1. I had a gig with my old motown band at a club on an RAF base in Hillingdon. I took my gf and she helped me pack the car. I took the amps out and she took the bass (my 78 stingray). I opened up the boot and loaded the amps and left her to put the stingray in while I went back to lock the place up. Then in we got in and drove off to the gig. When I got to the gig, I opened up the back of the car and couldn't see the bass anywhere. Apparently she hadn't loaded it in the car and couldn't remember where she left it. So I got back into the car and went back home but couldn't see the bass anywhere - either inside the flat or out. Then I hear a knock on the door and its one of my neighbours standing there holding my bass. He said he'd stopped "a pair of gyppos" from walking off with it after they found it on the pavement propped up against some railings. Needless to say my relief was immense but I was half an hour late for the gig by the time I got back and we only had time for one set. My nerves were shattered at the prospect of losing the stingray and being so late, and I couldn't focus on playing. The club ended up being near empty anyway and our playing pretty much sucked any how. That was the worst gig I've played so far.
  2. Welcome mooey - I use GK stuff myself, you must get a hell of a percussive slap sound with that set up!
  3. Jamie have you thought about putting some samples up? I have no doubt this is a nice sounding bass and a great price.
  4.
Bravo was showing it not too long ago.
Wikkid! I think it might have been around series 6 when Abe got started - any chance you could have a listen and record any for us?
  5.
It's not Dood I'm worried about. I want to know about this 'correction' stuff that MB1 mentioned. Will I have to wear the giant raffia chicken wings and Zebra-stripe shorts like last time? If so, I'd sooner risk the doodaddery.
Here we tend to use a fake fur all-in-one suit with little cub ears on the hood and a f*rt flap out the back where we can position the spankatron. Then all we need is a catheter, a floor mop and bucket, lots of polythene sheeting, some leather cuffs and a small rodent, preferably a baby mole rat as they like dark places. Dood loves it.
  6.
So nice to see a solo that isn't slapping at 100 mph
In which case you probably wouldn't be interested in the incidental music. I did end up recording some of it years and years ago on cassette tape but I have no idea where those tapes are (probably thrown out) or even if they were playable after all this time. (Erm, not that I have a cassette player now anyway...) Say does anyone have cable access to a channel which plays repeats of old programmes like CHiPs?
  7.
Greeting from across the pond in the deep desert Arizona state! First time post here. Was part of the old Bassworld and enjoyed that site also. Looking forward to meeting some great UK members. The focal point of my collection are my Wal basses.
Blimey, so THATS where they've been disappearing to! Welcome back mg
  8.
Oh wait... I moderate that forum and should have spotted it... .
9. oh yes, add me to the rick list. They're a bass I think is made for playing with a pick rather than fingers.
  10. Yeah there's something so musically complete about just bass and vocals. Jaco and Joni did something like that on Mingus and Heijra
  11. Most 80-90's Gibson basses leave me wondering why they bothered to cut the trees down in the first place. I'm not a huge fan of Gibson basses over all but that period seems a particularly pointless waste to me. Also my old Westone Spectrum 2 bass. Apart from that I can see merit in most things I've tried.
  12. Just enough chordal technique to make the song work. I didn't like the tone he was getting though. I wish he'd used something a little brighter for solo playing. Have to confess I've been a closet Abe Laboriel fan for a while. The CHiP's TV series was formulaic and boring but he did some incredible playing on the incidental music in the 70's after pwning the original composer. The producers apparently left him to his own devices in the studio! You can hear him on the original theme tune here, its not as flashy as the incidental stuff but he's funky as hell:
  13. Baldy, its easy for us to simply change your nick name. You don't have to create a new profile.
  14.
Basically i wanted to give a shout out to Kev and say that if anyone needs parts for their musicman he is the guy to speak to!!
Yeah I've had a number of dealings with him and he's solid gold - unfailingly polite, helpful, prompt and informative. I've recommended him by name to others on the pre BC forums.
  15.
On t.v this week, i have bassically been noticing 8x10s AMPEGS AND ASHDOWNS
They're mostly hire rigs. For a loud amp I'd suggest GK if you would like a warm, clean and aggressive sound. Otherwise a Mesa Boogie Bass 400+ is well worth considering if you can handle lugging it to a gig. Markbass are pretty loud too.

    New Basschat Skin

Thanks for your kind comments guys, we're glad everyone likes it! Yes the bass is my Celinder - it had to be a black bass photographed in a very specific manner so the shadow was in the right place, so to save time I did the photography myself. The original source image is here:
Although I would like to complain about the fingerprint/marks on the left of the pictured Jazz
I wiped the bass down before photographing it. It looks like something that might have been reflected in the finish.
  18. Something about raising environmental awareness of pop stars. Then they get to show everyone else how aware they are by putting a concert on.
  19. We have now switched over to the new Basschat skin. It has been tested on IE 6/7, Firefox, Safari and Camino. Please reply here or PM phatmonkey if you have any feedback/problems or find any bugs, especially if you are using a browser we haven't tested. Thanks!
Oxblood, i can give you a lift form Ruislip Central line, if you want, but my car is totally impractical for anything more than a bass or 2!!! Trev.
Alternatively Ken if you can make it to Stamford Brook on the District line, I can pick you up. Space shouldn't be a problem as my car is an estate. Since you have to come over on the underground I know its not really going to offer more convenience than taking the train but the offer is there if you are interested.
  21.
As far as I can make out, he was holding his thumb and finger together as if he had a pick and strumming near the end of the neck
and bleeding a bit, if the rumours are true.
  22.
Ok.. I think I am officially lusting for a headless Shuker now! Nice pics Jon!!
Me too, I've been talking to Jon about it this week. What a stunning piece of maple on top. Jon was right about it looking like you could swim in it.
  23.
Hi CK - How much for the bridge unit? (assuming it's for sale of course).
PM'd
  24. and its been duly set up. We'll see how it goes over the next couple of months.
  25. 'k, in which case you almost certainly won't have the shorting problem I described. The other thing is that the contacts might be bent from wear and tear.
