[/quote] Are you being serious? I for one find the thread fascinating. IMNSHO, wood can be good, but it can be stupid as well. Concrete can never be stupid, as it provides a virtually non-vibrating environment and thus by definition is interesting, if only for purposes of comparison or research. The whole argument/debate is not stupid, but very interesting IMNSHO. The stupid enters it when people believe on authority or prejudice instead of hard evidence. I haven't yet read the whole thread, but up to now I find I've read many interesting views inbetween the prejudiced ones, so I'd like this thread to go on please.

Hi Joseph, Welcome to BC. Just keep reading, and the info will flow your way. At the top of the page there's always a search function as well where you can change where it must search for you. Handy. Then there's a friendly and willing crowd here, but they should be your last option. They induce Gear Acquisition Syndrome, and will cost you a lot of money. Careful with this crowd!

[/quote] Hi Mike, First, you'd get more and better response on another forum, like "General Discussion" or preferably the "Miscellaneous Equipment and Accessories" forum which is specifically for strings, a.o. Also, one is asked to do a forum search before asking basic questions, as the pros will get fed up with answering the same stuff again and again. I know everybody sins against this though. That said, in my noob experience, flatwounds have a rounded, warmer tone. AFAIK they're less flexible in tone as well. They live forever. String change twice a year? Forget it. Some people have them on for decades. I have played them a long time ago, and can find one drawback: use them for too long, and roundwounds will feel harsh on the fingers afterwards.

You put this "predicting tones" in the context of improv. Many things can be said about this - for example: - Many jazz soloists practise for years on all types of standard licks in all kinds of keys and styles, if only to have something to fall back on when getting trouble during an improv. As a listener one can often hear the sudden change from song related beauty into some weak tones and then suddenly some standard licks. - In a lot of improv, the player would not as much decide on the next tone, or even have time to "predict" it, but would just play those series of tones or arrays of finger positions that years of practice have taught him/her will do well. The player would probably (but not always) know what's coming though. Hm. I wonder if that is clear enough. Tell me if it doesn't come across. You made one cool thread, bro!
