a w-i-d-e leather strap (or comfort strap) etc to help with the weight?

Nice very British basses...but people try to make ££ on the JPJ assosciation. Buy them for what they are, not who plays them
  11. I'd love to see a double midget photo...that sounds well dodgy, but you know what I mean
  12. I think its best to only use "lemon oil" on the fretboard - lemon oil (or tung/danish) on the back, followed by the gunstock wax (small amount) as a sealer. I cleaned one up recently, it works well but is hard work if the fingerboard has got very dirty. I like oiled necks, but I would think about a thin satin nitro coat on the fingerboard - they get dirty very easily.
  13. Your workshop looks very tidy..... Can't wait to see some spray-gun action!
  14. Sold the Doc some Emg's for a build...very easy to deal with, just wished I lived a bit closer so he could fix up my basses.....
  15. Thanks for sharing - a good reminder to us all how things can happen. A friend of mine had major heart surgery a few years ago and mentioned his will and leaving me his bass if things didn't go well. That's a feeling you don't ever forget....I really hope I'm never having a conversation like that again. On a lighter note - your Bravewoods look fantastic. What is the secret of getting JE to actually build you somethng??!! PM me, please...
  16. For all the reasons given, I never really consider replying to adds - current conventions and interweb standards of conduct are really stacked against you. All of my work is through personal contact/recommendation, sometimes from fairly unlikely sources. Nothing gets you gigs like being seen - either playing or attending the sort of gigs you want to do.
  17. And I'm about to send you some more money........hmmmm
  18. [attachment=45742:P1000156.JPG]Anyone interested? Very good condition, I guess around ten years old, but not used in the last 3/4. The silver EMG letters are all there, no real scuffs on the tops. £80 posted, and I'll put some photos up if there are any takers.... [attachment=45742:P1000156.JPG][attachment=45743:P1000154.JPG]
  19. looks like a Hugh Manson E bass?
  20. Its also worth noting that steel cored strings for double bass were a new(ish) thing - most players were still using thick/soft/ fragile gut strings up to the late 50's / early 60's?. There is a huge difference between a gut E string and a steel one, and much less of a transition to a bass-guitar style flatwound as we know it from the 60's. I guess the Pyramid Gold or LaBella is the nearest to a custom shop re-issue....
  21. I read somewhere they bought the VC Squier company originally because they needed strings for things like bass guitars they couldn't get....and the employees that didn't go to fender ended up as the GHS string company. But that could be utter b+=~@~, of course. I also read somewhere they used to wrap a bit of metal tape round a gut double bass string (just over the pickup) when they were designing the early Pbass, as they couldn't get a string to fit.
  22. Compulsive Pedulla stripper....that's got to be a medical condition.
  23. One point I should have been clearer on - the active boxes that have "spiked out" on me have been cheaper (but generally excellent) DI's running from line outputs (sometimes active basses as well) and on phantom power. I suspect its the cheaper designs running on phantom that causes the problem. I use active DIs for upright bass with absolutely no issues....but for amped up rocknroll I opt for a transformer...or a Sansamp!
